The brand new Crisp 125 scooter is up for a review in the next issue of Scoot Mag and we needed some photos of one of our guys shreding it. Thats why I headed out to meet up with Gus Haywood at the infamous M32 home made park in Bristol. Had a awesome shoot, getting some really great shots but I personally love this one of him manualing down this angled manny pad.

The middle page of my Nikon D850 user manual. Which I have never read. Which means, I am using only the bare minimum of fabulousness which is my camera. This challenge reminded me I need to change my focus point to the middle…. You would think that would be info at my fingertips in one of these 374 pages, but it is not., I even downloaded a Kindle manual for the D850 and it turned out to b the first one star rating I had ever given. Aargh.

Shot this image with a tripod for 1 sec shutter/f8 (using a push button manual shutter release), it's home processed Kodak Tri-X 400 film using stock XTOL dev (5 minutes at 25C minimal inversions). Very please with this old camera's sharpness (of course what would I expect, it's a Zeiss)!

Yesterday his new book MANUAL came out. He came to Cologne for this event and signed the bookes for his fans. A book with a very personal, but even political POV.

Se il Regno d’Italia non fu prodigo con l’Umbria, la Repubblica fu addirittura perfida matrigna. Al primo tentativo di dare un minimo di equilibrio alle due Italie – la prospera e la depressa – all’Umbria capitò la peggiore delle iatture, quella di essere sopravvalutata. Fu estromessa dalla Cassa del Mezzogiorno, che accolse tra le sue generose braccia l’Abruzzo e il Lazio (quest’ultimo segnatamente alle province di Latina e Frosinone, oltre alle isole d’Elba, del Giglio, Capraia, i comuni dell’ex circondario di Cittaducale e quelli del comprensorio del Tronto). Fu così che i sussidi s’arrestarono alla periferia della conca ternana, considerata – oggi ci viene da ridere – ricca di per sé, poiché particolarmente industrializzata. Ahinoi. Ci manca una linea ferroviaria efficiente a partire dagli inizi del secolo scorso, quando le ferrovie rappresentavano per le popolazioni ciò che i fiumi avevano rappresentato nell’antichità. Fu proprio il treno il motivo principale per cui la valle dell’Arno ebbe un più rigoglioso sviluppo rispetto alla parallela valle del Tevere. L’Autostrada del Sole ci lambì appena e il parco aeroplanini dell’aeroporto di Sant’Egidio, nonostante gli apprezzabili sforzi, tarda ancora a decollare. Vero, ma a che serve continuare a piangerci addosso a causa dell’isolamento? È una scusante che non regge più in questa valle di conventi, dove la politica ristagna e le cricche intellettuali dedite alla vita contemplativa ammuffiscono. L’isolamento da cui l’Umbria fatica ad uscire è di matrice politico, sociale e culturale. Non è solo colpa della mancanza di collegamenti e di finanziamenti. Le sue città per evitare il declino dovranno ritrovare lo slancio giovane di chi le vive, ma anche degli attori sociali. Che si esprimano sull’argomento le due cattedre assai titolate a parlare, quella universitaria e quella ecclesiastica. Solo con l’apporto di tutti potremo giocarci le nostre carte. Ad esempio, la storia dell’arte. Questa disciplina in Umbria è scientemente maltrattata da decenni di sfruttamento dei luoghi, da scelte sbagliate, dagli affarismi, che hanno ridotto questo settore strategico all’afasia. Basta e avanza per valutare la capacità critica dell’establishment dell’urbanistica, dell’innovazione tecnologica e della pianificazione del territorio. La capitale europea della cultura per il 2014 è Umeå, città svedese di 117.000 abitanti, capoluogo della contea di Västerbotten, undicesima città della Svezia. Domandiamoci come una città fondata sul finire dell’Ottocento - senza (all’epoca) un solo museo, senza una chiesa, né un palazzo più antico di 120 anni - sia arrivata a tanto. Le risposte sono: high tech, servizi sociali, università giovane e multietnica (comprendente 50 nazionalità), massima attenzione all’ambiente e progettualità in continua evoluzione. Le nostre città vanno completamente ripensate: da luoghi deputati a produrre reddito privato a luoghi votati al reddito culturale collettivo. Se il valore civico dei monumenti umbri (ivi compreso il nostro paesaggio culturale) è calcolato secondo il potenziale turistico e quindi con il metro economico, vuol dire che qualcosa non torna. Non si va lontano con i quadretti di provincia capaci solo di ragionare in termini di megaeventi. Un’errata interpretazione della valorizzazione del patrimonio culturale sta trasformando le nostre città storiche in showroom alla mercede di cupidi condottieri senza prospettive. Intanto i monumenti crollano, il cemento cola ovunque, le biblioteche sono razziate e i cittadini deportati nelle new towns dalle politiche urbanistiche compiacenti verso i costruttori. Siparietto: quasi un manuale di sopravvivenza. Capito quale è il vero isolamento? E’ quello dal futuro e dal progresso, è l’allontanamento dall’idea di comunità, è la segregazione culturale provocata da chi ha interesse a volerci cittadini non partecipi, utenti passivi, adoratori della retorica del Bello. La funzione civile del patrimonio storico e artistico è uno dei principi fondanti della nostra Costituzione, vale a dire della nostra democrazia, fondata sul lavoro e sulla conoscenza. L’isolamento alberga, purtroppo, dentro di noi. Solo invertendo questa tendenza le nostre città torneranno ad essere attrattive per il mondo, che non tarderà ad accorgersene, malgrado l’innegabile emarginazione ferroviaria, aerea e stradale, che sia. Beata umbritudine, umbra beatitudine.

This is a pentax manual lens. If you own one of the pentax DSLRs you know that the crippled KAF2 mount is incapable of reading the aperture setting and there are stupid little retarded methods of manual mode to barely let you use the lenses (so they can advertise that you can, but only *sort of*)
Being an engineering student, I naturally decided to take matters into my own hands. I don't have the money for auto lenses, especially not these nice pentax-m ones such as the 200mm f4 and the 50mm f1.4
Luckily, I few dremels later and I have converted my lenses to auto diaphragm! It really shouldn't be this easy.
And in all seriousness, what do you have to lose? If you mess up, its still just a manual lens.
The recessed pin presents problems. I don't have a machine shop and I cannot load in a spring loaded piston to reach it. This is the weak point of my dremel-tool workshop. A bif of steel wool hot glued in works for now. I wouldn't want to get it wet though.
And if drilling your lenses out makes you cringe, you can always put little pieces of scotch tape on the rim instead of holes. Its just an electrical contact, and the tape worked pretty well. Of course, you'll still have to deal with the nasty pin-3.
