Plane tree / Platane (Platanus)

Better big on black!

Along the Quai de la Bruche (near the covered Bridges) is the oldest plane tree in the city of Strasbourg. More than 300 years ago, an immense walnut tree was there, but it did not withstand the rigor of the winter of 1704. It had to be felled. The current plane tree is his authentic successor

The Quai de la Bruche had, until the French Revolution, for the name Wasserzoll. This name was due to the tax that was then applied to goods entering Strasbourg by water. This toll was levied by the city at this location.

iphone multiple exposure, possibly my only attempt at a vaguely festive image :-) Merry Christmas everyone!

platanus hybrida

Taken during a visit to a small market town called Aups which we visit quite frequently for the market and on occasion to visit a haberdasher we've found who's been sewing this and that for us. It's a delightful place full of unexpected turns and alleyways and little arched throughways like you see in the photo.

We visited Villecroze this morning to see the vet with Bob (routine, nothing serious) and after almost a week of heavy rain the skies were blue and it was a glorious start to the Easter weekend.

The four plane trees in the park near the castle of Novara were planted in the first half of the nineteenth century and are the oldest trees in Novara. They have branches that extend horizontally for over 15 meters and exceed 40 meters in height.

The trunk reaches a circumference of over 5 meters

They are of the genus Platinus acerifolia

They are registered in the list of monumental trees in Italy

Many thanks to everyone who will pass by visiting my shots. Comments are appreciated. You are welcome. Sergio

Another shot of café life in the beautiful village of Tourtour. The dappled light in the centre of the village never fails to please the eye

This shows the main street in the very beautiful Provençal village of Tourtour which sits atop a hill that affords you amazing views looking south towards the Mediterranean. It's about 30 minutes drive from Cotignac. I've uploaded photos before from here in colour and in B&W so wanted to do something a little different with this. I chose the 'yellowing' preset in Silver Efex Pro 2. I thought it suited the old feel of the place, like you've either stepped back in time or stepped onto a filmset. We have had my partner's very recently widowed 80 year old aunt from Toulon staying with us all week in order to give her a break from feeling lonely in her apartment in the city and despite living in the south of France for most of her life she had never visited Tourtour hence our visit there again.

Happy weekends all round!

It's said, this plane tree alley is the most beautiful road at Sao Miguel. The blue hydrangea is the emblematic flower of the Azores. It can be found everywhere, especially on Sao Miguel, Fajal, Flores, and Pico. The hydrangea was brought to the islands by sailors at the end of the 18th century and has since become naturalized there. Its blue color is caused by the acidic volcanic soil; on alkaline soil with a pH above 6, the hydrangea blossoms turn pink and red. Azoreans recognize the attractiveness of hydrangea hedges and are increasingly planting them along roadsides.

It's not as Christmassy as traditional Christmas markets but it still has its own charms. The local fire station set up tables and chairs where you could buy a plate of fresh oysters and mulled wine and sausages in a baguette. All the restaurants that are open during the winter put on special festive menus for lunchtime and lots of craftspeople have the stalls that you see. You could also take a ride around the village in a horse drawn carriage. In the evening there was an amazing fireworks show over the village.
