Late evening light at Castlerigg Stone Circle near Keswick, Lake District, Cumbria UK

Previous visits to this beautiful place on Anglesey have been blustery and wild but on this occasion there was an eerie calm and stillness. I accentuated this mood by choosing to make a long exposure which smoothed out what little texture there was in sea and sky. The result, I think is one of calmness and serenity

On a recent creative photography workshop I was leading we were experimenting with ICM (intentional camera movement). One of the customers asked if any images using this technique ever worked in black and white. I had to confess I'd only ever made a handful in mono which 'worked' with many seeming to require colour to give them a certain impact in addition to the effect created. However, as with other subject matter, and more traditional modus operandi, some scenes seem to work well, especially those with a structure, with texture and with a good tonal range. I'll be doing some more...

Power Generation Module being built for the Maersk Oil Culzean project by Sembmarine SLP, Lowestoft, Suffolk.

This is a Power Generation Module, part of a contract for the offshore facilities in the Culzean gas field in the UK North Sea, 145 miles east of Aberdeen. The Sembmarine SLP yard in Lowestoft, UK is undertaking the construction of this power generation module, two bridges and a flare. It contains three turbines.

The Culzean gas field is expected to be capable of providing around 5% of the UK’s total gas consumption by 2020/21. Massive items like this are loaded onto huge barges and towed to the site when ready.

A sunny March day after our cold, bleak weekend gave me a good opportunity to take a shot in the good bright light.
