Lintel of a wounded and divided Europe, Germany will vote in August and September of 2017, and for the first time in its history the prospect of a grand coalition between Christian Democrats and Social Democrats seems at risk. Will Angela Merkel be able to prevent instability also reaching the center of the continent? Can the Social Democrats stop the erosion of consensus that has affected them since the Hartz reforms of Gerhard Schroeder? And what consequences might a result beyond the expectations of Alternative fur Deutschland have for the future of the Old Continent?

Some journalists approach algorithmic assistance the way one might consider hopping into a self-driving car: some are delighted, some are wary. How can software assist reporting, and how might a novice get started?

Covering migration towards Europe offers a variety of possibilities for alternative narrations and new formats. Can re-thinking new strategies, even technological, for reporting migration also have a social impact? And can it force some mainstream media to change their vision of the world, starting from specific storytelling experiments where migrants are the main protagonists?

We are arguably in the golden age of audience-engaged journalism. But the growing problem of online harassment is troubling individual journalists and newsrooms alike. It’s an issue confronted by both male and female journalists, but women are far more frequently subjected to sexual harassment and graphic threats of physical violence.

Electionland was a unique collaborative project to track and cover voting problems during the 2016 US elections across the whole country and in real-time. It was also the largest social newsgathering effort ever undertaken with more than 600 people monitoring for any instances of voter suppression and more than 400 journalists chasing down the stories in the field. The need to cover the vote was particularly urgent as states passed laws that could affect citizens’ access to the ballot box, and one of the presidential candidates cast doubt on the validity of the entire system. In this session those responsible for key parts of this ambitious project will tell you how we did it, where the biggest challenges lay and how it all played out on the day.

According to Edelman’s Trust Barometer, the world of business is “the last retaining wall” to stop the emergence of a post-truth and fake-news world. This is due to the fact that, according to the study, people place greater trust in news produced by companies than in news offered by the media. Companies know that lying is bad for business and that the digital era has transformed them into “news companies.” Is news increasingly becoming corporate? What are the risks and prospects for readers and what are the responsibilities for companies and journalists?

No nation and no continent can be considered safe from armed radicalism and thus from the terrorist threat. The danger does not come only from ISIS which has become increasingly weakened. A high number of foreign fighters, after joined the Islamic State, could return to their home countries to carry out attacks. The news of a supposed appeal of the Caliph Al Bagdadi addressed to the scattered cells in the world to come into action could be realistic. The eventual military defeat of Daesh in Syria and Iraq could make the terrorist threat even more dangerous in Europe and around the world. In this scenario, the role of the media, especially social networks, remains essential, both for the so-called “Islamic state,” which uses them for recruiting and propaganda, and for governments that scour the web to try to identify and stop potential threats.

Journalism organisations have run many experiments aimed at strengthening engagement, expertise, and revenue – holding debates, opening cultural venues, running cafes, and sponsoring hackathons. But there’s a growing phenomenon of people experimenting with actually doing journalism in live settings – storytelling in theatres, collaborative photo walks, mass interview events, or real-time factcheckathons, for example. It’s most widespread in the USA, but it’s taking off in other places too. Alternative and independent media have used live journalism events in incredibly creative ways around events like the Olympics, for example. What could live events of this kind bring to journalism at large? This panel brings together live journalism experiments and businesses from Denmark, France and the Netherlands, to share new lessons and ideas about journalism, trust and engagement.

Anyone organizing events, conferences and panels is often faced with a visual shock: once the leaflet is printed or the session is online, they realize there are only male speakers. The media aren’t performing much better: only 18% of the experts interviewed on Italian TV or newspapers are women (Global Media Monitoring Project 2015). How we are to extricate ourselves from the mental laziness of having a “male expert” by default? How is it possible to create authoritative role models for girls – either scientists, professionals or managers?

The right with the workers, the left with the multinationals. Giorgio Gaber would be in crisis today, if he were to sing “What is right, what is left.” Old certainties have collapsed, one after the other. And so the billionaire Donald Trump, Republican and conservative, won thanks to the anti-establishment vote at the expense of Democrat Hillary Clinton, seen as the guarantor of the interests of Wall Street. And while the leader of the Italian left, Matteo Renzi, flew to America choosing as inspiration the high priests of Silicon Valley, the Italian right rides popular anger with criticism of the single currency and the European Union.

2016 was a year of memes in Western politics, from #CatsAgainstBrexit to Pepe the Frog to #NastyWomen, as meme shells, GIFs and selfies enter the political vernacular. Love them or hate them, internet memes make up a critical part of our contemporary media environment, and they’ve been documented in their role in spreading misinformation, disseminating important activist messages, and, yes, sharing pictures of cats. How can journalists work with memes effectively? What are the dangers endemic to this media form? We’ll hear from a variety of perspectives, including memes in misinformation ecosystems, the visual role of memes, the journalistic value of discussing memes, and how activists wield memes for social change.

The 2013-14 academic year marks the 50th anniversary of the opening of Skillman Library. In the fall of 1963, a state-of-the-art Skillman replaced Van Wickle Library and welcomed Lafayette students with modern conveniences and expanded shelving capacity. Skillman went through a $22 million expansion and renovation in 2004, which added 28,555 square feet and transformed almost every aspect of the interior and exterior.
