Deshamanya Dr. Radhika Coomaraswamy’s brother describes her as a woman of strong conviction with an unflinching sense of justice, a clear mind and a soft manner when dealing with people. “Whenever I travel the world and meet people who know Radhika, they tell me how much they admire her,” says Indrajit Coomaraswamy. “They also tell me that she’s a tough lady, and I laugh incredulously. She’s not tough at all. She stands for her principles, but she’s soft with people,” he elaborates.
A humanist and an ardent believer in nonviolence, Coo-maraswamy often goes the extra mile to propound her beliefs. In October 2004, while delivering the Mahatma Gan-dhi Memorial Oration, she declared unwaveringly: “As a Sri Lankan Tamil, I am now even more convinced that we lost our way when we made armed struggle the dominant means of fighting discrimina-tion and oppression. In Tamil circles, it is often said in whispers: ‘The LTTE and the armed struggle have brought us self-respect; we can walk on the streets without fear of Sinhalese mobs; if it was not for armed struggle, the Sinhalese would not have given us anything.’ I must disagree.” She elaborated: “I firmly believe that if we had stuck to nonviolence, if we had imagined new and more innovative forms of nonviolent protest and participatory politics, we would have been better off today as an ethnic group, as a country and as citizens of the world.”
She was born in Colombo on 17 September 1953 to Raju and Wijeyamani Coomaraswamy. Her initial education was at Ladies College. Her father was a respected member of the Sri Lanka Civil Service and worked at the Ministry Of Finance during which time he helped to establish economic relations with a large number of countries. When Coomaraswamy was eight, her father accepted the position of Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations Development Programme – and the family moved to New York.
After graduating from the United Nations International School, Coomaraswamy received her Bachelor Of Arts degree from Yale University, with a major in political science and a minor in economics. She also has a Doctor Of Jurisprudence from Columbia University, a Master Of Laws from Harvard University and boasts an honorary Ph.D. from Amherst College. She later received honorary doctorates from the University Of Edinburgh and the University Of Essex.
“She was always keen on studying,” reflects her mother. “I suggested that she return to Sri Lanka after her first degree. My own mother wanted her sent back so that she could get married. She cautioned me at the time that if Radhika qualified too much, she would never have a husband!”
Coomaraswamy first gained prominence as an international figure when, in 1994, she was made UN Special Rapporteur On Violence Against Women. She held the position on a voluntary basis until 2003 and is widely known for her tireless, outstanding work. During the course of her term, she travelled to Japan and South Korea to report on comfort women; to Brazil, on domestic violence; to Poland, on trafficking; to South Africa, on rape in the community; and to the US, on women in prisons. She also visited Rwanda and East Timor to investigate violence against women during armed conflict; Afghanistan to look at issues of religious extremism; and India, Nepal and Bangladesh to probe the trafficking of young girls. After each visit, Coomaraswamy wrote a report to the UN Commission On Human Rights.
Today, Coomaraswamy is at the zenith of her career. But on being asked what her most cherished accomplishment is, she replies that there isn’t one. “I don’t quite know what I have achieved,” she claims, modestly. “I have been lucky in life. My immediate family is such a blessing. In my work, I see so many dysfunctional families and I realise how fortunate I have been,” she affirms.
Most people assume that feminists are against marriage and family, she notes, stressing: “I am not. I think marriage and family are wonderful if they are centres of nurture and care. Feminists are only against pathological families where there is violence and abuse. I did not marry because I never found the right person. My work has kept me busy, so I did not have much time to search for one. I always felt that, given the pressure on my time, no marriage is better than the risk of a bad marriage.”
Any regrets? “Well, I always regretted not having a child,” she admits. “But, perhaps, that has been answered. The children in armed conflict are now my children,” she adds.
In April 2006, Coomaraswamy was appointed Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict. It is a prestigious post, but only one of many offers that she had previously let pass. “They sounded her out to be head of the UN Commission On Human Rights and also of Amnesty International,” her brother reveals.
