The Esque Collection

8 January - 10th February 2019

'The Esque Collection' is based on Chinoiserie - a decorative style in Western arts and crafts, characterized by the use of Chinese motifs and used in pre-19th century ceramics, porcelain and furniture. Thinking about what Chinoiserie might mean today, Laura White explores the way manufactured objects are conceived and traded globally.

Historically defined as something that was made in the West and yet represented China, the field of Chinoiserie was always rife with cultural misunderstanding and misrepresentation. Today, a multitude of objects flood the global material world: replica plastic 'Chinese' tea sets are sold in Turkish shops in East London miniature replica Gucci handbags appear in Shenzen's traditional market...

Combining a riot of ready-made objects, from household ornaments to cheap plastic imports, Laura White's ornamental compositions are individually displayed on their own plinth, but form a coherent collection. Their identities are in crisis, but each is bound by a collective formal logic and configuration.

Displayed in the Dean's Chapel in Worcester Cathedral 'The Esque Collection' opens up new dialogues: the multi-coloured low-fi sculptures, offset against a background of sophisticated stained glass windows and ecclesiastical architecture, raise the issue of value. The work also questions the reliability of the culture and materials behind everyday objects.

On the last Friday of each month the Edinburgh Bookshop in Bruntsfield holds a Speakeasy night, with an author talk but also serving up gin and tonics and letting readers and writers socialise.

The March event this evening saw Simon Beattie giving a talk about Friedo Lampe's At the Edge of Night, which he translated, then doing a reading from the book. Lampe was a writer, librarian and publisher in Germany, he was also disabled and gay. He survived the evils of the Nazi regime (although his home was bombed and his precious lifetime book collection destroyed), only to be shot in a tragic misunderstanding by Soviet soldiers as the war was ending.

We were also treated to music and poetry from the fabulous Macsonnetries, with flautist Graham Dickson and poet Petra Reid. Graham started by playing some beautiful pieces by Bach, which feature in Lampe's novel, then he and Petra performed music and poetry together.

At one point a woman walked past outside the window, and her wee girl, maybe about eight years old, just stopped, her face lit up, utterly entranced by stumbling across this music, it was gorgeous to see her experiencing a little moment of unexpected magic. Terrific evening.

Nakhon Pathom is a small province located just 56 Km's. from Bangkok. The province features an ancient religious structure called Phra Pathom Chedi, the first religious landmark that signified the influx of Buddhism into Thailand. Nakhon Pathom is also renowned for its abundant fruits varieties and famous dishes. Phra Pathommachedi or Phra Pathom Chedi is a Stupa in Nakhon Pathom, Thailand. At 120.5 metres ( 395 ft ) it is the second tallest stupa in the world after Jetavanaramaya in Sri Lanka. The Stupa is located in the Wat Phra Pathommachedi Ratcha Wora Maha Wihan a temple in the town centre of Nakhon Pathom, Thailand.

The name Phra Pathommachedi means the first holy stupa, given by king Mongkut. Originally the Stupa named Phra Thom Chedi means the big stupa in ancient Khmer language or the royal stupa in Northern Thai language. One of the common misunderstandings about this stupa is that Phra Pathommachedi is the oldest and the first stupa in Suvarnabhumi, an ancient name of Southeast Asia. Modern Historians believe that the stupa was one of the principal stupas of ancient Nakhon Pathom, the largest settlement of Dvaravati culture in Nakhon Pathom area together with the nearby Phra Prathon Chedi during the 6th to the 8th centuries.

Nakhon Pathom was situated by the sea, the city prospered during the Dvaravati civilisation. According to archaeological findings, Nakhon Pathom was the first city to possess influences of Buddhism and Indian civilisations. From the Phra Pathom Chedi and other remains discovered in the city area, it is believed that the city was a centre of civilisation in that era. People of different races settled in Nakhon Pathom. However, a change in the course of the river caused a draught that forced the people to migrate and settle on the banks of river, and these communities developed into towns. The new town was called Nakhon Chaisi or Sirichai, leaving Nakhon Pathom deserted for hundreds of years until the reign of King Rama IV. While His Majesty was in monk hood, he travelled to Nakhon Pathom and found the Phra Pathom Chedi that he regarded as the largest pagoda of all.

