Built in 1929, this Classical Revival-style building was designed by George Hopkinson to serve as a commercial high school for the then-growing east side of Cleveland, and was named for John Hay, former U.S. Secretary of State and resident of Cleveland, whom married Clara Stone, daughter of local business mogul Amasa Stone. The building is clad in cream brick with a stone base, stone trim, fluted ionic columns, ionic pilasters, and doric pilasters, a cornice with dentils, a low-slope roof enclosed by a parapet, window openings primarily arranged in groups of three, metal spandrel panels between the second and third floor windows, doorways with arched trim panels above them, juliet balconies with stone balustrades, decorative wall sconces flanking the entry doors, two internal light courts flanking a central auditorium and gymnasium wing, decorative screens on the second-story windows above the front entrance, arched niches with urns flanking the three front entrance door bays, decorative sculptural relief panels, and a windowless red brick modernist one-story gymnasium to the rear, linked to the building with a glass-enclosed corridor. The building was renovated between 2003 and 2006, modernizing the classrooms, updating building systems, and restoring the exterior and significant historic interior spaces, including the front lobby, cafeteria, and auditorium, with the project being carried out under the direction of Richard L. Bowen & Associates, Inc. The building presently houses several different magnet high school programs, including the Cleveland Early College High School, Cleveland School of Science and Medicine, and the Cleveland School of Architecture and Design.
