In the spring of 2006 I spent a few weeks travelling around Sicily. Similar in appearance to the rest of Italy, yet mindfully different in many ways, the island of Sicily can at times feel worlds away from it's parent nation. Present are the Moorish influences of Northern Africa, and of the ancient Greeks whose empire once dominated the scope of the Meditteranean.

In 1693 a devastating earthquake brought down much of Eastern Sicily. Over 45 towns were destroyed and over 60,000 lives were lost. Nearly two thirds of the population of Catania alone lost their lives. Many of these cities were rebuilt in the ornamental Baroque style which is occassionally refered to as "Earthquake Baroque".

Things move at a snails pace in Sicily. No one does anything fast and strikes are commonplace making getting around challenging at times. It should all be taken in stride as Sicily is here to show us her wonder, teach us her patience, and remind us that a good simple life not need be hectic.
