Temporarily moored just off the North end of Kirkwall Pier today I caught this shot of the Scotrenewables SR250 Tidal Power device.
There is much more about Scotrenewables Tidal Power Ltd which is Orkney-based, and their SR250 power generator online at ...
The tag EMEC refers to the European Marine Energy Centre which is based in Stromness, Orkney
No! I was not really standing at the gates of hell!
This is from the facade of one of the scary rides on Morey's Pier on Wildwood's boardwalk.
Our house still has no power.....generator is still hummin'. (thank heavens!)
I don't know if the kids will even trick or treat around here tonight.......there are still pockets of people with no power, and I suspect there is still an awful lot of debris and downed trees laying around that could make traversing the back streets difficult and dangerous for little ones..
This will be one Halloween I think everyone will remember for a long, long time!
These new fangled power generators have come to New Zealand's home of Hydro electricity. Most of the countries power is generated in the lower South Island but we pay the most for it. Have yet to figure that one out!

fort skanskop, pretoria
from wikipedia-
The three German forts[edit]
Fort Schanskop, Fort Wonderboompoort and Fort Klapperkop were designed by Von Dewitz and Werner of the German engineering company Krupp, assisted by architect Christiaan Kuntz and building contractor Celso Giri.
The three forts are pentagonal reinforced, with more fire range possibilities through numerous facets. Attacks from any direction could be warded off by revolving guns on their ramparts. To prevent infantry attacks, loopholes were built into the walls. Trenches, barbed-wire entanglements and fortified rooms were erected as reinforcements.
These forts were the most modern structures of their time and modern mediums of communication, such as telephones, were used to equip the telegraph room.
Many black labourers and about 400 white builders, mostly Italians, were involved in the building of these forts. To address technical aspects such as the electrical connections between forts, German and Dutch experts were consulted.

Occupants31[2]
This fort was built at a cost of GBP £47,500. It was handed over to the government on 6 April 1897. It was supplied with a paraffin engine powered generator for electricity, electrical lighting and a search light. A telephone and telegraphic links were also installed. Water was supplied from a pump station in the Fountains Valley which was shared with the nearby Fort Klapperkop.
The garrison was initially armed with one officer and 30 men and was armed with 37 mm Maxim-Nordenfeldt cannon, Martini-Henry hand-cranked Maxim machine guns and a 155 mm Creusot gun (also known colloquially as a "Long Tom"). By October 1899, only 17 men were still stationed at the fort.
Both the garrison and the armaments were gradually reduced during the course of the Second Anglo-Boer war until there was only one man and no guns left over on 5 June 1900, the day on which British forces occupied Pretoria.[4] The fort was briefly occupied in 1993 by Willem Ratte to protest the multi-racial government of South Africa at the cost of Boer and Afrikaner heritage.[5]
The surrounding area currently includes a refurbished statue of Danie Theron which was originally erected at the Danie Theron Combat School in Kimberley. The statue was moved to its current location at Fort Schanskop and unveiled on 6 March 2002.
Also included on the premises is a scale model replica of the Trek Monument that was inaugurated on 16 December 1954 in Tanzania (Formerly known as Tanganyika).
Fort Schanskop is a Gauteng Provincial Heritage Site and a provincial heritage site.[6]

After water enters the diversion tunnels and then rerouted and funneled to the penstock tunnels, they descend into the powerhouses. Originally, four Francis Power Generators operated, in 1939 the largest hydroelectric facility in the world. By 1961, the current 17 generators (8 Nevada, 9 Arizona) were operating, producing 1345 MW of power. In 1993 the trubines were upgraded to Pelton Turbine Generators, and has a capacity of 2080 MW.
Here the entire Nevada-side Powerhouse is shown. Only 7 generators are running, the last, its wheel shown in front, is undergoing repairs.

THE CREW EXPLORATION VEHICLE
President George W. Bush announced in a January 2004 speech on space issues that a new space vehicle was to be designed that would "transform America into a truly spacefaring nation." That vehicle was to be the Crew Exploration Vehicle (CEV). The vehicle was to be able to ferry astronauts to the International Space Station after the retirement of the Space Shuttle but it would also, as its primary mission, carry astronauts out of low Earth orbit to destinations relegated to NASA's dust bin after the Apollo program was terminated.
"Project Constellation" utilizes concepts that were first envisioned during the Apollo program as viable solutions to delivering NASA astronauts to Mars. Components would be designed that could be mated for specific missions. Crew modules, power and propulsion modules, storage and lander modules could all be incorporated in building orbiting space stations, long-range cruisers, and landers suitable for a wide variety of extra-orbital ventures. Two design groups led by Boeing-Grumman and Lockheed Martin, have submitted proposals thus far.
Boeing's design resurrects an Apollo-style capsule-shaped crew module while Lockheed's employs a lifting body crew module similar is form to the X-20 Dyna-Soar or to several of the more recent designs for ISS support vehicles. Otherwise, the competing systems utilize similar sets of mission and propulsion modules.
Following is a proposed timeline for CEV development (lol):
2008 First prototype is launched. Final design for a lunar mission is selected.
2011 - First unmanned flight in Earth orbit.
2014 - First manned flight in Earth orbit. First unmanned flight of lunar lander
2015 First manned flight of lunar vehicle.
2015 to 2020-First lunar landing by astronauts.