Despite considerable demand for her expertise abroad, Coomaraswamy had always wanted to – and liked to – work in Sri Lanka. That was one reason she returned to the country in 1977. She was at the Marga Institute until 1982, when the International Centre For Ethnic Studies was formed and Dr. Neelan Tiruchelvam invited her to be its director.
“I think it’s fair to say that Tiruchelvam and my father were the two strongest influences in Radhika’s life, in terms of her values and professional interests,” Coomaraswamy’s brother reflects. “Her friends Suriya Wickremasinghe and Kumari Jayawardena also had an impact,” he discloses. “My father’s career inspired her interest in human development. She comes to human rights, empowerment and gender from that perspective. Radhika is essentially a humanist. She is also a good fusion of East and West. While subscribing strongly to the Western concept of individual rights, she is equally rooted in the more collectivist Eastern values related to family, community and society,” he elaborates.
In May 2003, Coomaraswamy was made Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Human Rights Commission. It was a post she held until her recent departure to New York. For her groundbreaking work as UN Special Rapporteur and for her numerous other achievements, Coomaraswamy received widespread recognition. Among the many awards with which she has been bestowed are the International Law Award from the American Bar Association, the Human Rights Award from the International Human Rights Law Group, the Bruno Kreisky Award for 2000, the Leo Ettinger Human Rights Prize from the University Of Oslo, the Cesar Romero Award from the University Of Dayton, the William J. Butler Award from the University Of Cincinnati and the Robert S. Litvack Award from McGill University.
In November 2005, in recognition of her service to the country and the world, former President Chandrika Kumaratunga conferred on her the title of ‘Deshamanya’. She is the only woman to have received the honour.
Coomaraswamy has today become a woman with immense lobbying power. “She has very good access to decision makers. She is able to use quiet diplomacy and advocacy to influence people in positions of power,” her brother asserts.
In 2004, when the University Of Essex conferred an honorary doctorate on Coomaraswamy, Prof. Kevin Boyle delivered a glowing oration in which he called her a tireless campaigner for human rights and a voice for the voiceless. “She has made a real difference – not just in the way that violence against women is now regarded in global public opinion, but also in how women’s rights and human rights are seen today,” he said.
It was a fitting tribute for a woman who has truly done Sri Lanka proud.

Forty-eight artists have been invited to exhibit responses to IMAGING THE APPLE.
The exhibition is scheduled from March 25 to May 1, 2010 at AC Institute [Direct Chapel] 547 West 27th Street, 5th & 6th floors, New York. www.artcurrents.org
IMAGING THE APPLE is a development of a successful show that toured the Eastern states of Australia in 2004 . 2005. The original exhibition was organized by artist/curator John R. Neeson who is co-curating the New York version with Elizabeth Gower also a Melbourne based artist/curator.
The New York show includes Artists from Stockholm, Beijing, Pittsburg, New York, Toledo, Hollywood, Auckland, Plymouth, Melbourne and Sydney; and in the case of Billy Tjampijinpa Kenda from an area in Central Australia as geographically remote from New York City as it's possible to get.
The Artists represent a cross generational group, with established and well known Artists such as Yoko Ono and Billy Apple, exhibiting alongside mid-career and emerging Artists, using a diverse range of media including text, photography, installation, video, sound and painting.
The conceptual basis for IMAGING THE APPLE references Paul Cézanne's ambition to 'astound Paris with the painting of a single apple'.
The apple has been a significant and reoccurring emblem in factual stories, legends and myths throughout western history.
Never actually identified as the guilty 'fruit of temptation' in the Garden of Eden, an apple nevertheless has been universally represented as the culprit for twenty centuries.
The 'apple' features in the Judgment of Paris from Ancient Greece; in the various legends of William Tell and Snow White and the poison apple from central Europe, in Isaac Newton's revelation on gravity from England, in the origin of the Granny Smith apple from Australia, and from America, Johnny Apple seed.
There is also considerable mythology surrounding why New York City became known as the .big apple.. One story is, that in the jargon of US jazz musicians a gig was an .apple. and a gig in New York City, the big apple. A second tale. dating from the 19th Century concerns a high-class bordello, run by Eve, who had the best .apples. in town.
