A dramatic view over the fjord and the sharp peaks of Lofoten, Norway. Standing here, surrounded by wind, water, and towering mountains, it’s impossible not to feel the raw power of nature. A moment of awe and silence before the storm rolls in.
From the hikers and photographers I’ve spoken to over the last five years or so that I’ve been practising landscape photography, there’s always an agreement that the outer reaches of Upper Derwent Valley have “something” about them. A symptom of their remoteness that’s a little intangible.
Crow Stones is a place that seems to exemplify this “something”, especially if approaching from the south. The relatively narrow valley within which the Ladybower, Derwent and Howden reservoirs sit amplifies the feeling of removal as you traverse north, further and further away from the last point of civilisation so-to-speak, at Fairholmes. After passing Slippery Stones and heading up Bullhead Clough you can truly feel isolated and in a more literal sense one is, as few walkers are to be found up here.
I’d only been here once before this trip, back in the August of 2023. The first time around I let the novelty of a brand new location overwhelm me a little and I came away with a half dozen compositions, all from completely different angles that were okay...but not complete or refined in any way. With this in mind, I identified one aspect, shape or “thing” that appealed to me and focused on just that until I was happy. I defaulted to my wide to begin with, this certainly brought out the texture in the gritstone and allowed me to feature the almost pillow-like shapes in the foreground, but somewhat diminished the Rocking Stone in the frame. Getting back and compressing the scene at around 40mm ticked a whole bunch of boxes; proportion of the elements, a nice pattern of three in the foreground, a strong leading line to bring the eye back into frame to name a few.
My tripod didn’t move for the duration of my shoot and I didn’t even entertain the idea of moving around to find a new composition, showing much more discipline than the previous trip! In the end I came back with three main versions as the light went through it’s different stages; from golden hour, to sunset, to blue hour. This blue hour rendition appealed to me the most, the whole scene being in shadow softened the textures of the gritstone and brought a uniformity to the colour palette. More than anything it best captures how the experience felt to me, in that weird way that feeling can come through in a photograph, if only for the photographer themselves.

It's around this time of year when I start delving into my ever growing collection of unprocessed images from shoots weeks and months ago. Here's one such taken back in mid March when much of Britain was experiencing varying degrees of The Beast from the East! This shot shows the vast and largely unspoilt (unless you count the road and ski centre) wilderness of the GlenCoe and Rannoch Moor region as the sun gradually dipped for the evening, just kissing the tops of the highest mountains. Several vertical framed shots stitched and processed in Lightroom. #fuji #fujifilm_uk #fujifilm #fujilove #fujifilm_xseries #scenicbritain #explore_britain #landscapes_of_Britain #ukscenery #moodylandscapes #dramaticlandscapes #mountainlandscapes #photosoftheuk #ig_britishisles #landscape_photography #landscapephotomag #photooftheday #picoftheday #igdaily #instadaily #discoverlandscape #scotland #instascotland #insta_scotland #lovescotland #scotspirit #scotland_greatshots #mountains #panorama #pano

A mesmerizing dance between light and shadow as the setting sun filters through the delicate branches of leafless trees. The intricate web of silhouettes contrasts beautifully with the warm, glowing hues of the golden hour. A quiet moment where nature whispers its timeless beauty.
Missing are the upper stones, referred to as the capstones or topstones, "buck and doe," or "cock and hen." Usually, different craftsmen have their own individual ways of topping a wall; it's very much a matter of personal style and preference.
Trev came to the conclusion that someone had stolen them, as they were not in need of replacing and they were definitely in place a few days previous to this shot being taken!
I took a friend up onto Kinder Scout for the first time today, ascending with a scramble up Crowden Clough onto the plateau, across to Swines Back through the Wool Packs and down Jacobs Ladder.
The weather was very much the same as Tuesday, if not a little clearer. My friend concurred that the low cloud base and murk added to otherworldly feeling of the wind weathered landscape.
I took the liberty of holding up our hike and catch-up to snap this photograph, the light permeating under the cloud base and silhouettes of Swines Back and South Head looking too good to miss.
I took a little while to find my foreground, but I finally settled on this moss-covered boulder that almost reflected the profile of the peaks on the horizon. This perhaps didn't come through so clearly in the final photo, I think it just about holds it together though.
First hike of the year, at last and is probably already contender to hold the title of most intense conditions to shoot 2023.
I've seen Ladybower with quite the mood on before, but in a very textural deep greys and dramatic clouds way. This is more the kind of shot I'd hope to get in autumn, but that didn't quite work out for me and it's definitely the atmosphere I've been chasing here or a wee while.
The cloud base was low and as serene as the photograph looks, the wind was absolutely howling at gale force, which led to me camping out on this spot for a good amount of time until I got the right density of fog/cloud. I love photography like this, when you have to capture a fleeting moment to get the magic that you're after and after today I can tell you; I am crap at estimating the two second delay for my shutter.
Not sure if anything is gonna match this for me any time soon...
This is a companion shot to "only one car....." one photo is looking in one direction and this the other.
Phenomenal place, a hidden gem.
A convergence I only happened to notice because I nearly tripped over an untied bootlace, I sat down to sort myself out and just glanced across to my left and there it was.
I think of the Zen concept of 無心 (mu shin) when photographs such as these present themselves, I'm sure every artists has come up against times when overthinking gets in the way of creativity. Translated as "no mindedness" 無心 is the state of clearing one's mind from any analytical thought, allowing yourself to react with no pre-judgment in a natural, immediate way.
My favourite definition comes from Alan Watts, who pointed out that Western slang provides some great possibilities for the translation of these Zen terms saying in essence mu shin is to "get with it" or "flow with it".

Like the diverse and beautiful nature, the lifestyle and culture of the tribals are very beautiful and diverse.
Their language, customs, costumes and festivals are diverse.Adivasi's own traditions and culture are symbols of tribal identity and independence. These traditions, customs, language and culture of the tribals are the precious jewels and resources of this country's cultural heritage.
Beautiful morning light streaming through the glen at Loch Beinn a Mheadhain in Glen Affric in the Scottish Highlands.
The way the light hit the trees on the shoreline of the loch reminded me of a beam from a torch, and so came about the title I gave to the image. An absolutely stunning location and conditions - ever changing; can't wait to return...

We stopped on our way back from Glencoe and the Highland road trip we did that day. The meadow leading to Loch Awe was more than just boggy and I tried my best to hop from grassy patch to another. At one point my feet slipped out from under me and I landed in a puddle...oh the things we do to get the photo we want... btw. my wife saw all of this ridiculousness from the comfort of our car and was well entertained :-)

Clouds gather like dark sails over the Ring of Kerry, and the sea turns to pewter where bands of light slip through and paint the coves; headlands layer into soft silhouettes, islands rise like resting whales, and the evening feels hushed and tidal, the road and the water both unspooling toward a quiet horizon.
