London plane tree
Platanus × acerifolia, London plane, London planetree, or hybrid plane, is a tree in the genus Platanus. It is usually thought to be a hybrid of Platanus orientalis and Platanus occidentalis. Windsor great park
Bohemian Waxwing / bombycilla garrulus. Carrington, Nottingham. 11/01/17.
My first visit to Carrington, Nottingham, to look for the reported Waxwings.
Seeing them (AT A HEIGHT) was easy because, between feeding bouts, they liked to sit in the sun at the top of a tall Plane tree.
Their favoured Rowan feasting tree lay directly across a busy road from this and was considerably shorter. Every so often they would descend to its laden red berry sprays. The trouble was that these visits were extremely brief and they landed in the centre or back of the tree, meaning they were mostly obscured.
So, all in all, a successful day for locating these beauties easily in a busy urban setting and viewing them from afar..
A frustrating day for watching them at closer quarters....and a completely hopeless day for photographing any!!!
I made the resolve to return and thanked my lucky stars that at least I had managed some record shots of them.
Our Wingbuddy tour bus returned us to our hotel Marquesa de Pombal on Lisbon's Av.da Liberdade. We are out walking the city streets.
This is the bole of a Plane Tree on Liberdade. Plane Trees line the large boulevard (90 metres wide x 1,000 metres long).
Avenida da Liberdade was styled after the wide boulevards of Paris but was originally a park solely for the rich of Lisbon.
Original part of a park built in 1764 for the nobility only but In 1821, King John VI commanded that the gates be removed and the street was opened for public use.
This alley of plane trees at Chateau de Valbourgès bore witness to the second Allied invasion of France on 15 August, 1944 (Operation Dragoon). US glider pilots, with only limited training, were among the first troops to land here, and left bits of glider metal encased in the tree tops and trunks.
I had a lovely late afternoon into evening outing at Melbourne's famous Southbank with the Flickr Famous Five + Group. Walking along the corniche by the Yarra River provides some beautiful views of the Melbourne central business district, also known as "the grid" because the original Melbourne city was based on a grid of main streets.
Southbank is a vibrant arts and dining precinct built along the Yarra River on the former site of the Allan's Sweets factory and other industrial buildings. It was transformed into a densely populated district of high rise apartment and office buildings beginning in the early 1990s, as part of an urban renewal program. With the exceptions of the cultural precinct along nearby St Kilda Road, few buildings built before this time were spared by redevelopment. Today, Southbank is dominated by high-rise development. It is one of the primary business centres in Greater Melbourne. Southbank Promenade and Southgate Restaurant and Shopping Precinct, on the southern bank of the Yarra River is one of Melbourne's major entertainment precincts.
Bright foliage overhead on King William Street as I drove home tonight after work. I am stopped at the traffic lights when I shot this.
On 26th of February 2010. Belgrade (Serbia) authorities conducted what you could call a tree genocide and an ecocide. A massive cut-down of about 500 of century old plane trees had taken place on one of the Belgrade's longest streets, The Boulevard of King Alexander. Lame excuses were made: it was said that "experts" have determined that "all trees are terminally ill and are dangerous for public", although the plane trees of the same generation were left untouched in the other half of the Boulevard. Protests failed and the cutting had taken place in the end of February, leaving one of the most busy and polluted streets of Belgrade bare naked, without shade and natural air filtering. Exact motives for this misdeed are still unknown.
Boulevard's plane trees were given to Belgrade by Austria after the WW I, as a part of the war reparations.

The beautiful mountain river of Voidomatis in the Vikos Aoos National Park in Epirus in Northwestern Greece.
Voidomatis is a tributary of the Aoos river, originated from the banks of Tymfi mountain (the summit of which is seen in the b/g), streaming through the Vikos Gorge.
This mountainous river has been characterized as the “cleanest river” in Europe, as it does not face any environmental issues, flowing through one of the most beautiful and unspoiled natural locations of Greece in the Vikos–Aoos National Park.
The river is spanned by numerous very old and picturesque stone bridges, and is well known for water sports such as rafting, canoeing and kayaking.
Two girls found an environmentally-friendly way to quickly travel Rue Danton. Our hotel was on this quiet sidestreet (not so quiet on weekend nights). Hopefully they obeyed the 30 km/hr speed limit
Looks best in largest size.
I rather liked this back-lit view of newly emergent leaves on one of London's many Plane trees. They had only just burst; fortunately the air was quite still so I was able to move in close; I'd like to be able to get a better depth of Field though!
A surprise find in the Rouge National Park, the lovely sycamore!
American Sycamore (Plantanus occidentalis)
The sycamore can grow to be 35 m in height, 200 cm in diameter, and live to be 250 years old, making it one of the largest deciduous trees in eastern North America. The largest American Sycamore tree in Ontario is located in Alvinston and has a diameter at breast height of 236 cm. Other common names include buttonwood and buttonball-tree after the fuzzy, spherical fruiting balls that dangle from the tree like Christmas ornaments. Each fruiting ball contains numerous, tiny seed-like fruits that are carried by wind and water, and require sunlight to germinate. The sycamore can be easily identified in all seasons by its distinctive bark. The outer brown bark flakes off in large patches exposing the green, white or cream-coloured inner bark creating a camouflage-looking pattern.

“The harbour is old, I can’t wait any longer
for the friend who left the island with the pine trees
for the friend who left the island with the plane trees
for the friend who left for the open sea.”

One may understand the cosmos, but never the ego; the self is more distant than any star.

Musica: Band of Horses - The Funeral:
"...a les fulles mortes, només els queda volar. Abans que caiguessin, tenien arbres en els quals dipositar les seves esperances."
"...a las hojas muertas, sólo les queda volar. Antes de que cayeran, tenían árboles en los que depositar sus esperanzas."

Time is too slow for those who wait,
too swift for those who fear,
too long for those who grieve,
too short for those who rejoice,
but for those who love,
time is eternity.

every time I am at Mission winery I take a picture of the alley leading from the gate. How many photos of the same alley one needs? Well, I put it to you is it humanly possible for a person with a camera to go past this alley without taking a photo no matter how many times you pass. You're in doubt? Try it yourself!

The church of the little town of Therissos, in Crete, shaded by a huge platanus tree. Lovely place, very peaceful, tranquil. The road from Chania goes through the "Gorge of Therissos", a very nice drive by all accounts.
