Tasting Britain got an invite to Mark Hix's Cock 'n' Bull Gallery / CNB Gallery to meet the fine people at Silent Pool Distillers. CNB Gallery lives underneath the rather East London, and rather hip Tramshed, on Rivington Street. For those who are unaware, the Tramshed is a restaurant that was once a power generator for the East End tram network (I didn't actually know there was a tram network but there you go). Now it focuses on casual dining (mainly stuff made with steak and chicken), and there you shall find Damien Hirstâs formaldehyde preserved cow and chicken, suspended from a high ceiling over the dining area. Itâsâ¦memorable, to say the least

Anyway, more about the gin: the Silent Pool Distillery, which was started by a group of friends, is located in Albury, Surrey - on the Duke of Northumberland's Estate, and the site of the Silent Pool. They claim itâs a sacred site, Iâm just not sure who holds it sacred. The Silent Pool has a bit of history and mystery about it. Much beloved of the poet Alfred Tennyson, itâs also thought to be haunted by the ghost of a woodcutterâs daughter, who drowned there trying to escape a man on horseback (possibly King John), sometime back in the 13th century. She can supposedly be seen at Midnight, perhaps waiting (in vain) for metaphysical closure?

Anyhow, they renovated what was a dilapidated farm, brought in a Holstein copper still and got cracking. The signature product is, obviously, the Silent Pool gin. Itâs a moreâ¦traditional tasting, juniper driven one, made up of 24 botanicals, and is the brainchild of Silent Poolâs master blender, Cory Mason (and his strong Victorian moustache). Cory holds an MSc from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling at Herriot Watt University in Edinburgh, and before he moved to the UK, used to work in New York managing various venues and making cocktails. Presumably he decided to up sticks and make GIN happen, and so here we are. The distillery is open seven days a week and people are welcome to come and visit (and I willâ¦)

The latest technology. This is an air powered TrainLink FRED. There is a battery but it is much smaller. An air powered generator is inside and runs on air from the train's brake pipe. You can hear the generator's high pitched hum as it is running.

The steam powered generator chugs along, providing electricity to the building.

While many survivors concerned themselves with rebuilding power generators and forts, a small group living just north of the city decided to rebuild the one thing that mattered to them the most: the theatre. With the stage complete, all they need to do now is set up the lighting rig, wind machine and make some seats.

However, the construction of the theatre is taking longer than expected, causing great annoyance to the actors who are trying to rehearse ‘The Tempest’ for opening night.

This was our island hopping ride for the day - the first hybrid powered ferry to enter commercial service... It has wind powered generators, solar panels, and runs on battery power while entering/leaving dock.

Colchester Road Fire HQ Station, Ipswich. Power generator in case of mains failing, c.1963.

These photographs depict the life of the fire service in the town and neighbouring areas. Retired Ipswich fireman John Harvey bought four of Billy Griss's photo albums – he was a former fire service colleague and good amateur photographer. The photographs are annotated from the albums, supplemented by John’s memories.

(Work began to demolish fire station in July 2012 having closed in the previous October when new premises were opened in Ransomes Europark - see Awards Album 2012. Plans to build sixty homes on the site were soon fulfilled.)

Stay there without not much lighting, only several light which powered by a power generator which automatically charged by solar cell. On the mid-night they turned off all of the light and we were only be lighted by the moonlight.

Commucations equipment would not work without power, and that power has to come from somwhere. Here, Lance Corporal Van Wyk, Danish Army, checks fluid levels on one of the generators powering those important communications devices in support of the Allied Rapid Reaction Corps. Members of the ARRC, 16 Air Assault Brigade, JFC-Naples and various other elements of NATO Forces came together for Exercise Noble Ledger to certify that the ARRC is capable and ready to assume command of the NATO Response Force mission throughout 2013. Taking command of NRF means that the ARRC will be rapidly deployable and could be called upon at any moment to deploy worldwide in support of combat or humanitarian relief efforts.

The school recently received a power generator to ensure the school has heating and electricity during power outages.

UNOPS has been working with the Ukraine Humanitarian Fund to help make energy supply more stable. At the beginning of 2023, UNOPS helped deliver more than 320 electricity generators to 13 regions in Ukraine as part of an emergency response project.

Funded by the UHF, the generators will power district heating and healthcare facilities, helping ensure essential public services are able to function in case of power outages.

To the left is a big power generator behind the walls. Was it always that? I can see it's lost the upper level and any roof if it had one...I've got a feeling it was formerly something else because I suspect the building itself predates electrical generators, but I could be wrong!

"Uring powered generator" in Null Sector at EMF Camp.

Ledbury, Eastnor

June-2022

Old sign for a long-abandoned proposal to build an electricity terminal station at Thompson Road, Lyndhurst, west of Dandenong-Hastongs Road, now Western Port Highway by the former State Electricity Commission (SEC) of Victoria.

The completion of a 500 kV transmission line to the nearby terminal station site at Cranbourne (duplicated in the late 1980's) saw that site upgraded with this proposal soon abandoned. The state-owned SEC took over a number of private and municipal power generators and distributors in the 1920's and 30's and continued until break up and ultimate privatisation by the Kennett Government in the 1990s creating a number of distribution, retail and generation companies as well as a single transmission company in Victoria.

The Mill at Gelligroes in Pontllanfraith dates back to approximately 1625. There have been several improvements made including a water powered generator which was built in 1908 to provide electricity for the Mill and the house. A major restoration was made in 1993, and the mill now incorporates a candle making factory.

It is currently undergoing refurbishment work.
