As I am trying to limit the number of credit and payment cards I am carrying in my wallet, I decided to experiment with my San Francisco MUNI card. What would happen if I were to tape the RFID chip on the back of my Palm Pre --would I still be able to pay when I get on the bus?

 

First, I cut the chip off the Translink card (now called Clipper). Then I taped it on the back of my Palm Pré while still allowing the back to close properly. Then I got on the bus.

MasterCard announced MasterPass, a digital service that allows consumers to use any payment card or enabled device to discover enhanced shopping experiences that are as simple as a click, tap or touch – online, in-store or anywhere.

Heard about these a while back. Even available as a mobile payment, hoo hoo, take that Pound Sterling. Hard to find though - crawled through Brixton on a Monday at 4.30pm trying to get one with Janis F, impossible! No one had them (including an incense shop, the owner said "I haven't seen one in a while", and a cafe who didn't have any in stock).

Some 40% of small and medium-sized businesses are now using mobile point-of-sale systems that use a card reader attached to a tablet or smartphone to accept customer payments.

At a store, consumers can simply pay by just holding their iPhone near a contactless reader with their finger on Touch ID or enter a passcode and their transaction will be authenticated in seconds. For purchases within a merchant app, consumers will simply touch to pay and authenticate with Touch ID or passcode for a quick and seamless shopping experience.

MasterCard’s third annual Mobile Payments Study, in partnership with PRIME Research, tracked 19.1 million social media posts across Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Forums, Weibo (CN), Google+ and YouTube throughout 2014. The study uncovered that conversations have shifted away from security concerns and toward enriched experiences delivered through mobile payments, such as convenience, loyalty and rewards.
