One of Save the Children Fund’s founding principles was to help children ‘regardless of race nationality, or creed’. Getting religious institutions to back this non-denominational approach was key to securing necessary funds and support. After Eglantyne Jebb wrote to Pope Benedict XV in 1919 he agreed to launch a special appeal on behalf of the Fund, a move which was soon followed by other churches and faith groups.

Caia versus Chimuara football match - an activity to increase awareness about the vulnerability of children, in terms of sexual abuse and other forms of exploitation, in high transit areas as well as near worker camps. A new bridge is planned for construction across the Zambezi Rivers between Caia and Chimaura. Although this bridge will bring lots of benefits to the area, Save the Children UK is concerned about the the exploitation of children, such as these footballers, who will live nearby workers camps. As Europe began to recover from the effects of the First World War, the Save the Children Fund responded to new emergencies arising elsewhere. The Fund fed thousands of refugees after the Greco-Turkish War of 1919-1922 and provided 157 million rations during the Russian famine of 1921-1923. As early as 1920, the charity was also turning its attention to children in need in the United Kingdom.

Mirlene and her infant twins, Kervens and Kevernson, take refuge in a camp on the grounds of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Port-au-Prince. Save the Children is launching Child Friendly Spaces and activities at the church in downtown Haiti. Child Friendly Spaces provide safety, structure and emotional healing to children who are suffering due to the loss and devastation they have experienced.
For nearly two weeks, children in #Gaza and southern #Israel have been facing harrowing scenes that nobody should ever have to witness. If the fighting doesn’t cease, children will continue to suffer. Find out more about the conflict and how you can help: bit.ly/1z0slXq
In the 1920s Save the Children Fund developed schemes which aimed to give the charity’s donors a sense of connection to the people they were helping. Donors could support a particular feeding station (as in this photograph), or an individual child through the ‘adoption’ scheme.

Majed, who is eight years old, has been in Za'atari camp, Jordan, for nearly one year since fleeing the conflict in Syria. He is suspected to be autistic and is extremely hyperactive. Majed has been lost several times inside the camp and has returned to his family by the efforts of the Lost Child Center staff.
Majed has been living in Za'atri Camp with his parents and siblings for eight months. The first time he wandered off was during the first ten days in the camp.
Majed's father, Salem: "You can imagine how we must feel as parents to lose our child here. The first time he was missing for more than three hours. We really did not know in which direction to start from. Back home, we had our own house with a gate that was always locked. We had more control over Majed's safety".
Ever since Save the Children established the Lost Child Center, supported by UN OCHA, 15 children on average have been daily reunited with their families. Through the staff's community mobilization efforts, parents, street leaders, imams and families are well aware of the center's services. At the camp entrance, police and security guards are familiar with the Center and focal points of contact if a child wanders off the camp. The center staff and volunteers have created child friendly maps, a free hotline service, identification cards for all families, and different coloured bracelets for each of the camp's 12 districts.
Syrian volunteers working at the Lost Child Center are identified by their green t-shirts and caps. The Center has a large green flag with a yellow circle in the middle for children and parents to easily identify its location. More than 1,150 lost children have been reunited with their families since the Center began functioning in February 2013.
