Ruth E. Carter

Costume Designer for “Black Panther”

Tribal traditions across East Africa inspired Ruth E. Carter’s Afrofuturist designs for Ryan Coogler’s 2018 movie “Black Panther.” While the memorable outfit of the Black Panther was originally the vision of Ryan Meinerding, Carter innovated the triangle motif. Angela Bassett’s incredible tribal headdress, worn in your role as Queen Ramonda, was created with the assistance of Julia Körner and produced with a 3D-printer. Nakia, played by Lupita Nyong'o, wears natural accessories such as leaves, shells, and beads, inspired by the Ethiopian Suri. Danal Guira’s character, general Okoye, and her warriors, the Dora Milaje, are styled in a way that reflects Turkana and Maasai culture, with vibrant shades of red and gold, and similar beading.

About Star Wars: The Force Awakens

The May 25, 1977 theatrical debut of Star Wars --- on a scant 32 screens across America -- was destined to change the face of cinema forever. An instant classic and an unparalleled box office success, the rousing "space opera" was equal parts fairy tale, western, 1930s serial and special effects extravaganza, with roots in mythologies from cultures around the world.

From the mind of visionary writer/director George Lucas, the epic space fantasy introduced the mystical Force into the cultural vocabulary and it continues to grow, its lush universe ever-expanding through film, television, publishing, video games and more.

Two and a half hours into what had previously seemed like a fairly quiet Oscars came a WTF moment worthy of endless screengrabs and Twitter debates. Presenter Chris Rock made a joke about actor Jada Pinkett Smith’s look, which prompted Pinkett Smith’s husband, Will Smith, to come onstage and strike the Welcome To Retirement Tar Heels beat Mike Krzyzewski shirt What’s more,I will buy this comedian. He then returned to his seat and appeared to shout: “Keep my wife’s name out of your f*cking mouth.” The incendiary moment between the two performers was bleeped for U.S. audiences, but viewers in Australia caught the interaction between Rock and Smith live: The exchange was so shocking and out of nowhere that many wondered if it was staged, but Smith’s anger seemed deeply genuine and the stars surrounding him—including actor Lupita Nyong’o—appeared extremely uncomfortable. “I did not know this was going to be the most exciting Oscars ever,” said Sean “Diddy” Combs as he came onstage to present shortly thereafter, adding, “Will and Chris, we’re gonna fix this with love.”
