The sun sets in the middle of nowhere in the Mojave Desert.
During a scouting run to Mojave Desert, I found this spot just past the highway leading to Calico Ghost town.

This shot was taken around sunset in Mojave National Preserve near the Teutonia Peak Trail. This trail passes through an area with the highest density of Joshua Trees anywhere in the world. I used HDR to help balance the light between the foreground and sky. HSS

mojave desert, 2015
And thou shalt give me health, life and old age,
a long reign, strength to all my limbs; sight to my
eyes, hearing to my ears and pleasure to my heart
daily. And thou shalt give me to eat until I am full,
and thou shalt give me to drink unto drunkenness,
and thou shalt promote my seed to be kings in
this country to eternity. And thou shalt make me
content every day, thou shalt listen to my voice in
whatever I shall say to thee and grant me very
high Nile floods to furnish thy offerings and to
furnish the offerings of the gods and goddesses.
Thou shalt preserve all the people of thy land,
their cattle and their trees, which thy hand has
made. For it is thou who hast made them all,
thou canst not abandon them to pursue another
design with them, for that would not be right.
-- prayer to the god Osiris from Pharaoh Ramses IV,
circa 1150 BC.
A pair of road units sit at the south end of the yard in Mojave. This yard fields several local freights to the nearby cement and mineral loaders, but these heavy trains have rated modern road power for most of their existence.
This was taken from the top of Dante's View in the Amargosa Range looking almost due west across Death Valley to Telescope Peak, the highest point in the Panamint Range at over 11,000 feet.
Death Valley is 282 feet below sea level. It holds the world record for hottest recorded temperature at 134 degrees at Greenland Ranch in 1913. It is also the lowest point in the Western Hemisphere located on dry land.
Death Valley proper is essentially a relatively narrow north-south oriented valley formed by the Panamint Range to the west and the Amargosa Range to the east and is open at both ends, north and south as both defining ranges lose elevation at the extreme ends.

Mojave hole in the sand plant
This plant gets its name from the slight depression in the sand that the stem grows in
An eastbound BNSF manifest freight passes under the signal bridge just west of Mojave, California, at the foot of Tehachapi Pass on March 14, 2005. Brand-new BNSF ES44DC No. 7658 is one of a handful of GEVOs that were painted in “Heritage II” colors.
Early in the morning of March 9, 1995, a westbound Santa Fe stack train speeds across the Mojave Desert at Lavic, California.
California desert springtime, Mohave Desert style, a roadside view along highway 178 near where the Pacific Crest Trail crosses the highway.
I got the heads up that 1943 ‘The Spirit of Union Pacific’ would be on the point of UP’s daily Lathrop-bound intermodal out of Los Angeles. Due to prior commitments, I made it trackside just in time to see it roll by me, so without a second thought, I gave chase. I was confident that somewhere along the line I would get good sunlight on it, but 100 miles later Mother Nature made sure there’d be no chance of that with high clouds coming into the picture just as the line turned west. Although I was a bit disappointment, I was glad I was able to get out on the road and railfan, even if it was only for 3 hours.
UP 1943 strains against grade as it climbs out of the Mojave Sink and toward Tehachapi summit only a few miles away.