In colloquial Australian "she'll be apples" translates, as "it will be fine" while 'an Apple a day keeps the doctor away', 'an apple for the teacher' and 'the apple of my eye' are epithets common in the English-speaking world that associates the apple with health and goodness.
Finally 'apple' has become an enduring contemporary icon associated with the legendary Beatles company, the personal computers and ipod.
All these associations resonate in various degrees of intensity through the forty-eight responses in IMAGING THE APPLE.
IMAGING THE APPLE is accompanied by a catalogue, documenting the works, and including a project essay by John R.Neeson. It is published by AC Institute and distributed by Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
IMAGING THE APPLE has received a grant through the Dame Joan Sutherland Fund from the Australian American Association and in-kind sponsorship from Chapman & Bailey, an Australian based Art materials company.

'Quiet'
Different tone of voice for this update, as this one's about me as apposed to Liam's training. If you'd like to know more about this project from my point of view, and what it's been like thus far in the process, keep reading! If not, then this is gonna get a bit introspective and soppy, so be warned!
I took today for myself. It was necessary for the benefit of my mental stimulation, motivation for this project and my ability to conduct myself in a manner fitting to the reason for me being here.
We're almost at the crest of two weeks shooting now, and this'll be officially the longest I've ever spent on a single project in one stint. It's without a doubt the most one-on-one time I've spent with a subject. It's intense, to say the least. The nature of this project is one that has thrown up, not obstacles, but learning experiences I need to quickly understand and adapt to in order to keep the momentum going.
For instance, I am not an alpha male. It's simply not who I am. I'm an introverted, artistic, gentle giant of a man-boy. Shy and considered with my words, scared of upsetting anyone. The people I'm hanging out with? Mega-alpha males. Professional fighters. Literal world champions. Men who epitomise the idea of 'being a man'. Large in both build and personality, confident in actions and conversation. As polite and welcoming as anyone I've ever known, and yet they put me on a strange back foot with my social skills. I feel it akin to hanging out with the cool kids back in secondary school, (who were often the more 'developed' guys in the year group). For some reason, despite being 23 I feel like I'm 16 next to these men. I'm naturally quiet around people I don't know because I like to get a sense of what that person is like before I open up. I'm not a fan of meaningless conversation, so when I speak up it's usually with a point behind it. I'd love to be good at small talk, but damn I'm awkward. Not even Huge Grant 'charmingly befuddled' awkward. Maybe it's because of the fast-pace lifestyle this city demands, but my natural rhythm of life seems too slow to keep up at times. Being around these men, most of which I find fascinating, I understand everything they talk about, but I find myself unable to contribute, and when I get to that point I feel like I'm a deadweight. So I pick up the camera, to remind myself that I'm here to do a job, not be popular. But it's a tight-rope situation. Being a successful freelance anything often rests on an ability to connect with people around you. It's not what you know, it's who you know, as many will be quick to remind a shy person.
Yesterday was such that I didn't feel like myself at all, and it bothered me. Quiet beyond a given reason, I could feel there was a slight tension between myself and Liam. To be honest, this was somewhat expected given the aforementioned one-on-one time between us, really it was more of a 'when' not an 'if', not that it's destructive in anyway, but you'd get testy with anyone you spend 11 consecutive days with, especially when one of them is mentally preparing for a world title fight, you know? I don't speak a lot, but when I was making a noise my voice felt quiet and timid, without a confidence I know I can possess. Yesterday I was much more acutely aware of my personal silence, and the direct effect it was having on those around me. After a full day of shooting, taking some images I was immensely happy with no less, I felt like I was at a point where I needed to figure out where my head was at to keep going strong. Maybe it was just that I was at a point of being burned out; shooting very similar things, long days, a routine of such. Whatever it was I felt like I was missing my groove, that inner-bounce that makes me excited to do what I do.
