The promenade known as "El Vall", in the Catalan town of Berga. Here "vall" does not mean dance (which is "ball"), but ditch, from the Latin vallum. It was obviuosly part of the medieval walls. It's so empty because it's the summer of the coronavirus.

Zumaia (Spanish: Zumaya) is a small town in the north of Spain in the Basque Country.

It is located at the point where the Urola and Narrondo rivers come together. The origins of the town can be traced by its ancient monastery. In the Middle Ages, the people that lived in the Sehatz valley having to endure the continuous attacks of pirates and pillagers, fortified the city. The church today retains the relic of its defensive appearance.

The town has two beaches (Itzurun and Santiago), which are of interest to geologists because they are situated among the longest set of continuous rock strata in the world. Known locally as the "flysch" they date from the mid-cretaceous period to the present, a time period of over 100 million years. The K-T boundary is present at the Itzurun beach, and fossils can be found, notably of ammonites. The strata stretches along a distance of about 8 km, between the towns/beaches of Deba and Getaria, with Zumaia lying in the middle (see photo in the comment box). en.Wikipedia

=======================

Picture taken with a Hasselblad SWC, made in 1976; Kodak Aerochrome infrarred film, expired at least from 2011; f11 at 1/250 s., with orange filter; developed with the C41 kit by Bellini.

After the very much expected spring rains of this March 2024 I visited the mighty Roure de la Senyora, a huge centuries old oak in central Catalonia. But even as everything was fortunately very green again, most of this oak's branches had no leaves at all. I think the last severe drought has been very damaging. So sad...

Without a doubt, the most desired and valued emulsion today (and we're talking about expired film since at least 2011 or earlier) is the Kodak Aerochrome. You've probably heard of it by now if you do analog photography. It is a color infrared emulsion, theoretically to be developed as a slide, but it is often more convenient to develop it as a negative with the C41 process, since it is less demanding on a correct exposure (and it is a lot) , especially now that it's expired. Although it rated at ISO 400 for slides, better to expose for ISO 320 as a negative.

London plane tree

Platanus × acerifolia, London plane, London planetree, or hybrid plane, is a tree in the genus Platanus. It is usually thought to be a hybrid of Platanus orientalis and Platanus occidentalis. Windsor great park

Bohemian Waxwing / bombycilla garrulus. Carrington, Nottingham. 11/01/17.

My first visit to Carrington, Nottingham, to look for the reported Waxwings.

Seeing them (AT A HEIGHT) was easy because, between feeding bouts, they liked to sit in the sun at the top of a tall Plane tree.

Their favoured Rowan feasting tree lay directly across a busy road from this and was considerably shorter. Every so often they would descend to its laden red berry sprays. The trouble was that these visits were extremely brief and they landed in the centre or back of the tree, meaning they were mostly obscured.

So, all in all, a successful day for locating these beauties easily in a busy urban setting and viewing them from afar..

A frustrating day for watching them at closer quarters....and a completely hopeless day for photographing any!!!

I made the resolve to return and thanked my lucky stars that at least I had managed some record shots of them.

Our Wingbuddy tour bus returned us to our hotel Marquesa de Pombal on Lisbon's Av.da Liberdade. We are out walking the city streets.

This is the bole of a Plane Tree on Liberdade. Plane Trees line the large boulevard (90 metres wide x 1,000 metres long).

Avenida da Liberdade was styled after the wide boulevards of Paris but was originally a park solely for the rich of Lisbon.

Original part of a park built in 1764 for the nobility only but In 1821, King John VI commanded that the gates be removed and the street was opened for public use.

This alley of plane trees at Chateau de Valbourgès bore witness to the second Allied invasion of France on 15 August, 1944 (Operation Dragoon). US glider pilots, with only limited training, were among the first troops to land here, and left bits of glider metal encased in the tree tops and trunks.

I had a lovely late afternoon into evening outing at Melbourne's famous Southbank with the Flickr Famous Five + Group. Walking along the corniche by the Yarra River provides some beautiful views of the Melbourne central business district, also known as "the grid" because the original Melbourne city was based on a grid of main streets.

Southbank is a vibrant arts and dining precinct built along the Yarra River on the former site of the Allan's Sweets factory and other industrial buildings. It was transformed into a densely populated district of high rise apartment and office buildings beginning in the early 1990s, as part of an urban renewal program. With the exceptions of the cultural precinct along nearby St Kilda Road, few buildings built before this time were spared by redevelopment. Today, Southbank is dominated by high-rise development. It is one of the primary business centres in Greater Melbourne. Southbank Promenade and Southgate Restaurant and Shopping Precinct, on the southern bank of the Yarra River is one of Melbourne's major entertainment precincts.

On 26th of February 2010. Belgrade (Serbia) authorities conducted what you could call a tree genocide and an ecocide. A massive cut-down of about 500 of century old plane trees had taken place on one of the Belgrade's longest streets, The Boulevard of King Alexander. Lame excuses were made: it was said that "experts" have determined that "all trees are terminally ill and are dangerous for public", although the plane trees of the same generation were left untouched in the other half of the Boulevard. Protests failed and the cutting had taken place in the end of February, leaving one of the most busy and polluted streets of Belgrade bare naked, without shade and natural air filtering. Exact motives for this misdeed are still unknown.

Boulevard's plane trees were given to Belgrade by Austria after the WW I, as a part of the war reparations.
