The pine processionary (Thaumetopoea pityocampa) is a moth of the subfamily Thaumetopoeinae in the family Notodontidae, known for the irritating hairs of its caterpillars, their processions, and the economic damage they cause in coniferous forests.
Toxicity :
Stinging hairs contain a toxic protein that is very irritating and inflammatory: thaumetopoein. It penetrates where the “harpoon” is planted: most often in the skin, but also in the eye, the nose, the mouth…
The hair breaks and the toxin released causes a reaction similar to that of nettle stings: red pimples in the form of blisters, red itchy patches, appear on the skin.
General symptoms may occur in the event of significant exposure. The immune system then goes into overdrive, which can lead to a sudden drop in blood pressure, discomfort or loss of consciousness.
Is there a risk for animals? With their noses at ground level, animals are exposed to contact with these stinging hairs, particularly dogs. They can get it on their coat, or even take a caterpillar in their mouth, which can cause very serious inflammatory reactions including necrosis of the tongue.

Des symptômes généraux peuvent survenir en cas d’exposition importante. Le système immunitaire s’emballe alors, pouvant mener à une baisse brutale de la tension artérielle, un malaise ou une perte de connaissance.
Y a-t-il un risque pour les animaux ? La truffe au ras du sol, les animaux sont exposés au contact avec ces poils urticants, notamment les chiens. Ils peuvent en avoir sur le pelage, voire prendre une chenille dans leur gueule, ce qui peut provoquer des réactions inflammatoires très graves jusqu’à une nécrose de la langue.

In Afrikaans this pretty, sunny plant is called Soetharpuisbos; the 'soet' = 'sweet'; the 'harpuis' is derived from the Dutch 'hars' for 'resin' + 'puistje' for 'pimple'. The sap of the plant is oozed out of its stems in small, pimply shaped droplets. Reportedly it's sweet but poisonous to cattle.
For their multiplication these Drone Flies are 'going at it' on a bright Wide-Eyed (for Euryops), yellow bed.

Xylaria hypoxylon is a species of bioluminescent fungus in the family Xylariaceae. It is known by a variety of common names, such as the candlestick fungus, the candlesnuff fungus, carbon antlers, or the stag's horn fungus.The fruit bodies, characterized by erect, elongated black branches with whitened tips, typically grow in clusters on decaying hardwood. The fungus can cause a root rot in hawthorn and gooseberry plants.
Fruit bodies (ascocarps) are cylindrical or flattened with dimensions of 3–8 centimetres (1+1⁄8–3+1⁄8 in) tall × 2–8 mm thick. The erect ascocarps are often twisted or bent, and typically sparsely branched, often in a shape resembling a stag's antlers. Specimens found earlier in the season, in spring, may be covered completely in asexual spores (conidia), which manifests itself as a white to grayish powdery deposit. Later in the season, mature ascocarps are charcoal-black, and have minute pimple-like bumps called perithecia on the surface. These are minute rounded spore bearing structures with tiny holes, or ostioles, for the release of sexual spores (ascospores). The perithecia are embedded in the flesh of the ascocarp, the stroma, which is tough, elastic, and white. Within the perithecia, the asci are 100 × 8 μm.
Ascospores are kidney-shaped, black, and smooth, with dimensions of 10–14 × 4–6 μm. The asexual spores (mitospores) are ellipsoid in shape, smooth, and hyaline.
Although not poisonous, the small size and tough texture of this fungus deter consumption. It is considered inedible by some guides.

.. Just! I've reached the peak of Cnap a'Chleirich and can now see where I am headed, but it is a lot further than I had anticipated. I considered giving up at this point as the tiny pimple on the horizon (if you can see it) marks the summit of Beinn a'Bhuird. But, I've done all the climbing, now it's just a matter of distance, I've come all this way, I can't give up now!!
Climbing Ben Avon (pronounced Ben A'an) which stands at 1171 meters (3842 feet), and Beinn a'Bhuird (pronounced Ben a-voashed) standing at 1197 meters (3927 feet), sees me covering a distance of just over 24 miles. They are my 2nd & 3rd Munro's of the season, and bring me to a total of 26 now.

