On a dull and cloudy winter day, My attention was drawn to a plane tree because the branches were showing up as a pale ghostlike structure. When I got nearer I discovered the beautiful textures and map like patterns on the Trunk. This happens as pieces of bark are shed, leaving pale areas which gradually darken as time passes

The branches had larger shed areas, which show up a light grey from a distance. When I returned on a brighter day the effect was less noticeable.

A street scene with the typical plane trees of Provence and the interesting architecture.

Anyone who can claim such a crown is truly a king or queen ! The fascinating crown of this old plane tree in the Botanical Garden in Vienna would provide light shade for quite a large group of people.

A bit of street photography in Rome

The D99 between Cavaillon and St-Remy-de-Provence (Check it out on google, van Gogh spent some time there in a mental institution and painted many of his pictures there) may well be one of the longest plane tree alleys - it's almost 10km long.

Unfortunately, it's also one of the most used roads in Provence, so you have to be really patient, to be able to photograph it, without cars...

A wide, frontal shot of the Wallfahrtsbasilika St. Georg in Walldürn, Germany, on an overcast day. The impressive church features a facade constructed from reddish-brown sandstone blocks, accented by lighter stone pilasters and cornices. The central section of the facade has a prominent entrance with a dark wooden door, above which is an ornate niche containing a statue, likely of Saint George. Above this, there are two large rectangular windows with intricate grilles. The roof is dark grey, likely slate, with a steep pitch, and two smaller spires rise from the sides of the main roofline, each topped with a golden weather vane in the shape of a rooster and a cross. The sky is uniformly grey and cloudy. On either side of the church, several bare deciduous trees, likely pollarded plane trees, with distinctive gnarled branches, line what appears to be a street or plaza. In the background, other buildings of the town are faintly visible.

In Trikala, Greece, the autumn leaves create a carpet —all red and gold— on which a female figure walks away… Lēthaeus river bank ( Ληθαῖος Lēthæus aka Lithéos ).

Plane Tree in Nordkirchen

London Planetree trunks in dappled light. Some may call these American Sycamore, but the Planetree is a hybrid of the American Sycamore and a Far East tree called the Oriental Plane. The sycamore and this tree barks are similar. The white is the old bark, the dark is the new bark. The thin bark exfoliate (shed in layers) year long. One theory for this is so that the tree can protect itself from parasites and other insects from persisting on its bark and branches. They can also be quite noisy when the barks shed. You can literally hear them roll up and shoot off the trees!I heard this from the Planetrees where I work. It's also the second most populous tree in NYC parks and roadsides-Wikipedia & by Fiona Watts & Douglas Still

a millenium plane tree - Agios Ioannis -

l'arbre monstre -

un platane millénaire - vu à Agios Ioannis

dans le sud de l'île de Kos - Grèce

This shows the centre of the market town of Aups, a drive of about 20 minutes north east of Cotignac. The platane trees (plane trees) provide superb protection against the sun of the south of France. We had just been for a walk around the backstreets and enjoying a coffee under the trees while waiting for Bob who was having her grooming session nearby.

During my short visit, I tried to capture as many images as I could of sights that were unique to rural France.

One such image is surely this beautiful example on the approach to Uzes; a straight avenue, lined by Plane trees passing through vineyards under a beating sun.

As Andrew says below, most of the big ones standing today probably date from Napoleonic times, but apparently King Henri IV began the planting back in the 16th century to provide both wood and shade for his marching armies.

I was shocked to discover that such tree-lined avenues are now very much an endangered species, and more than 90% of such trees have already gone.

Sometimes it is the march of progress, such as the removal of 40 kilometres worth of trees near Toulouse to allow Airbus A380 components to be transported by road.

Amazingly others have fallen foul to 'road safety vigilantes', cut down by folk campaigning against the number of people who are killed every year running into roadside trees - trees are fairly unforgiving in that respect, although some would argue it is hardly the tree's fault if a motorist runs into them.

It takes a Plane tree 100 years to grow - and about 5 minutes to fell. Here's hoping sense prevails and these tree lined avenues survive, it would be a tragedy if they all vanished.

See them while you can.

..and yes - I had second thoughts and went for a closer crop!

This camera worked but had some issues (mainly the shutter stuck quite a bit in the release), so I sent it for a CLA to Graflex Parts in Duluth, Minnesota (USA), and now it works beautifully.

This is the church of Santa Maria de Merlès in the background. My late father painted this very scene long ago as an oil painting, and also made a lithography, of which we had one at home.