When King Rama IV ascended to the throne, he commanded that a bell shaped Chedi be built to cover the former Chedi. The surrounding area was also renovated and improved. He also commanded that a water canal be dug to ease commuting, which was called Chedi Bucha canal. During the reign of King Rama V, the construction of railways to the south began, at that time Nakhon Pathom was still a heavily forested area. King Rama V also commanded that the town be relocated from Tambon Thana, Amphoe Nakhon Chaisi, to the Phra Pathom Chedi area as it used to be. Nakhon Pathom has been there ever since. During the reign of King Rama VI, a palace was built at Tambon Sanam Chan as a temporary residence on his travels and many roads were constructed. A large bridge was also built over the Chedi Bucha canal, which His Majesty named “Saphan Charoensattha”. Later, he commanded that the name of Nakhon Chaisi be changed to Nakhon Pathom, but the name of the prefecture was still called “Nakhon Chaisi” until the reign of King Rama VII when the calling of the prefecture was ended. Nakhon Chaisi is now one of the districts in Nakhon Pathom.

Nakhon Pathom covers an area of 2,168 square kilometres or 542,081.6 acres. It is divided into seven administrative districts or Amphoe, they are: Amphoe Muang Nakhon Pathom, Amphoe Buddhamonthon, Amphoe Sam Phran, Amphoe Nakhon Chaisi, Amphoe Bang Len, Amphoe Kamphaeng Saen, and Amphoe Don Toom. Most of the areas are plains with no mountainous land, plateau are found in the west east of Amphoe Muang and Amphoe Kamphaeng Saen. The plains along the Tha Cheen River (Nakhon Chaisi River) are the location of Amphoe Nakhon Chaisi, Amphoe Sam Phran, and Amphoe Bang Len. These fertile lands provide agricultural area for people, thus most of the residents earn their living from agriculture; plantations, farming, growing food crops, and fruit orchards. Moreover, Nakhon Pathom is well known for pomelo, some call the Nakhon Pathom the sweet pomelo town.

Let me take you down 'cause i'm going to strawberry fields

Nothing is real, and nothing to get hung about

Strawberry fields forever.

Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see

It's getting hard to be someone, but it all works out

It doesn't matter much to me.

Let me take you down 'cause i'm going to strawberry fields

Nothing is real, and nothing to get hung about

Strawberry fields forever.

No one i think is in my tree

I mean, it must be high or low

That is you can't you know, tune in

But it's all right. That is i think it's not too bad.

Let me take you down 'cause i'm going to strawberry fields

Nothing is real, and nothing to get hung about

Strawberry fields forever.

Always no, sometimes think it's me

But you know i know when it's a dream

I think er no, i mean, er yes, but it's all wrong

That is i think i disagree.

Let me take you down 'cause i'm going to strawberry fields

Nothing is real, and nothing to get hung about

Strawberry fields forever.

Strawberry fields forever.

Strawberry fields forever.

Due to a misunderstanding this roll was developed -2 (2 stops underexposure, in other words it was normal develop as if I had shot the film at iso 400), looks decent enough. It just goes to show how forgiving negative film is.

An appeal to our society which is increasingly misunderstanding and ignoring our 3rd agers.

The traditional respect for elders is vanishing; particularly towards those whos body function has deteriorated more and need physical aids. The contemporary public often wrongly judged these elders’ mental abilities based on their physical appearances. We need to understand, that the mental age of our generation’s 3rd ager has gotten much younger, which is reflected through their interests. No longer do they stay home, nor are they lonely without friends; which, is what the majority of us still believe.

3rd agers too, should be allowed to express their interest and lifestyle through their equipments, just as daily clothing is able to. To address these issues, the traditional cage-like zimmer-frame has been re-shaped into a much more organic form, with the preferred series of graphic on the body-frame, and an added function which provides the choice of taking one extra step every time; giving out the illusion they are walking faster.

The portrait depicts Jaime Sabartes (1881-1968) - a Spanish writer and poet, a friend of Picasso, who wrote a book of memoirs about him. The color blue in this work has absolute rights. None of the artist's previous paintings have ever known such an amount of blue, which has here turned into a spiritual substance that subordinates all the details of the picture. By means of blue, Picasso managed to convey the creator's doom of misunderstanding. Sabartes said about the artist: "He always saw deeper than any of us." This work of the artist belongs to the period of Picasso's creativity (1901-1904), which was called "blue".

