This is a sampler I made for a friend for the holidays. She loves Firefly. This is a quote from one of the characters (Wash), said by the Stegosaurus to the T-Rex.

Finally finished, now in search of quilting ideas. Blogged here.

Large alphabet cross stitch sampler, $1.50

Taken for Our Daily Challenge: ART AND/OR CRAFT, the topic for Tuesday, October 9

Made for the Western Washington Fair Home Arts / Creative Stitchery / Counted Thread exhibition (note shameless pandering to the Fair bottom centre), this picture has squares for each of Washington State's 39 counties, plus a few extra to make them come out even.

I stole the idea from a commercial pattern that featured a square for each of the United States, and then designed my own pictures for each of our counties.

Since I was standing in the accountancy line when design talent was being given out, it's probably wise to point out that the two things that look like off-colour grain silos next to the cherries in Yakima County are asparagus stalks. Thurston County is home to Olympia, our state capital. (The blue sheep in the Fair square are cars on the old wooden roller coaster, since demolished / disintegrated).

Quite the sampler and each one was delicious!

When this couple and I sat down to discuss her wedding consult at Starbucks, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I ordered my coffee, shook her hand, and we got right to business. I pulled out my book and starting writing in notes. My scribbles grew more frantic as Kim described her fantastical d...

1947 - From Virginia Sampler, choreographed by Valerie Bettis, the Pristine Lovers. Watercolour by Charles Elson

This is a sampler worked by Mary Mallaber in about 1821.

The text reads

Catch then, O catch the transient hour,

Improve each moment as it flies:

Life's a short summer, man a flower,

He dies; alas: how soon he dies

This is a quote from Dr Johnson, an author who published A Dictionary of the English Language in 1755.

The Herbert has over 60 samplers in its collection. With volunteers from NADFAS we have recently completed a project to improve their storage and to make them more accessible. You can see some of the samplers on display at the Herbert in the History Gallery, Connected and in What's in Store.

The almost done top made with the Habitat Blocks from the Portland Modern Quilt Guild. We each made one (or more) 12" (finished) blocks for this project.

A sampler block is a good way to test how fabrics go together before starting on a larger project. Find out more at The Patchsmith.

The most satisfying part f this piece for me were stitching the double rows of Dove's Eyes and Filet Squares. Yay for learning a new stitch.

This is my sampler for Lesson 5. It is based on the 'savewater' display garden at the Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show by Sustainable Gardening Australia. The 'smartie' tree is based on a sculpture by Lisa Jane Miller. The stitches are listed on my new blog: www.carlseapatch.wordpress.com

Starting on my first sampler in my sampler-a-month year. Blogged.

This sampler is a reproduction of an old pattern. It is cross stitch on linen.
