This image was created by Duncan Rawlinson at a well-known desert location—only he turned away from the usual view. While most photographers faced the iconic scene, this moment unfolded quietly in the opposite direction: textured sandstone under gathering clouds, a single weathered tree, and the warm glow of dusk slipping beneath a dramatic sky. It's a reminder to pause, slow down, and always look behind you. Sometimes, the strongest photographs are found when you least expect them—just out of frame.
This was taken just as I stepped out of the car. I have heard it called "the safety shot" in case there was nothing left by the time I got properly set up.
The processing was done in Topaz labs mostly to darken the sky in Lens effect pro, I had no filter on yet. Also warm filter applied to warm it up a bit.
I ventured to Sylvan Lake at sunrise only to be greeted by an unexpectedly moody morning. Thirty minutes later, at Stockade Lake, it was sunny! But I enjoyed the drama, with gloomy clouds lurking over the rocky landscape across the water, and mist over the lake...
📍 Haukadalur – where the earth breathes steam and the sun breaks through the clear sky like a spotlight on a stage ☀️️
in the fields near felanitx, a small town tucked in the southeast of mallorca, the sun dips below the horizon, casting a final burst of warm colors into the sky. the dark clouds seem to part, revealing a glowing orange core that stretches across the landscape, painting the earth with its fading light. in that moment, the quiet majesty of nature takes over, a fleeting reminder of the beauty that closes each day on this island.
Sometimes you should just go find out. Rarely do I ever stick to a route as planned, it's nice to have a general direction but often times I'll see a path leading somewhere or a feature on the map and say to myself "I wonder what's down there".
I've been looking at Crowden Tower in this way on the map for some time and I finally went to find out what was there. There's a lovely path not marked at all on any maps) that winds its way along the col, which on a clear day would have great views of Grindslow Knoll but the cloud base was around 500-600m obscuring most of the view. One of the things that I did find was the remains of an old sheepfold and a view up to the Woolpacks, with dry stone providing a lovely bit of foreground interest and the cloud a good deal of atmosphere.
A lone tree stands at the edge of a frozen pond, perfectly mirrored in the glassy water below. Gentle hues of lavender, pink, and gold wash across the snowy landscape as the first light of sunrise breaks through the horizon. This quiet winter scene captures the serenity of nature in stillness — a moment suspended between night and day, shadow and glow.
Kinder Scout Hike Pt.2:
I passed a few scenes I'd shot before and was very tempted to re-shoot them with a new season and different conditions. I wanted to press on however and I was excited to see what views would unfold.
On the Pennine Way, I moved carefully along the boulder carpeted trail taking in all of the shapes and details looking for that magic combination that just "worked" for me.
About a quarter of a mile north of the Kinder Low trig point I found what I was looking for; the thin, defined diagonal layers of the gritstone combined with the softer less obvious but still present diagonals of edge of the plateau towards Sandy Heys tied the subject and background nicely together for me.
The other magic element (the light) was a little subtler, the clouds were thin enough in places to allow some highlights on the landscape but diffuse enough to have well balanced natural contrast. Speaking of magic, this location is perfectly aligned to catch some fantastic light at sunset and this list is very high on my list to shoot of an evening.
ฟ้ามืด งดงาม ️
Les nuages lourds s’ouvrent sur des reflets dorés dans l’eau. Une atmosphère puissante où lumière et ombre dialoguent, offrant un contraste saisissant aux amateurs de paysages dramatiques.
Heavy clouds open onto golden reflections in the water. A powerful atmosphere where light and shadow converse, offering a striking contrast for lovers of dramatic landscapes.
📍 Kirkjufell – an iconic mountain, this time surrounded by low-hanging clouds and a flowing stream, reminding us that every detail of this island is worth noticing ️
Today was a day of hide and seek; geological features loomed out of the fog like spectres, disappearing as soon the camera was trained on them, just the like the real thing....
Crowden Tower is the ghostly entity in this photograph, a col on the southern edge of Kinder Scout that stands watch at the top of Crowden Clough (one of my favourite scrambles in the Peak).
I'm lucky to have experienced at least three days like this up on Kinder and it's an atmosphere unlike any other, perhaps knowing how vast and mysterious the plateau can be on an ordinary day makes these conditions even more special?
Capturing the interplay of morning mist and autumn colors, I waited for the moment when sunlight painted the landscape in golden hues. The rising vapor adds a dynamic element to the scene, while the seasonal colors create a natural palette of warmth against the cool morning air.
The vastness and diversity of the Kinder Scout massif could provide a lifetime's exploration and I always look forward to seeing new perspectives on a place that has become very familiar to me.
I took what was a initially a slightly aimless stroll up Grindsbrook Clough but soon found something that took my focus, an outcropping of gritstone halfway up northern wall of the valley. The ascent up was taxing both physically and mentally, requiring some careful thought and physical dexterity to negotiate a safe route up.
I felt very much that I was in a spot that not many think go to, which provided some angles of the area that I've not seen before. The photographs I took are definitely what I would class as record-shots, the best probably to be seen during the heather bloom for the compositions I found.

This sunrise was especially surreal. The pinks and purples felt beyond their normal vibrancy. Then the clouds began forming into an array of abstract shapes. These three were perfectly positioned, and separated. I’m still guilty of sleeping through sunrises, this serves as a reminder to get up even when it looks average.
A quiet winter scene near Golden Ponds in Longmont, Colorado. The waterfall flows steadily behind a tree holding onto the last of its autumn seed pods. Muted tones set the mood, with nature paused in seasonal transition.
Clophill is a linear village with its High Street of three quarters of a mile lying between the River Flit valley to the south and the Greensand Ridge to the north. There is a secondary residential area mostly along Back Street. The village has developed by infill, but it used to be much more open with fields between the High Street and Back Street.
Clophill has a long history. There is evidence for a Roman road running east-west through the village. In the Domesday book of 1086, the village is called Clopelle, which means “tree-stump hill”. Near Top Farm at Beadlow, is the site of the Benedictine Priory of Beaulieu which was founded between 1140 and 1146 by Robert D'Albini. At Cainhoe Castle is the remains of a motte and bailey castle dating from the Norman Conquest.
Olde St Mary's Church was abandon when, St Mary's Church on the High Street, was built in a convincing Gothic style between 1848 and 1849, when the old church on the hill was too small to house the congregation.