One of the central works of the blue period is the painting "An Old Jew with a Boy", painted in 1903 in Barcelona. In the work, the main theme of this period sounds again with renewed vigor - two creatures that make up a single whole, immersed in silence, strive to be together. Seated beggars are depicted on a neutral background, embodying the two most defenseless and weak ages - old age and childhood. The painfully fragile blind old man and the boy cuddle together, as if forming one creature. Picasso deliberately stretches the proportions of the figures, especially the figure of an old man, emphasizing his thinness and emaciation. Of particular importance for Picasso was the theme of blindness: an old blind man becomes the embodiment of true spirituality and, at the same time, the moral poverty of the world around him. The sighted boy holds himself like a blind man: his eyes are open, but motionless, the face resembles a mask. The characters in the picture communicate not by looking, but by touching their hands, in the image of which the deformation of the form reaches the limit: the bony hands of the old man seem almost "gothic". For Picasso, the idea of the clairvoyance of blindness, forcing one to perceive the world with the inner gaze, was akin to the idea of love. An old man and a boy who support each other carry this gift of love. For the sake of comprehending the inner idea of the work of Picasso, as it were, breaks through the shell of the visible. Drawing, color, space, that is, purely plastic problems, he solves as human problems. Picasso's drawing takes on a dominant meaning. The power of the line is emphasized by the monochrome picture. Blue is not the real color of the object world. It captures the emotional essence of what is happening, increasing the mood of grief and hopelessness, expressed in sad and concentrated faces. Bluish figures do not merge with the blue background, but, on the contrary, stand out clearly on it due to the clear outline. There is no perspective in the picture, in the image of figures, cut-off and color modeling are minimal, but nevertheless, there is an impression of volume on the plane, which is achieved by an expressive line. The intense expression of this work brings to mind the Spanish painting of the 16th century, especially the works of El Greco and Morales.

In 1564, Spanish explorers led by Miguel López de Legazpi sailed from New Spain (now Mexico), and arrived on the island of Cebu on February 13, 1565, establishing the first Spanish colony in the Philippines. Having heard of the rich resources in Manila from the natives, Legazpi dispatched two of his lieutenant-commanders, Martín de Goiti and Juan de Salcedo to explore the island of Luzon.

The Spaniards arrived on the island of Luzon in 1570. After quarrel and misunderstandings between the Islamic natives and the Spaniards, they fought for the control of the land and settlements. After several months of warfare, the natives were defeated, and the Spaniards made a peace pact with the tribal councils of Rajah Sulaiman III, Rajah Lakandula, and Rajah Matanda who handed over Manila to the Spaniards.

Legazpi declared the area of Manila as the new capital of the Spanish colony on June 24, 1571 because of its strategic location and rich resources. He also proclaimed the sovereignty of the Monarchy of Spain over the all the archipelago. King Philip II of Spain delighted at the new conquest achieved by Legazpi and his men, awarded the city a coat of arms and declaring it as: Ciudad Insigne y Siempre Leal (English: "Distinguished and Ever Loyal City"). Intramuros was settled and became the political, military and religious center of the Spanish Empire in Asia.

The planning for the city was commenced by Governor-General Santiago de Vera, and was approved by King Philip II's Royal Ordinance that was issued in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Spain. The succeeding governor-general, Gómez Pérez Dasmariñas brought with him from Spain the royal instructions to carry into effect the said decree. Construction of the walls began on 1590 and continued under many governor-generals until 1872. Since the construction was carried on during different periods and often far apart, the walls were not built according to any uniform plan.

Gov. Juan de Silva executed certain work on the fortifications in 1609 which was improved by Juan Niño de Tabora in 1626, and by Diego Fajardo Chacón in 1644. The erection of the San Diego Bastion (Baluarte de San Diego) was also completed that year.

I had difficulties to find this hotel in Cergy Pontoise, as my notes were in a disorder. Near a bus stop I asked an elderly lady for directions. I probably mumbled the question into my beard ....

She got upset, as my pronunciation had caused a severe misunderstanding. No, I was not looking for anything connected to gynecology.

A Spanish UN soldier waves to children as he patrols the village of al-Wazzani in south Lebanon 12 November 2006. In the land of Hezbollah, in south Lebanon, the blue helmet Spanish soldiers intend to show they are there to help and dispel misunderstandings.

