This is a sampler worked by Sophia Maria Lomas from Nuneaton in 1868.
The text reads
I have found the joys of Heaven,
I am one of the angel band,
To my head a crown of gold,
Is given and a harp is in my hand,
I have learned the song they sing,
Whom Jesus hath set free,
And the glorious walls of Heaven,
Still ring with my new born melody
These are two verses from a hymn about The Believer in Glory.

Samplers were first made in the 1400s or 1500s as a way of remembering different types of stitches or patterns. Over time they evolved into pieces of work made by young girls, proving their knowledge and patience.
The Herbert has over 60 samplers in its collection. With volunteers from NADFAS we have recently completed a project to improve their storage and to make them more accessible. You can see some of the samplers on display at the Herbert in the History Gallery, Connected and in What's in Store.
Continental breakfast of burritos of a one day conference held at the California Endowment Center. Great THP training.
Here is a wood inlay “Quilt Sampler” that will beatify any sewing room wall or any wall for that matter. It is made from 400 diamonds and triangles cut from seven different kinds of wood. It is finished in all their natural colors, no stains or dyes. It measures 16” x 16” square.
The wood is listed on the back from the center out. The center wood is “Purpleheart” from Central or South America, “Wenge” from West Africa, “Satinwood” from Brazil, (Satinwood is the most beautiful yellow color with a satin look.), “Lacewood” from Australia, (Lacewood has a pretty copper color with rays in the grain.), “Imbuia” from Brazil, and “Hackberry” and “Walnut from Missouri”.

WEEK ONE TUTORIAL: quiltcetera.wordpress.com/2010/07/06/week-one-summer-star...
Some process shots of my HST sampler quilt. Made a a prize for the winner of a fundraiser auction for my friend's doula co-op.
This quilt is made with blocks from the Quilt Block Exchange. I quilted this as a piece to bring to quilt shops for longarm quiltling referrals.
