The sun sinks low over still waters, painting the sky in soft silver and gold. A silhouette waits on the pier while swimmers cut through quiet reflections, their presence small against the vastness of evening. This is a moment where time slows, where light and shadow cradle the last warmth of the day.

Cave Dale Hike Conclusion:

My lack of time management came to bite me a little, after fixating on a rainbow across the Great Ridge and Castleton (that ultimately had no strong composition to work with) I missed the amazing orange side light that illuminated the north side of the ridge.

In a valiant effort I jogged from Mam Tor to Back Tor but arrived at my spot literally two or three minutes late, leaving me with a colourful sky but no interesting light falling on the landscape. I took a few exposures, but I had nothing I felt like I wanted to edit and present, I stuck around anyway to see if the sky would deliver something to make the endeavour worth it (more pointless fixating). It didn't.

Now well after sunset, I made my way down Back Tor. As I did so I spotted a rain storm on the other side of the valley emerging from the darkness and heading straight for me. The sensible part of any normal person would tell them to get off the ridge as quickly as possible. I don't possess such attributes so I planted my tripod down and set up this very foreboding shot of Back Tor silhouetted against the last remaining bits of light in the clouds. I took an absolute battering from the wind and rain whilst taking this, one of those situations that makes you acutely aware of your place within the environment.

After I shot this came the quickest packing away of gear I've ever done and a swift descent in the headwind down to Edale, a great finish to the day's hike.

Postscript:

I should probably iterate that I always take a full emergency kit including; clothing, shelter, first aid kit, means of making fire, spare torches, power bank etc, etc. I also possess good navigational skills and hike the area frequently, as much as I joke I posses no sensibility for the sake of dramatic story-telling; I would never take risks with the conditions or have stayed up here to take this photograph if I didn't feel I had the necessary skills to be there doing so from a hiking/mountaineering point of view.

Neidpath Castle dates back to the late 1300s and has seen its fair share of turmoil and romance. Once visited by Mary, Queen of Scots, and later a retreat for the poet William Wordsworth, the castle sits just west of Peebles overlooking the River Tweed. It’s privately owned now, but still a compelling part of the Borders landscape: a fortress of both history and melancholy.

Photographed by Duncan Rawlinson in the Thousand Islands of Ontario, Canada, this scene occurs for barely an hour each year. A single red maple reaches peak color just as morning fog drifts in from the river’s head, wrapping the island in soft haze. The alignment of foliage, light, and mist is so brief and specific, it’s a moment few ever see—let alone capture.
