One of the many unusual fountains of Madrid, it was comissioned in 1776 by King Carlos 111 to stand in Paseo del Prado and moved to its current site in the Parque del Retiro in 1880. Celebrates the importance of the artichoke as winter food in the 18th century. Designed by Ventura Rodriguez, 18th century architect and sculptor.
Amid the rush and bustle of the city, enclosed by the Calles Alfonso XII, Alcalá and Menéndez Pelayo with their heavy traffic, the Parque del Retiro is an oasis of peace.
