Austerity 0-6-0 saddle tank 'No.44' built by Robert Stephenson and Hawthorns (works No.7104 of 1943) propelling a raft of internal hopper wagons towards Whittle Colliery, Newton-on-the -Moor on 1st September 1971. Delivered new in September 1943 to Bicester as War Department No.75068, it was sold to the Port of London Authority in 1946 and was numbered 'No.83' in their fleet based at Custom House shed. It was subsequently sold to the NCB in October 1960 and was soon fitted with a Giesl ejector. It worked for the rest of its career at Whittle Colliery, where it was scrapped in August 1972.

Hunslet 0-4-0 flameproof mines locomotive (works No.6619 built in 1966) on the 2-ft gauge stockyard surface system at NCB Whittle Colliery, Newton-on-the-Moor, on 1st September 1971. This locomotive is now preserved on the Leighton Buzzard Narrow Light Railway bearing the number '35'. It is a 66DE type with Gardner 4LW 4-cylinder engine, 66HP at 1700rpm. All controls are air operated from twin cabs and it was usually employed underground, being equipped with flame traps and an exhaust 'scrubber'.

No. 38 eases a load from the drift mine at Newton on the Moor over the weigh bridge near the BR exchange sidings at Brotherwick.

The driver of the 1965-registered Hillman Imp reg.no.MMP357C has chased this PW train to an ungated crossing on the 4-mile NCB Whittle colliery branch, and kindly allowed his companian photographer to secure this photograph of Robert Stephenson & Hawthorns 0-6-0 tank '31' (Works No.7609 built in 1950) heading towards the BR exchange sidings on a summer's evening in 1969.
