Polaroid Week Day 3

The sacred Lakota Mountain, Bear Butte, is an atmospheric place, given to sudden changes such as rain, fog, hail, and ultimately this.

My first visit to this Glen. This is 7 vertical images stitched together in Lightroom to create this panorama. The road on the left goes on for some distance into the Glen but eventually it ends in a cul-de-sac. Well worth a visit despite the narrow, twisty 3 mile road to get to this observation point & free car park from the A86.

Bit of a flashback to the beautiful country of New Zealand. Would love to get back once this pandemic is over! Happy Weekend!!

The view of Mount Fitz Roy taken from Las Águias hiking trail. Fitz Roy is a mountain located near the town of El Chaltén in southern Patagonia, on the border between Argentina and Chile. With its 3405 m, it is far from being one of the highest peaks of the Andes, but nevertheless it is one of the most difficult to climb.

Didn’t quite catch the focus here, but after a rather heavy crop thought this made for an interesting candid photo.

Polaroid Week 2018

Fitz Roy (Patagonia) 20240205

Monte Fitz Roy (also known as Cerro Chaltén, Cerro Fitz Roy, or simply Mount Fitz Roy) is a mountain in Patagonia, on the border between Argentina and Chile It is located in the Southern Patagonian Ice Field, near El Chaltén village and Viedma Lake. It was first climbed in 1952 by French alpinists Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone.

Argentina and Chile have agreed that their international border detours eastwards to pass over the main summit but a large part of the border to the south of the summit, as far as Cerro Murallón, remains undefined. The mountain is the symbol of the Argentine Santa Cruz Province, which includes its representation on its flag and its coat of arms.

Nevertheless, most of the summit remains in uncontested Argentinian territory, including its famous peak (which is inaccessible from the Chilean side), and even enjoying its sight remains – in practical terms – pretty much restricted to the Eastern slopes of the Andes.

The iconic Roy's on old Route 66 is now open again on a limited basis.Built in 1938,Roy's grew to become one of California's most popular stops on old Route 66.A hotel,restauarant,24 hour garage and filling station were all part of the popular stopping place. After old Route 66 was decommissioned in 1972,Roy's and the town of Amboy were effectively cutoff and went into a tailspin that they were really never able to come out of.The caretaker that was running the service station the day we stopped was a very informative character...and only too happy to sell us some $5 gas....

Some great history on Roy's and the Amboy area on old Route 66....

Fitz Roy (Patagonia) 20240205

The Cerro Fitz Roy, also known as Cerro Chaltén, is a mountain located near the village of El Chaltén, in Patagonia, on the border between Argentina and Chile.

Fitz Roy is situated in the province of Santa Cruz (Argentina) and in the Magallanes and Chilean Antarctica region (Chile).

It gave its name to the Fitz Roy massif and rises just five kilometers northeast of Cerro Torre. Its altitude is 3,405 meters. It was first climbed by the French mountaineers Lionel Terray and Guido Magnone in 1952.

The Fitz Roy is located both in the Los Glaciares National Park (Argentina) and the Bernardo O’Higgins National Park (Chile).

I only had one opportunity to visit this location while in Patagonia and I lucked out with this absolutely blazing sunset. I couldn't really have asked for more as this magical little waterfall was surrounded by fall colors with Fitz Roy, one of the most impressive mountain peaks in the world, looking down over it all.

National Landmark, bucket list photography subject, and one of iconic spots on the mother road.

Long before the ascent of any these impressive peaks was envisioned and the western explorers discovered this land, the king of this land was the wind, who shared its kingdom with the original inhabitants of this land, the Tehuelches. They referred to this mountain as “Chaltel” or “Chaltén” meaning smoking mountain, a name no doubt inspired by the clouds that so often trail from the summit. Unfortunately the western newcomers had their heads too full of heroes to celebrate and appreciate the poetry of the original Tehuelche name.

It was Francisco Pascasio “Perito” Moreno that renamed the peak after Robert Fitz Roy, an English astronomer and sailor (1805-1865), who was partly responsible for the first accurate mapping of the intricate watersheds and shorelines of Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego. On his second trip to Patagonia in 1834, together with Charles Darwin, Fitz Roy set out to explore the Río Santa Cruz in hopes of reaching the Andes, but after sailing 140 miles up river they were forced to turn around, resigning themselves to a very distant sight of the snow covered mountains.

Of the mountain he later christened as Cerro Fitz Roy Moreno writes: “Los Tehuelches me han mencionado varias veces y con terror supersticioso, esta ‘montaña humenate’. Es el ‘Chalten’ que vomita humo y cenizas y que hace temblar la tierra...” He later on explains his reasons for renaming the peak “Cerro Fitz Roy”: “...como el nombre de ‘Chalten’ que le dan los indios lo aplican ellos también a otras montañas, me permito llamarle ‘Fitz Roy’, como una muestra de gratitud que los argentinos debemos a la memoria del sabio y enérgico almirante inglés...” The reasoning seems in accordance to the principles of the early explores, who felt they were discovering a land that had in fact been inhabited for almost 12.000 years.

The clouds that so often trail the summit tricked everyone, from the Tehuelches to Moreno, into thinking the peak was a volcano. It was not until 1899 that German naturalist Rodolfo Hauthal visited the area and clearly established that the peak was in fact granite.

Roys Peak is a mountain in New Zealand, standing between Wanaka and Glendhu Bay. It offers 5-6 hours one-way, with views across Lake Wanaka and up to the peak of Mount Aspiring/Tititea. The track zigzags steeply up the side of Mount Roy, through thick grass until the ridge to the summit. It was not an easy track if you carry your camera, tripod...

Seemed like the clouds were looking good tonight so I took a ride out to Roy's. I was not paying close attention to camera settings and didn't get what was wanted. It's about 2½ hours round trip including fuel and buying a snack. It was 70 degrees F (21 degrees C) after the sun went down. It seems like Spring may finally have arrived in the Mojave.

It looks like the bridge east of Roy's on National Trails Highway had a structural problem. It's closed. People were going around through the wash but National Trails Highway (County Road 66) is signed as closed. You can't get to Kelbaker Rd. unless you go around the bridge through the wash. It's a little muddy and I didn't try it.

The road closure is not good. Many of the old Route 66 bridges have wood structural parts. It may be a while before it's back in service.

Sorry, I don't have anything new, school and work get in the way!! Well, School is almost over. I graduate in June, then the pressure is on to get a job...I probably won't be able to shoot anything new consistently until next year :(

It will be so nice to only have work to worry about. Shit, what happens if I want to get my PhD or DNP? I'll never be finished with school...

There’s few better views than up at Roy’s Peak. Taken at sunrise during Autumn.
