New constructions for the wall - Compact St Jude's Dungeness - Wood, nails, 13 years of gloss paint, lichen, stabilizer and varnish

UP 7997 and company are at the end of their journey and are about to take the crossover at St Anthony and then head into their yard at East Minneapolis.

I saw a lineup across the river at Roberts Street and decided to head down to my usual spot for the intercept since it was so beautiful out. Imagine my surprise when a duo of GEs came around the corner instead of a trio of SDs. But, the light was great and the big wings were glowing.

Palindromes (with a side of Jerod)

Happy Palindrome Day - the first since 2002!

11 days♥

Bringing a welcome change from the usual Azuma tide, veteran stalwart 91119, or as I remember it 91019 when it last wore this livery, slows for a signal check at Retford with 1A26. 21.04.24.

Strange to think I remember the loco entering service with Intercity and all being well but somewhat sadly I’ll see it end its service in a few years time too.

Pat's Pretty Pointless Python Program Produces Palindromic Primes....

And here is a version of the source code which generated the image

(with underscores representing the original's indentation):

[

def isPrime(i):

__ if 0 == i % 2: return 2 == i # ..... Evens are non-prime, except '2'

__ if 1 == i: return False # ............ Technically, 1 is not prime

__ for div in xrange(3, int( i**0.5 ) + 1, 2): # ... Check odd divisors up to my sqrt, inc.

____ if 0 == i % div: return False

__ return True

def palindromeEven(s): # ..... Mirror the full input => even-length output

__ return s + s[::-1] # ............ [::-1] means 'scan backwards, in steps of 1'

def palindromeOdd(s): # ...... Mirror the input, except its final character => odd-length output

__ return s + s[:-1][::-1] # ...... [:-1] means 'trim off the final character

def retGenPalints(): # .......... Return a generator of palindromic integers.

__ lo = 1 # ........................... Note: 'yield' returns each element of a re-entrant sequence

__ while True:

____ hi = lo * 10

____ for i in xrange(lo, hi): yield int( palindromeOdd( str(i) )) # ....... odd length

____ for i in xrange(lo, hi): yield int( palindromeEven( str(i) )) # ...... even length

____ lo = hi

def retGenPrimePalints(): # ........... Return a generator of prime palindromic integers.

__ return (n for n in retGenPalints() if isPrime(n)) # .. This is a 'generator expression'

def somePrimePalints(some): # ..... Return a list of 'some' prime palindromic integers.

__ genPrimePalints = retGenPrimePalints()

__ return list( genPrimePalints.next() for i in xrange(some) )

BTW: This approach is reasonably efficient, but certainly not optimal. I have another version, which runs faster, but is harder to understand.

This Friday, at the 11th second and the 11th minute after the 11th hour, the date and time will form a 12-digit palindrome. It will be 11:11:11 on 11/11/11. We have had, since 2000, 10 such sextuplet moments, from one minute past one on 1 January, 2001, to 10:10:10, on 10 October last year. This Friday's alignment, however, is the only one to consist entirely of a single digit, and – assuming we don't suddenly switch to a calendar with 22 months – will be the only moment of its kind for 100 years. For the cynics it's an inevitable and unremarkable coincidence, if not a wilfully manufactured oddity. After all, the date written in full is actually 11/11/2011. Which is considerably less striking. For the superstitious though, it's a moment to be cherished; Indian newspapers have reported a sharp spike in wedding bookings for the day, and film-maker Darren Lynn Bousman has used the date as inspiration for 11/11/11, a horror story about a monster that enters our world at 11:11, through the 11th gate of Heaven. Making a feature film or a life-long commitment to another human being could be called an over-reaction to a long line of ones. Still, we needn't be horseshoe-clutching fortune hunters to at least acknowledge the moment. It shouldn't be hard to keep track of either – 11:11:11 falls just moments after the two minutes' silence remembering the armistice. This year, why not add another 11 seconds of silent contemplation, not, this time, for the war dead, but for this charmingly meaningless quirk of the Gregorian calendar? After all, the odds are that we won't live to see its like again.

Ok so that is definitely a powerdrill the fellow is carrying. In regards to the almost naked geriatric wrestler in the print, I have much less to say. This was taken at the Newspace Print Auction a couple weeks ago. A fairly successful event considering as I was standing in the crowd taking shots, I realized I had stopped right behind Gus Van Sant, who had a print of his own in the auction. Newspace, sadly, is one of the few remaining bastions where it is ok to spend a few rainy (or sunny) hours on a sunday in the dark and leave smelling like fixer. Too few of these places left in Portland, but if you have a hankering to make pictures the old fashioned way, they can certainly see to it that you scratch that itch, and you may even see a geriatric wrestler or two, but no guarantees.

I would like to thank each and every one of you that has stopped by my photostream. With all your support I have now reached a whopping 80,008 views!

Since I managed to catch the view counter at this rather unique number, I decided to grab a screen shot and share with you my love of palindromes and They Might Be Giants.

pal·in·drome (păl'ĭn-drōm') n.

1.) A word, phrase, verse, or sentence that reads the same backward or forward. For example: A man, a plan, a canal, Panama!

2.) A segment of double-stranded DNA in which the nucleotide sequence of one strand reads in reverse order to that of the complementary strand.

[From Greek palindromos, running back again, recurring : palin, again + dromos, a running.]

Of course I have a soft spot for palindromes as my name is featured in one of the cheesiest ones ever. How did Adam introduce himself to Eve?

"Madam in Eden, I'm Adam"

But beyond being some silly linguistic tricks, palidromes are also featured quite heavily in one of my favorite They Might Be Giants songs:

Notes

Dial-a-Song had a substantially different song with the same name. This piece, which had a different melody and was sung by Flansburgh instead of Linnell, goes as follows:

Damn! I found out I had a color space-mismatch when processing my raw images to jpeg and suddenly I understood why everything was quite color- and contrast-less lately.

The earliest attestation of this magic square is a grafitto in the ruins of Pompeii. From its origins as a Roman Pagan charm, it made its way into medieval culture as a magical and protective amulet.

And the project has finally started.

I met Scott at Wolf Productions: A Gallery of the Arts in downtown Claremore during the yearly downtown festival, Dickens on the Boulevard. Scott's wife had been doing pottery and was taking a break while Scott got some things set up for her. It had something to do with sanding down the wooden disks that go between the clay and the wheel.

Scott is from Illinois originally. He and his father, who lives in Florida, create Medieval-style weapons for collectors, fairs, and reenactments. He met his wife at the Renaissance Festival at the Castle in Muskogee. She is from SW OK. The 2 travel all around the country together.

I sure hope my portrait skills get better throughout this project. I was tickled to capture his reflection, but he looks a tad out of focus to me.
