At one time, I would take my digital cameras to a technician to clean my sensors. When the cost became prohibitive, I started cleaning my own.

Here are two Youtube videos that I found helpful :

MOC: Sensor GTR. The side profile is sleeker and more well-proportioned than that of my previous supercar attempts. It must be a handful to control with a V12 engine and that short wheelbase, though...

As part of an IAEA training course on nuclear security, an outdoor tour is conducted at Japan’s Physical Protection Exercise Field, part of its Integrated Support Center for Nuclear Nonproliferation and Nuclear Security (ISCN), in Tokai-Mura. ISCN training courses combine classroom learning on key concepts with exercises and demonstrations. Participants gained hands-on experience with real equipment and measures that States employ to strengthen physical protection of nuclear material and facilities. (June 2017)

Japan is a member of the International Network for Nuclear Security Training and Support Centres (NSSC Network), which was established by IAEA Member States in 2012 to facilitate sharing of information and resources and to promote coordination and collaboration among states with an NSSC or those having an interest in developing a centre. The 2018 NSSC Network Annual Meeting will be hosted at ISCN, 5 – 9 March 2018.

First results of the new line sensor TSL1401CL 128 pixels at 400 dpi resolution. This signal show the piek level of the green laser on a white surface reflection. The signal is here is saturated due to the white surface. The intergration time is 47.5 us and the scan time is 70 usec. Even on a black surface the signal is about 1V. The readout of the analog signals are done by 2 ADC convertors type ADS7885 here at 32 MHz clock. The line sensor is more sensive compared to the previous version TSL202R at 200 dpi.

Got sensor cleaning brushes from visible dust (reviewed here). got rid of most of the crap (compare top and bottom) although in some cases it just added different crap or moved existing crap around. cleaned it about 10 times instead of the recommended 2x. unfortunately one of the brushes ships in a plastic envelope which has adhesive placed such that it's hard to remove the brush without contacting it with the adhesive. I think that's what added the smear in the upper left part of the frame. Fortunately the company offers a liquid cleaning product to get rid of smears created by the brush-poorly designed envelope product.

Timing signals for the new detector system for the next 3D unit (2013) with 2 external fast 6 ms shutters. I would like to calculate the optimal position as well as the direction of flight. Detector calculation need to be super fast, into less then 50us. The readout of the 128 analog pixels from the sensor + high-speed ADC 8 bits convertion may take a max of 40 us, +60 us for position-direction calculation (10.000 calculations per second). This is a start of my dream, the special components have been delivered. Given the new components, the majority are implanted in SMD. This is an additional difficulty, only single-layer PCB is available at this moment. The line-sensor is true hole 14 pins version, all others are SMD.

Now I will start the verilog code programming for the FPGA board. PLL clock at 50 MHz is running, now I have to add all the other signals. Line sensor readout and the serial ADC convertion need to be perfect synchroon as show in the diagram. Change the value of the PLL clock to a lower value may vari the readout and acquisition duration of the sensor/adc convertor. Easy to adjust this integration times.

Update 2012 Aug 06

Timing adjusted and corrected for read out to the FPGA module. The read out time is only half of the past because of the use of two ADC 7888 highspeed converters.

All soldered together, working, and sealed up in a nice box. Now just to write software to do something interesting with it.

Each yellow dot is a spot. Pretty sure these are oil. The pattern is concentrated in the upper left hand corner.

Fuel Pressure Sensor?

A friend was cleaning our camera sensors.

Pacific Northwest National Laboratory scientists have developed an electronic sensor fish that is designed to record some of the environmental conditions fish may encounter while passing through hydropower turbines. The original six-inch rubbery fish (pictured) has since been revised into the form of a 3.6-inch plastic tube.

This is the same image as seen in www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/476181751/ but I have applied the unsharp mask. It did not seem to work out when I applied it to both sides at the same time, so I applied it to each side in different proportions. Click on farm3.static.flickr.com/2345/1928154854_dd5dfccf21_o.jpg to evaluate the effect. After you click on the link, you will have to mouse over the image to get a magnifying glass icon. Click while holding the magnifying glass over the image and you will be able to view it full size. Toggle back and forth between the original size of both images to see how the unsharp mask improves the image. Even with sharpening, there is no comparison between the 10 MP SLR and 10 MP P&S cameras.

Image sensor as picture object to test the resolution. The fine structure is ideal for measurements in sharpness of the reverse lenses.

I found the sensor type number on the chip:

Image sensor CCD KC73129

• Number of Total Pixels: 537(H) ´ 597(V)

• Number of Effective Pixels: 500(H) ´ 582(V)

• Chip Size: 6.00mm(H) ´ 5.10mm(V)

• Unit Pixel Size: 9.80um(H) ´ 6.30um(V)

MOC: Sensor GTR. The rear end turned out well, I think, with the Ferrari-like taillights, the exhaust pipes (it's the first time I've tried that technique, but it won't be the last) and the engine cover.

Balloons are being prepared for launch during the 2014 - 2015 Balloon-Borne Full-Column Greenhouse Gas Profiling (FCGGS) field campaign conducted at the ARM Southern Great Plains (SGP) site. Measurements from these balloons will provide key constraints for remote sensing measurements obtained from ground- and space-based instrument platforms and will be used to quantify vertical atmospheric profiles up to 30 kilometers.
