Después de la Catedral de Bayona, es el edificio gótico más importante del País Vasco-Francés.
La iglesia, antiguamente Notre-Dame du Bout du Pont es actualmente la Iglesia de la Asunción de la Virgen.
La tradición atribuye su construcción al rey de Navarra,
Sancho El Fuerte, en conmemoración de la victoria sobre
los moros, en Las Navas de Tolosa en 1212.
Las primeras bases de piedras, grabadas con marcas
discretas dejadas por los canteros, podrían remontarnos a
aquella iglesia primitiva a principios del siglo XIII.
La majestuosa fachada de piedra rosa, está decorada con
un pórtico gótico de columnitas y capiteles tallados.
El interior, con una amplia nave, dos lados y dos plantas de
tribunas edificadas en el siglo XIX. presenta un conjunto de
pilares y columnas.
Por ambos lados del coro poligonal, dos triángulos
curvilíneos recibieron vidrieras representando
los escudos de la ciudad y el de Navarra.
Un órgano, Cavaillé Coll, recién restaurado, acompaña
los actos religiosos.
La casa contigua albergó antaño el hospital para peregrinos de Sainte-Marie.
Junto al templo se sitúa la puerta de Notre-Dame, por la que los romeros se adentran en el Vieux Pont, el antiguo puente que atraviesa el Nive y desde el que se tiene una bella vista de las casas contiguas bañadas por este río.
