Shot on February 1, Comet C/2022 E3 (ZTF) will reach its closest point to Earth. It’ll sweep 27 million miles away (that’s 44 million km, or 0.29 AU). At that point, it’ll still be more than 100 times the moon’s distance away.
The last time this comet passed near the sun was 50,000 years ago, when Neanderthals walked the Earth.

A visit to la Roque St Christophe takes you back 50,000 years to the Neanderthals when men dwelled in cave shelters high in the limestone cliffs. Later during medieval times it was turned into a troglodyte town and fort. The caves were occupied by Cro Magnon man and remained occupied until as late as the Renaissance period. The site is a short drive from the UNESCO Lascaux cave paintings (17000 BC) which were discovered accidentally by teenagers in 1940 and continue to lure tourists to the area.

This fungus is growing at about eye level and is very big. Judging by the fissures, spider webs, moss and other fungus growing on top, it must be quite old.

Down in the "boat house".
Ropes come in many sizes, lengths and materials.
The use of ropes for hunting, pulling, fastening, attaching, carrying, lifting, and climbing dates back to prehistoric times. It is likely that the earliest "ropes" were naturally occurring lengths of plant fibre, such as vines, followed soon by the first attempts at twisting and braiding these strands together to form the first proper ropes in the modern sense of the word. The earliest evidence of suspected rope is a very small fragment of three-ply cord from a Neanderthal site dated 50,000 years ago

Sometimes, I feel like people don't really take photographs of cats seriously but I delight in each one. Cats have a very special meaning for me because I grew up with them and, as I am an only child, they always kept me from being lonely.
When I reached 13, cats were the main reason I went vegetarian. I felt like it was wrong to discriminate in any way against human beings so why should it be any different with animals? I looked at my cats, who I loved dearly and couldn't imagine anyone hurting so why would I cause pain and suffering to a cow? a lamb? a pig?
Perhaps as neanderthals, we had this instinct to kill for food. Otherwise, I can't understand how anyone would look at an animal in its glorious innocent state and say, "Yeah, I'm going to put that in my mouth!" But now that we don't need to kill to survive, it behooves us to be kinder and it's also way more sound environmentally. Methane gas in particular is a major contributor to global warming. We should be spending the land used for grazing animals on planting.
