Turkey Creek Unit, Big Thicket National Preserve, Tyler County, Texas

This place has some of the most incredible rock outcroppings and topography, along with a massive Sarracenia alata population. You can see the yellow flowers scattered along the top of the ridge in this photo.

The unusual lid morphology is suggestive of Sarracenia leucophylla in this and one other photo. Both plants occurred within 20 feet of each other.

JSA23 Sarracenia Alata “De Soto, North Carolina”

Sarraceniaceae of North America lists Sarracenia alata as extirpated in Hardin County, Texas. It isn't! Unfortunately it's a poorly edited book in more ways than one.

 

This is part of a maybe 2 acre pitcher plant bog in the Big Thicket. This was the first time I'd been to the site and it was really impressive, despite being starved for fire. It's about a mile walk down an old road, and Drosera and Pinguicula grow in profusion the whole way down.

This pitcher plant bog was an amazing scene! It was located about 30 miles north of Biloxi, MS and went for a couple of miles.
