November 13th 2021

I'm travelling this week but, as somebody with a Christian Brothers education (very good, in fairness...), allow me to leave you with two perspectives on the recent Ryan Report that has caused much angst and hand-wringing throughout Ireland:

"A climate of fear, created by pervasive, excessive and arbitrary punishment, permeated most of the institutions and all those run for boys. Children lived with the daily terror of not knowing where the next beating was coming from... Acute and chronic contact and non-contact sexual abuse was reported... Sexual abuse was endemic in boys’ institutions... "

Commission to Inquire into Child Abuse ('Ryan Report'), 20 May 2009

"The congregation totally rejects any allegations of systemic abuse having taken place... [and] vehemently repudiates all unsubstantiated allegations of sexual abuse...”

Brother Kevin Mullan, Head of the Christian Brothers in Europe, 15 May 2009

Br Mullan can be contacted by post: Christian Brothers Province Centre, Griffith Avenue, Marino, Dublin 9, Ireland; email: cbprov@edmundrice.eu; phone: +353 1 807 3300.

Moynihan Train Hall NYC walking tour to Penn Station Amtrak LIRR Grand Opening January 1, 2021

Led by Empire State Development (ESD), the $1.6 billion project was accomplished through an innovative public-private partnership between ESD, Vornado Realty Trust, The Related Companies, Skanska, the MTA, the Long Island Rail Road, Amtrak, and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. It utilized a design-build approach to streamline construction and expedite completion. Construction of Moynihan Train Hall has generated an estimated economic impact of $5 billion, supporting more than 5,000 construction jobs and 11,000 indirect jobs. Additionally, the core project management team was more than 42 percent women.

Moynihan Train Hall reshapes the travel experience of the busiest passenger transportation facility in the Western Hemisphere, used by more than 700,000 passengers per day - more than LaGuardia, John F. Kennedy and Newark International Airports combined. The main hall that once served as the Post Office's mail sorting room is reminiscent of the original Penn Station's vaulted concourse, showcasing a 92-foot-high skylight that holds an acre of glass. Supported by three of the building's original steel trusses with an intricate lattice framework, the new skylight encloses soars above the train concourse, bathing passengers in natural light.

Daniel Patrick Moynihan, (born March 16, 1927, Tulsa, Oklahoma, U.S.—died March 26, 2003, Washington, D.C.), American scholar and Democratic Party politician, U.S. senator from New York state from 1977 to 2001.

Moynihan had long championed the project, which is modeled after the original Penn Station; he had shined shoes in the original station as a boy during the Great Depression. During his latter years in the Senate, Moynihan had to secure federal approvals and financing for the project.

After 20 years of Winter’s Eve at Lincoln Square, the Lincoln Square BID is pleased to share that we are planning a new and different holiday celebration by offering the community and visitors a month-long series of smaller pop-up family friendly performances and activations for everyone to enjoy.

Although we are bringing back a holiday tree at Dante Park, a large tree lighting celebration will remain on pause. We are excited to announce that the successful Tumbling Brights–our whimsical illuminated sculptures launched during our darker days of COVID-19 last year–will return with five additional installations in the heart of our district. More details on activations, which includes our neighborhood holiday lighting program and other surprises, will be announced in the near future so the community and visitors will be able to celebrate the holidays and support local businesses, restaurants and cultural institutions in the Lincoln Square neighborhood throughout the entire holiday season.

***

The holidays are here and the Lincoln Square BID is celebrating the neighborhood's comeback with the return of the Lincoln Square Holiday Tree; an expansion of Tumbling Brights; and a month-long series of pop-up, family-friendly performances. The festivities will begin tonight, Monday, December 6, rain or shine, when we officially light our Holiday Tree at Dante Park with Frank London and the Klezmer Brass Allstars!

We're also highlighting special holiday programming and deals around the neighborhood this month, so if you're a Lincoln Square BID business or cultural organization with a holiday offer, menu, gift guide, or other seasonal special, let us know what you're doing and we will promote it on our website, on social media and in our weekly eblast so that locals and visitors will know what's happening in Lincoln Square!

Don't miss Lincoln Square's lights, delights, and more throughout December! Click here:

The Lincoln Square Holiday Tree is lit Come see it at Dante Park (Broadway & 64th St) throughout the holiday season and don’t miss our pop up performances on Wednesdays in December right in front of the tree. Link in bio for more information on Holidays in Lincoln Square.

Penn Station MTA Long Island Rail Road Subway 1 2 3 A C E Moynihan Train Hall Pennsylvania Station NYC MTA LIRR Long Island Rail Road Amtrak train station Grand Opening Day January 1, 2021

Central Park NYC Belvedere Castle New York City USA

#BelvedereCastle #CentralParkNYC #USA

Belvedere Castle is a folly in Central Park in Manhattan, New York City. It contains exhibit rooms and an observation deck, and since 1919, has housed Central Park’s official weather station.

Belvedere Castle was designed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux in 1867–1869. An architectural hybrid of Gothic and Romanesque styles, Vaux's design called for a Manhattan schist and granite structure with a corner tower with conical cap, with the existing lookout over parapet walls between them. Its name comes from belvedere, which means "beautiful view" in Italian.

Belvedere Castle was built as a shell with doors and windows open to the weather.  Originally, the main tower had a more medieval design, with a weather antenna on top, but during the castle's 1983 renovation, the tower was restored in a German style with a flag, a weather vane, and an anemometer on top. The two fanciful half-timbered wooden pavilions deteriorated without painting and upkeep and were removed before 1900, but restored in the 1980s.

Starting in 1919, Belvedere Castle housed the New York Meteorological Observatory, which had been taken over by the United States Weather Bureau. The current weather station in Central Park, an Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS), is located immediately south of the castle, though wind equipment is still located on the main tower.

A castle is a type of fortified structure built during the Middle Ages predominantly by the nobility or royalty and by military orders. Scholars debate the scope of the word castle, but usually consider it to be the private fortified residence of a lord or noble.

Click here:
