Modified from the Blackwork Sampler pattern in Alicia Paulson's book Embroidery Companion.

Un sampler fait pour la mère d'une amie à l'occasion de la fête des mères. Le top rose est en soie sauvage.

A first try out for the Penny Sampler, using needle turn applique. Now really trying to figure out how to add it to the sampler, I love the dog wood petal shape!

And it turns out I really like how the background fabric showing through. I considered using sew and turn applique, but this time needle turn and show-through give me just the right organic feeling...

Mixing my color scraps for the 'main' fabric and printed whites for my background fabric, I created a completely unique look and layout for Tula Pink's Modern Sampler.

I've finished my blocks for the Summer Sampler Series QAL - Yay!

I have LOVED this QAL. Some of the blocks I would never have thought I was capable of making (top left for example) but thanks to the excellent tutorials I've managed without too much seam ripping :)

Sampler Socks from the book Sock Yarn One Skein Wonders. Yarn is Same Difference from the Knitting Goddess, in colourway Cloudy Skies.

I thought this “Same Difference” yarn -- half a skein in white and blue, the other other half skein in blue and white -- would be a good match for these sampler socks, which each use a different combination of stitch patterns.

This is my first successful attempt at knitting socks!

I collect mending samplers, mostly Dutch and mostly about an hundred years old. I love the story of how they evolved from strips of cloth that women and girl's would travel with-- gathering their repertoire of available stitches in a world with few books and no internet-- to these schoolgirl demonstrations of practice and product. Many were sewn by young girls who would go on to work in other people's homes, monogramming their wash, decorating their table linens. This was their proof.

Rebecca Ringquist designed the sampler and I stitched it.

Friendship Sampler

by friends quilt.

Many donors are simply friends. Some of us are really proud to put our names on a difficult project. The Festival allows space to recognize the creator and the people who helped them as welll as the buyer. Let me tell you they believe in writing thank you letters to each and every donor/decorator. In 30 years I've only had 1 personal thank you from a buyer. I nearly fell thru the floor in shock. If it weren't for the buyer, these gestures of goodwill and thankfulness would not be possible on this scale. The endowment board of the hosp. would still be stuck with the measely 2% hocking tickets for visiting ice shows.

Finally finished, now in search of quilting ideas. Blogged here.

Lapbook Sampler - Side 2: (top to bottom) poof books (aka: mini-books, one-sheet book), accordian book

This is a sampler worked by Ann Maria Phillips, aged 10 in about 1810

The first verse reads,

'Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand

As the first effort of an infant's hand

And while her fingers on the canvas move,

Engage her tender thoughts to seek thy love.

With thy dear children let she have a part,

And write thy name thyself upon her heart.

According to the V&A authorship of this is attributed by some to the hymn-writer John Newton (1725-1807), best known for 'Amazing Grace', who is said to have written it for the sampler of his niece. It has also been suggested that it was composed by Isaac Watts (1674-1748) for his niece.

The same verse also appears on Catherine Palmer's and Ann Dunkley's samplers.

The second phrase is from Proverbs 31:30 and reads,

Favour is deceitful and beauty is vain but a woman

that feareth the Lord she shall be praised.

Samplers were first made in the 1400s or 1500s as a way of remembering different types of stitches or patterns. Over time they evolved into pieces of work made by young girls, proving their knowledge and patience.

The Herbert has over 60 samplers in its collection. With volunteers from NADFAS we have recently completed a project to improve their storage and to make them more accessible. You can see some of the samplers on display at the Herbert in the History Gallery, Connected and in What's in Store.

George M. Hoover's Saloon & Cigar Shop part of the Front Street replica at Boot Hill Museum in Dodge City, Kansas. The replica of Front Street was built in 1958. It was built after Dodge City lost out on a shrine to the "Cowboy Capital of the World" to Oklahoma City.

Boot Hill Museum was founded in 1947 as a Dodge City Jaycees community service project. The first building at the new museum was the Plains Museum. In 1958 a replica of historic Front Street was constructed. Several other buildings were moved to the two block museum over several decades. In 2008 it was named one of the 8 Wonders of Kansas History by the Kansas Samplers Foundation.

progress report for RR sampler, right side complete, detail shot

The jam sampler platter comes with 3 jams, 2 large buttermilk scones and butter ($7).

Silverware, linen and laser embossed wood serving platter complete the charming service. Also great company from Sophie and Bobby. :)

Kitten and the Bear is part retail, part jam and tea room. The small menu features a tight jam-friendly menu. Their hand-made, limited-batch jams and marmalades are cooked in a traditional French-style unlined copper confiture pan using seasonal heirloom fruit that’s spiked with spices, flowers/pine, tea and spirits with no additives or pectin. The bright fruit-forward confiture – some with chunks of soft fruit suspended within – come in flavours such as strawberry, gooseberry and fresh elderflower or blueberry, white peach and Sloane’s Masala Chai tea. They also carry clotted cream imported from Devon.

Hand pieced and quilted sampler quilt. This is my first quilt ever. I started it about two years ago, and the top is entirely hand pieced, and the quilt is entirely hand quilted. I actually finished piecing the top relatively fast, I just really procrastinated the quilting part. This was mostly because I got my mom's old machine and fell in love with how fast machine sewing goes! The quilt got its name because each of the squares made me think of instagram photos/filters.

Here's my take on the canvas Samplers from BasicGrey. They really are easy and a lot of fun to do!

Pasifika inspiration for zentanglers and henna artists :o)

I've loaded it here, on my personal account, as well as on our OodleArdle business account, because I can't put it in my own zentangle samplers gallery unless it's in a different Flickr account!

We partnered with The Current to bring great local music to the museum! Lady Midnight rocked the lobby stage, while Jay Smart and Lydia Liza graced the galleries with pop-up acoustic sets. Har Mar Superstar gave a tour of his favorites in the Mia collection and we heard Dave Muller’s personal music collection in his installation of our contemporary galleries. We also connected with the newest music museum in town, Paisley Park!