Life is difficult and complex – full of surprises, sorrows, hopes, misunderstandings, hate and desires. These things leave marks on each and everyone. Some good, some bad. I have never learned how to cry or talk about these bad experiences. My only way to let these Dangerous Bees out of my system is by creating images. I will showcase a compilation of my recent Dangerous Bees series.

Crossing on the RHEIN river dyke. No misunderstandings.

This was taken at the same puppet show in Tehran. The only thing that this father and his son seemed to have in common was that they were not paying attention to the show... I felt that this picture could symbolize the growing misunderstanding between the generations.

What will our children think of us....?

I went to the places that you always go, I rang your house but got no answer, Jumped in my car, I went round there, Still don't believe it.. He was just leaving..

Approximately 16 hours before these two got into a shoving match which Meg would argue was "just a misunderstanding".

Due to a misunderstanding this roll was developed -2 (2 stops underexposure, in other words it was normal develop as if I had shot the film at iso 400), looks decent enough. It just goes to show how forgiving negative film is.

Slussen so is my favourite metro station for photograpy...

Wow, look how many medals Matilda has won! True, they all have Isabel's name engraved on them, but that's just some sort of crazy misunderstanding, I'm sure.

We were trying to find postcards at a mall grocery store in Coban. I guess our Spanish is not so good. The store attendant took us to the back of the store and pointed to the chicken. Si?

Living is easy with eyes closed

Misunderstanding all you see

It's getting hard to be someone

But it all works out

It doesn't matter much to me

Standing there and licking your lips. So much misunderstanding.

with those gentle eyes I had expected

something differently faint

when you reacted to these mindless lies

once again I was surprised

a wake-up call

when will it happen

will it stop the grave misunderstandings

just a slight mistake and everything changes straight away

when your life returns to normal

my estate will take you anywhere

will take you anywhere

will take you anywhere

oh bring me the news

bring me the news

bring me the good old news

when it's over... oh, oh

we'll take the V70 and take a stretch

on the north bound motorway

(on an) impromptu holiday

the silent sings doubt and worries

stress your mind

trajan pro in bold

print and waste your thoughts

but when your life returns to normal

my estate will take you anywhere

will take you anywhere as if you care

when your life finally returns come around

I'm here and I will stay

I'm here and I will wait for you... oh, oh

I am not joking

I wanna help you take off

However, I did attempt to remedy the situation armed with Slot, Phillips and Robertson screwdrivers.

Robertson screws and screwdrivers were invented in Canada in 1908 and the screws have a square recess in their heads. The screwdrivers fit accordingly.

The Creature Walks Among Us, 1956

youtu.be/cfLKIq8XZ0M?t=2s Full Feature

This is the third "Creature" movie. Universal left their options open at the end of second with the exact same ambiguous ending. While sequels to sequels tend to be poor fare, gill-man fans tend to regard Creature Walks Among Us (CWAU) as being as good as the first.

CWAU shares many B-movie weaknesses. It follows formula plot elements that were hallmarks of the first movie, but it also ventures into some new material. This new ground gives CWAU some muscle of its own. The first movie had a tiny bit of science blather about evolution. The second movie didn't bother. The third, however, tried to re-inject some science into the fiction.

Synopsis

A rich scientist mounts an expedition to find the gill-man who has escaped into the Florida swamps. A local fisherman reports being attacked by a man-like "diablo" so they investigate. Using an underwater radar device (not sonar), they track him down to a narrow bayou. Here he attacks their small boat, but is set on fire by spilled gasoline. Badly burned, the gill-man collapses. The scientists take him back aboard their 100' yacht and head for San Francisco. They've bandaged him up (head to toe) and are monitoring his vital signs. During the trip the complex soap opera develops. Dr. Barton (Jeff Morrow) is the rich, but jealous husband. Mrs. Barton (Liegh Snowden) is the blonde babe no longer in love and resentful of her husbands attempts to control her. Dr. Morgan (Rex Reason) is the concerned friend. Jed Grant is the buff playboy helper. Innuendo and misunderstandings keep the pot simmering.

Along the way, the doctors find that gill-man's gills are too badly burned to supply his body with oxygen. An x-ray reveals that he has lungs but that they're collapsed and closed off. They operate to open them. He can breathe air now. They also comment about how the burns have cause the fish-like layer to fall away, and a more human-like layer of skin to develop. Gillman awakens and interrupts Jed forcing himself on Marcia. He then dives into the sea, but must be rescued before he drowns.