An Old Veteran Awaits the Call
In the casemate adjacent to the North Bastion, we find this aged veteran waiting for its recall to duty. I never saw this particular space while I was working at Fort Trumbull at the Naval Undersea Systems Center, but the interior of the Fort was configured differently then; with the casemates enclosed and walls erected in places since returned to their open structure. I do not know if this generator is an artifact of the U.S. Coast Guard Academy era, the Merchant Marine Academy, Columbia University, University of Connecticut or the U.S. Naval Underwater Sound Lab. So many masters…
I tried to shoot this with three different exposures before I switched on an interior light to get the right backlighting. The electrical switchgear to the right has meters to measure voltage, current and frequency. It allows the operator to switch from mains power to the emergency generator and back with minimal disturbance -- and prevents 'brownout' conditions while the engine comes up to speed. Dingo48 said he couldn't tell me whether the engine is gasoline or diesel without a close inspection. If it is diesel, it is probably in good enough condition to bring online, in the event of a power emergency, with a minimum of service.
Energy- and water-conserving devices. Portable, off-grid solar-powered generators with battery storage for power outages, cabins, events, construction, home and business. No noise, fuel or fumes.

CEA Project Logistics Myanmar recently carried out the demobilisation of 14 Gas Powered Generator Sets and accompanying parts and accessories from a Power Plant project in Kyaukpyu, Rakhine State to Yangon and then onwards to Singapore.
The initial part of this project began with the transportation of the vehicles and equipment necessary for the demobilisation. A 1500 Tonne Landing Craft Tank (LCT) barge was loaded then sailed from Yangon to Kyaukpyu on the West Coast of Myanmar. In preparation for the barge’s arrival, a section of beach was cleared with an excavator and steel plates laid down to ensure a smooth, safe roll off for all vehicle’s and equipment.
Due to the project involving a beach landing, careful attention was paid to the local high tides to ensure the barge arrived and departed at the optimum time without any interruption or delay to the operation. CEA carried out all crane operations at the Power Plant site and transportation of the 14 Generators Sets housed in 20ft Containers to the Posco-Daewoo Jetty 15km away. The containers and accessories were lifted and loaded onto the barge in two separate shifts over 24 hours.
Upon arrival at the Myanmar International Port in Yangon CEA completed all the necessary customs documentation. After approval was granted from the Myanmar Customs Office the generators were shipped to Singapore to undergo maintenance and be readied for use on another Power Plant project.
For this project, CEA Myanmar worked in conjunction with the Kyaukpyu Government, Myanmar Customs Office, Myanmar Port Authority and the Posco-Daewoo Oil Company. Total project duration from start to completion was 7 days.

Tasting Britain got an invite to Mark Hix's Cock 'n' Bull Gallery / CNB Gallery to meet the fine people at Silent Pool Distillers. CNB Gallery lives underneath the rather East London, and rather hip Tramshed, on Rivington Street. For those who are unaware, the Tramshed is a restaurant that was once a power generator for the East End tram network (I didn't actually know there was a tram network but there you go). Now it focuses on casual dining (mainly stuff made with steak and chicken), and there you shall find Damien Hirstâs formaldehyde preserved cow and chicken, suspended from a high ceiling over the dining area. Itâsâ¦memorable, to say the least
Anyway, more about the gin: the Silent Pool Distillery, which was started by a group of friends, is located in Albury, Surrey - on the Duke of Northumberland's Estate, and the site of the Silent Pool. They claim itâs a sacred site, Iâm just not sure who holds it sacred. The Silent Pool has a bit of history and mystery about it. Much beloved of the poet Alfred Tennyson, itâs also thought to be haunted by the ghost of a woodcutterâs daughter, who drowned there trying to escape a man on horseback (possibly King John), sometime back in the 13th century. She can supposedly be seen at Midnight, perhaps waiting (in vain) for metaphysical closure?
Anyhow, they renovated what was a dilapidated farm, brought in a Holstein copper still and got cracking. The signature product is, obviously, the Silent Pool gin. Itâs a moreâ¦traditional tasting, juniper driven one, made up of 24 botanicals, and is the brainchild of Silent Poolâs master blender, Cory Mason (and his strong Victorian moustache). Cory holds an MSc from the Institute of Brewing and Distilling at Herriot Watt University in Edinburgh, and before he moved to the UK, used to work in New York managing various venues and making cocktails. Presumably he decided to up sticks and make GIN happen, and so here we are. The distillery is open seven days a week and people are welcome to come and visit (and I willâ¦)

Old sign for a long-abandoned proposal to build an electricity terminal station at Thompson Road, Lyndhurst, west of Dandenong-Hastongs Road, now Western Port Highway by the former State Electricity Commission (SEC) of Victoria.
The completion of a 500 kV transmission line to the nearby terminal station site at Cranbourne (duplicated in the late 1980's) saw that site upgraded with this proposal soon abandoned. The state-owned SEC took over a number of private and municipal power generators and distributors in the 1920's and 30's and continued until break up and ultimate privatisation by the Kennett Government in the 1990s creating a number of distribution, retail and generation companies as well as a single transmission company in Victoria.
The Eagle Helicycle is a single place homebuilt helicopter with a modified Solar T-62 turbine engine. The T-62 turbine is used mainly in helicopters as an APU or ground power generator. Six belts drive the tail rotor shaft and the main gearbox. This is likely the smallest helicopter I will ever see.
