The scientific name for the London Planetree is Plantanus Xacerifolia. This London Planetree can grow between 70-100 feet tall. The leaves have 3-5 pointed lobes and are a medium green color that turn red. Their fruits are bristly brown balls and the flowers are ball like catkins. By February or March, the fruits fall off the tree and it blooms during the spring. The bark of the London Planetree is is smooth and mottled. It has patches of white, grey, and brown spots on the bark. It grows in moist to wet soil in the eastern United States. Because of its ability to withstand air pollution and drought it is often planted beside the city streets. The wood from the trunk is used furniture, flooring, butcher blocks, and musical instruments because it is almost impossible to split. Two native plants were crossed to create this hybrid tree. In 1700, the first specimen of this tree was found in Oxford.

Platanus is a genus comprising a small number of tree species native to the Northern Hemisphere. They are the sole living members of the family Platanaceae.

All members of Platanus are tall, reaching 30–50 m in height. All except for P. kerrii are deciduous, and most are found in riparian or other wetland habitats in the wild, though proving drought-tolerant in cultivation. The hybrid London Plane has proved particularly tolerant of urban conditions.

They are often known in English as planes or plane trees. Some North American species are called sycamores.

Both the look and the exhibit's title reminded me of our hairgelled mayor at the time.

Caledonia waterfalls, is one of the highest water falls in Cyprus. It is located on Platres village in Troodos and the water fells from a height of 12 meters. It can be reached via a walking path.

Caledonia waterfall is surrounded by forest in a very beautiful area with breathtaking views. The trail is 3km long and can last up to 2 hours. It can also be divided into two parts, the first one which is the higher one that leads to the waterfalls and the second one which leads from the waterfall to Platres.

How do you manage trees that were planted in the 1960s as part of post-war housing development in the third decade of the 21st Millennium? With great care, dinosaur smoke and mankind’s great pursuit in conquest over nature.

The process being undertaken in these photos is what's called pollarding, where a trees limbs are removed entirely to encourage later dense growth within 1 to 2 years. Only certain species of trees can handle this brutal operation, like these London Plane trees here. Once a tree is pollarded, it has to be regularly maintained in 5-10 year operations.

Historically, wood harvested from this method would be used to feed livestock or for light timber, but these days, thanks to the infernal combustion engine, two operatives can pollard five trees in as many hours, with the tree limbs being quite violently mechanically separated and carted off to be used either as mulch or biofuel.

I find arboriculture rather fascinating; living amongst the trees in an urban environment, arborists have been a regular sight over the years, performing everything from whole tree clearings to dead wood pruning, I’ve seen them do a lot.

It’s a highly skilled profession with some of the most dangerous and violent tools possible in the workplace – Darwin Award nominees are quickly weeded out.

There is a strange beauty to the brutality of efficiency, especially towards articles of nature.
