How do you manage trees that were planted in the 1960s as part of post-war housing development in the third decade of the 21st Millennium? With great care, dinosaur smoke and mankind’s great pursuit in conquest over nature.
The process being undertaken in these photos is what's called pollarding, where a trees limbs are removed entirely to encourage later dense growth within 1 to 2 years. Only certain species of trees can handle this brutal operation, like these London Plane trees here. Once a tree is pollarded, it has to be regularly maintained in 5-10 year operations.
Historically, wood harvested from this method would be used to feed livestock or for light timber, but these days, thanks to the infernal combustion engine, two operatives can pollard five trees in as many hours, with the tree limbs being quite violently mechanically separated and carted off to be used either as mulch or biofuel.
I find arboriculture rather fascinating; living amongst the trees in an urban environment, arborists have been a regular sight over the years, performing everything from whole tree clearings to dead wood pruning, I’ve seen them do a lot.
It’s a highly skilled profession with some of the most dangerous and violent tools possible in the workplace – Darwin Award nominees are quickly weeded out.
There is a strange beauty to the brutality of efficiency, especially towards articles of nature.

The other variety of European? American Plane tree has a golden and beige color scheme. This one at mid-day shows its bright slivery skin.
I feel we should always except lorris. There was the poet Guillaume de Lorris who should be excepted from all responsibility. Then there was the Charter of Lorris which as we all know prohibited the burghers of the town from travelling further from home than they could return the same day. Now that was a good climate mitigation measure. Let's not forget the little village of Lorris itself, which is not far from Orleans, and for that reason should definitely be excepted. Though admittedly I'm not sure why. Oh, perhaps because there was once a Treaty of Lorris in which Henry lost ground to Louis, but who the hell cares.

Liam describes the hostile ecosystem the butterflies must contend with. We had just passed a plaza with ornate flowers sprayed with pesticides, which the swallowtails avoid. Here, at the sycamore, larvae could fall out of the tree and land on the hard ground instead of a forest floor.

Governator Schwarzenegger has emerged as some kind of treehugger in his retirement, and I hope that some good can come out of it.
Lest we forget, though, this is the guy who had three Humvees and basically promoted the brand (at one point, driving one through Manhattan, albeit with a bicycle on the roof to make it look cooler), before upgrading to a Unimog. Also, he got into office on a platform of motorists not paying vehicle fees, which led to a budget shortfall for maintaining highways. He filled in the shortfall with a bond measure that adds the cost of decades of debt service.
So now he's out of office, boasting green credentials at the Commonwealth Club, while whoever's in office for those decades is getting blamed for the bill he stuck us with. Not one penny of which is good for the environment.

As part of Patient Centered Care Awareness Month, Secretary Landgraf presented a proclamation from Gov. Jack Markell and Lt. Gov. Matt Denn to Bayhealth. “What makes Kent General’s and Bayhealth’s approach so effective is that you help to empower patients and their families by ensuring that they are central to all decisions made about a patient’s care,” she said. The international Spirit of Planetree Awards honor care that focuses holistically on mental, emotional, spiritual and physical healing. Honored were Dr. Christie Miller (Physicians Champion); Maria Stir, RN-4A (Caregiver Champion); and pet therapy dog Jack with owner Kayleigh Karnbach (2013 Pet Therapy Animal of the Year for Planetree).
