This stunning art project at Toronto's Scotiabank Nuit Blanche festival featured a series of live dancers in a giant tank, that would fill and drain with water as they tried to complete daily, mundane tasks. Imagine you were just going about your day... then boom, water gushes in, because all of the polar ice caps have melted! A very poignant piece on climate change.

"The Let Go" is an immersive, participatory art installation at the Park Avenue Armory by artist Nick Cave. The huge tinsel curtains curve and move through the space along with the dancers (both performers and audience members). These photos were taken during the day time hours there is a full performance in the evening with sound suit costumes and guest singers.

At the Hirshhorn (10/29/2016). The work features a single, sequin-clad woman strumming an E-minor chord endlessly, rotating on a pedestal in a gold-tinseled room, a performance that walks a characteristic line between kitsch and earnest commentary on feminine objectification. A rotating cast of Washington-area musicians will play the "Woman."

I used to sub in one of the bands that played at The Lost Spirits Distillery last year. It’s a very cool place, but you can’t take any photos other than your cell phone. I always wished that I could’ve taken 1 of my DSLR cameras and a fast lens. There were a lot of possibilities for some wonderful photos!!

Supplique (2021) – Performance by Amélia Sampaio

A prayer for freedom.

This performance addresses freedom not as an individual right, but as a collective experience, fragile, shaped by tension and resistance. It also calls for alterity as a foundation of any shared construction. In a suspended posture, the body questions power, memory, and the possibility of a shared breath.

This photograph captures a festive street performance featuring two performers dressed in black outfits adorned with reflective or metallic patterns. One performer is holding a flaming torch, indicating a fire performance. The background includes a sign that reads "oh! CHRISTMAS TREE" and "only tainmen," likely referring to "entertainment." There are also blurred figures and a horse-drawn carriage, suggesting a holiday setting. The scene takes place outdoors, likely in the evening or night, given the dim lighting and presence of streetlights.

The combination of the performers, the fire element, and the festive decorations creates a dynamic and captivating image that showcases the artistry and excitement of holiday street performances.

"Larmes de Coton" (Tears of Cotton) is a performance by artist Amélia Sampaio that explores the haunting legacy of colonial exploitation in the Americas. For many Afro-descendants, cotton—like coffee or sugarcane—is not just a plant, but a painful symbol of forced labor and enslavement.

In this work, the artist stages a silent ritual of remembrance and resistance, where each gesture resonates with ancestral memory. The white softness of cotton contrasts sharply with the violence of its history, evoking both mourning and resilience.

Artist Tsedaye Makonnen's performance art "Astral Sea" The Need for Collective Refuge" at the Met Museum

From the Met Museum's website "Ethiopian-American multidisciplinary artist Tsedaye Makonnen, whose Astral Sea textiles are displayed as part of The Met's Africa & Byzantium exhibition, activates the textiles with The Need for Collective Refuge, a new site-specific performance that journeys through the history of the Byzantine Era's African diaspora. Join us for this unique processional meditation on resilience, memory and migration, which merges spiritual, ceremonial, and performative elements of the Astral Sea series and explores the power of collective action and the potential for a better future."

The We're Here! gang is visiting the Performance Art group today. Fred is such a good sport. ;)

Und now iss zhe time on Sprockets whenn ve dahhnce!

Last Saturday, we played 'City,' which is an activity that literally involves everyone involved in Elsewhere, and whoever else shows up to play. Essentially, you dress up in a wacky outfit of your choice, assume an identity (derived largely from the clothing you're wearing), and interact with each other. And you drink (a lot, if you're nervous -- like I was).

This was a stretch for me, but after a couple whiskeys I got into it. As into it as a first-timer could get, I imagine. I did, however, get some amazing photos.

I couldn't help but think of Charly Aguirre and the photos we made earlier this year when the performance began this night. It did in fact include a performer with a hula hoop on fire. This was my favorite of the long exposures I attempted while sitting nearby the performance.

400 ISO, f/8, 0.5 seconds, handheld. Getting a long exposure of a performance includes a fair amount of luck getting the movement to create something interesting, especially when handheld. Sometimes you just do the best you can, shoot a bunch of frames and see what you get.