Back in San Francisco, Gill is taken to Dr. Barton's estate and put into an electrified pen with some other animals. He looks somewhat longingly to the water's edge, but is docile. When a mountain lion gets into the pen and kills a sheep, Gill kills the big cat. When Dr. Barton pistol-whips Jed and puts the body in Gill's cage (to frame him for the murder), Gill goes nuts, tears up the house looking for Dr. Barton, finally killing him. Gill then wanders off the estate. With everyone in funeral attire, there's a mild suggestion that Dr. Morgan will come to call on the widow Barton when a respectful time has passed. The movie closes with Gill walking down the beach towards the sea. The End.

Once you've gotten into the gill-man saga, the plot of CWAU takes it to a new level which is more thoughtful than simply another monster movie. It's also fun to see the team of Jeff Morrow and Rex Reason again -- two good actors -- who starred in This Island Earth ('54).

The original movie had two gill-man suits -- a smaller one for the underwater shots, and a larger one for the above-water shots. The second movie, Revenge, made two new gill-man suits along the same lines. For the third movie, they didn't put too much into a new gill-man suit. They created a new gill-man head and hands, but dressed him the crude sailcloth shirt and pants so as to not have to make more. For the pre-changed gill-man, they used footage from the first two movies. The only scenes which needed a new gill-man suit was where he attacked the small boat and was burned. These scenes are so quick and dark, that the lower quality Gill-Man III is not apparent.

Arthur Ross, who co-wrote the original opted for a more thoughtful script. Are we what we are because of our genes, or because of our environment? Dr. Barton is excited that the gill-man is becoming more human. The fire burned away his "old self", releasing the new. "Change the metabolism and man will change." Dr. Morgan disagrees. Science can't create a new species. They may have altered gillman's skin, but inside he's the same. As though mankind would not be fit for space travel until he evolved into something better. This is a natural sort of thought for scientism which denies there being any divine element to man. How else to define man? Our human physiology is all we have. This is reminiscent of the premise underlying The Island of Dr. Moreau. Give animals human shape, human features, and they'll become people.

The Nurture part comes where the scientists theorize that the Gill-man as a "new" man will behave good or bad, depending on how he's treated. The assumption of the Tabula Rasa.

A notion floated in the dialogue is that ordinary humans are "built" for the earth and not suitable to space. The scientists pontificate about how the aquatic gill-man was "built" for life in the water. Man, therefore, was "built" for terrestrial life. That build would not work in space, they say. "We all stand at a crossroads between the jungle and the stars." If gill-man could become a new creature, maybe man could too. Since the changed gill-man could not really become human, the inference is that man can't become this Nietzchean over-man either.

Some aspects of CWAU have spiritual parallels. The before-creature is the old "animal" nature -- rash, violent, lustful. The after-creature is the new "human" self. He's no longer lustful or rash. He's violent only as defense. At the end, he's violent but driven by a sense of justice. There's also a parallel to the biblical "fall of man" described in the Book of Genesis, in that the before creature was innocent. He needed no clothes. After the change, he needed clothing. There's also a parallel to New Testament verses which talk of the old man having to die (metaphorically) before the new man could emerge. This adds some twist to the movie's title. Our own struggles with our animal side with our divine. Dr. Barton and Jed Grant are examples of those who gives in to their animal side. Dr. Morgan and even Marcia Barton are examples of people who maintained morality.

Old Home -- Dr. Barton's estate was one of Universal's stock houses. Used in many movies, such as Tarantula

Bottom line? CWAU will appeal to gill-man fans. Since it's not simply a re-remake of the first two "Creature" films, it has some appeal to others too. It's a bit lighter on the action but more cerebral. It's worth a watch.

Better than REVENGE, but nowhere near the glorious heights of the first film (which is really the only CREATURE that you absolutely must see).

It's interesting to see how people outside China think of the country. Comments on news site like WSJ or NY Times reflect a considerable amount of misunderstanding and prejudice.

Mrs. Tully (Lorraine Freund) and Jane Ryan (Mary May Johnson) are afraid that Bartley Fallon (Charles Riffenberg) might murder them next. (Ah, it's all a hilarious misunderstanding!)
