#No DAPL - Stop Dakota Access Pipeline
San Francisco
November 15, 2016
At dawn, thousands gather at San Francisco Civic Center to stand in solidarity with the Standing Rock Sioux tribe in North Dakota and the massive gathering of Protectors standing against the Dakota Access Pipeline. A sunrise ceremony is followed by a march to the SF Army Corps of Engineers to increase pressure on them to not permit the laying of pipe under the Missouri River, a source of water for the tribe and millions of others.
The protest in San Francisco was one of over 200 actions across the country, calling for a stop to the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline and for the protection of water, sacred sites and the planet from the fossil fuel industry and it's funders.

Photos I took knowing it was my last few days in San Francisco -- more for my memories than for their photographic merit.
I'm sure that the Republicans will find a way to help this guy out, right? I'm sure that some big corporation will provide a social safety net for all of us, right?
Yeah. Right. I won't hold my breath.
As the 'Save The American Dream' rally wound down and the masses shuffled off into the sunny afternoon (or down the street to the protest in support of Libya) there was still a contingent of San Francisco's permanent homeless population scattered around City Hall plaza. I always have mixed feelings about photographing homeless people without asking first, but this was just too poignant when juxtaposed with the purpose of the rally.

Earth Day in San Francisco
April 23, 2022
Huge energized gathering of Bay Area Youth standing for Climate Justice for the neglected communities of Bayview Hunters Point and Treasure Island and calling for the immediate cleanup of toxic and radioactive waste!
From the organizers at Greenaction for Health and Environmental Justice and Youth Vs. Apocalypse:
"While it’s lovely that Earth Day is a universal day that everyone gathers around with the intention of combating climate change, we need to make sure that we are inclusive in our actions. Historically, Earth Day has been a day in San Francisco where places like Golden Gate Park and Crissy Fields are cleansed and cared for while low income communities of color, like Bayview Hunters Point and Treasure Island, have been neglected by city, state, and federal elected officials and agencies.
With full consciousness, the city is letting poor Black and Brown people die, allowing multiple generations to live on radioactive land and breathe dirty air. Our civic officials are complicit, silent, and indifferent about this because those most impacted are Black, Brown, and poor. We need to reframe how we celebrate this day with our actions.
This Earth Day, we call on those in the climate justice movement to fight with us to demand the cleanup of radioactive and toxic waste from our city. We call on those that recognize that at the root of the issues we face as low-income people, Black, Brown, Indigenous people, and as LGBTQ+ people, is a system profiting off of our struggles. We call on San Francisco to acknowledge our plight with climate injustice through actions."

I always love a good pun at a protest. Okay, okay - I always love a good (or bad) pun all the time...