The seemingly bigger Volcano in the background is Ngauruhoe while Tongariro’s Red Crater is in front. As a matter of fact, Tongariro is a lot bigger than Ngauruhoe. Ngauruhoe Volcano really sits on Tongariro’s flank like a pimple :-)
On the skyline, on the left, the western ridge of the Monch leads down to Jungfraujoch, the pimple in the shoulder that is the highest railway station in Europe. The ridge continues westwards to the Jungfrau mountain, on whose western slope is the white pyramid of the Silberhorn. The void beneath the flyer is Lauterbrunnental, but the flyer is a long way short of that valley, and is in fact flying out over the town of Interlaken.

I missed most of the peak time for heather this year. However, I did manage to pop up to Stanage one school night, when there seemed like there might be a tiny break in the cloud cover. For once, I was right 😊 The light lasted for about 3 minutes! Or maybe a little bit more but whilst I was still in flap mode 😁

Not many people get the chance to visit this iconic natural wonder in their lifetime, let alone twice. Many consider it an uninteresting place or just too remote to make the effort. It was always on my bucket list when we decided to honeymoon in Australia way back in Oct 1997.
There are not many places in the world I’ve been to that makes you realise how insignificant you are as a species let alone an individual. This was made even more apparent when I was afforded the opportunity to sit in the cockpit 3rd seat of the BAe 146 aircraft for the last 20 minutes of our flight as we approached Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park.
The red centre from above looks completely barren in every direction you look, way beyond the horizon that altitude grants you. I asked the co-pilot sitting in the right-hand seat where Ayres Rock was? (that was the name back in those days) He replied, “look dead ahead it’s that singular rock formation”. Once my eye had zoned in on the tiny ‘pimple’ way in the distance, I felt a sense of disappointment… was this truly the icon I had read about in magazines and seen on the nature programmes or a mass marketing campaign orchestrated by the Australia Tourist Board!
However, as we started to descend on our final approach path, this pimple began to rise from its barren landscape growing in stature with every mile gained. We circled it on final approach and all my disappointments faded into wonderment… its simply bloody massive and spectacular glowing in the midday sun. I couldn’t wait to land and get out and explore this landscape.
To cut to the chase, we only had a limited time here, but had planned a packed itinerary - sunset tour, climb the rock (more about that another time), day trip to the Olgas and a last-minute helicopter flight. My only regret, my photos turned out rubbish, so this part of the holiday was really about making amends. However, the best laid plans of mice and men!
For anyone going or thinking of visiting Uluru, you may want to read future postings on Uluru. The things the marketing and tour operators don’t tell you.
On top of Win Hill lies Win Hill Pike, locally known as the Pimple. Win Hill Pike has an Ordnance Survey triangulation point, or trig point. Sometimes misnamed the Old Witches Knoll.

"Well, I was just out trying to snap a few keepsakes, you know, to show the grandkids someday..."
Little did he know that this had happened moments earlier, perpetrated by this man. In a rage, this man the comp-stompee, roamed the streets looking for anyone, anyone at all, to inflict his exacting revenge upon.
"Ya, so like I was saying, I was just minding my own business, setting up my tripod, you know, to take a photo under the bridge. Besides, I once took Little Billie with me to an afternoon open mic at Where Heads Meet and he really liked it. Well, all of a sudden...
You guessed it, this happened. It is a sad, sad world we live in... sad, sad world...
*Oh, of note: The police are actively looking for this man, apparently as an eye-witness to the whole gruesome affair.

Another long-range long-lens shot of Moel Famau in the Clwydian hills with its 'pimple' (a ruined building) on top. This time the mountains are dusted in snow and the shot was taken from Storeton.
Ansco Readyset Royal cameras were made from 1925 to 1932. They were covered with leather pimpled and dyed brown to look like ostrich skin. They produced 2 1/2" by 4 1/4" negatives using B2 Agfa, 4A Ansco, or 120 Kodak film. They had a simple f8 fixed focus lens and a shutter speed of 1/30 and a cable release. The shutter still works perfectly in my nearly century-old camera which I posed on a fence post on a cold, windy winter day.