I may be quiet and introverted, but one thing I will say is that when I'm faced with a problem I make it my business to overcome it as quickly as possible. I hate dealing with a nagging issue, and especially given the time constraints of this project I felt it necessary to be drastic with getting my head back to where I know it needs to be. So I took today for myself.
I became most aware of it recently when I was writing my 3rd year dissertation, that sometimes I just need to allow time for myself in order to return to a positive state of mind. When I was getting stressed out about researching and writing that piece of work I allowed time to get away from it and focus on something completely unrelated, and not let myself feel guilty about it. Sometimes it's not that you can't concentrate anymore, but it's that you can't concentrate on something specific anymore. You still have that concentration and drive, but it's exhausted on one subject and needs a chance to change direction and a chance to explore, then eventually that motivation returns in a positive manner to the original work, often with fresh perspective and ideas.
Such was the case for me today. I needed time to myself to be able to think, consider, plan and muse on this project in the way I do with all of my projects, but I also needed an out from it for a moment so I could enjoy doing something different. I didn't see the New York skyline when I was here last time in March, so I decided to go to the top of the Rockerfeller centre and get 'that shot'. I spent a lot of time walking around the city today, exploring places I'd not seen before, and simply enjoying the sights and spectacle that is New York city.
I feel reinvigorated with myself and this project heading into Day 13.

The music world may be in a permanent state of panic and flux, but one basic principle of rock’n’roll remains true: the key to longevity is to always deliver the goods. No band has better encapsulated this ethos of integrity and determination over the last decade than Skindred.
Widely acknowledged as one of the most devastating and enthralling live bands on the planet, the Newport destroyers have been a perennial force for musical invention and remorseless positivity since emerging from the ashes of frontman Benji Webbe’s former band Dub War back in 1998. Over the course of four universally praised studio albums – Babylon (2002), Roots Rock Riot (2007), Shark Bites And Dog Fights (2009) and Union Black (2011) – Skindred’s reputation for producing the ultimate spark-spraying state-of-the-art soundclash, combining all manner of seemingly disparate musical elements into an irresistibly exhilarating explosion of energy and cross-pollinated cultural fervour has rightly earned them a reputation as a band capable of uniting people from all corners of the globe and making every last one of them tear up the dancefloor with a giant shit-eating grin plastered across their faces.
With the toughest and most infectious metal riffs colliding with the biggest, phattest hip hop and reggae grooves, cutting edge electronics and a razor-sharp pop sensibility guaranteed to encourage even the most curmudgeonly music fans bellow along with rabid enthusiasm, Skindred are both the ultimate thinking man’s party band. And now, with the release of their fifth studio album Kill The Power, Benji Webbe and his loyal henchmen – bassist Dan Pugsley, guitarist Mikey Demus and drummer Arya Goggins – are poised to spread their gospel of good times and badass tunes to an even bigger global audience.
“We know that everyone recognises us as one of the best live bands around,” says Arya. “We’re really proud of all of the albums we’ve made, but we all felt that we needed to make an album that would be as powerful and effective as the live show. That’s what Kill The Power is all about. This time, we want everyone to sit up and listen and join in the party.”
“I started DJ-ing a little while ago and it’s taught me a lot,” adds Benji. “Now I feel like I wanted to make an album where every intro to every song makes kids think ‘Fucking hell, they’re playing that song!’ Every middle eight on this album is a banger. Every chorus is massive. On this album, the lyrics are deep and the songs are just bigger than ever.”
In keeping with their tradition of making people move while singing about universal issues and spreading a message of positive action and social unity, Kill The Power is an album bulging with fury at the state of the modern world. Never afraid to tackle important topics head on, while never forgetting his band’s mission to entertain and leave the world in a sweaty, sated heap, Benji’s notoriously insane energy levels seem to be creeping up with every album and Kill The Power showcases his most furious and impactful performances to date.
“The world’s getting worse so how can I get more mellow?” he laughs. “Of course I’m getting angrier! People normally stay in a bag when it comes to lyrics. Stephen King stays with horror and he’s brilliant at it, you know? With Skindred, it’s always about encouraging an uplift. It’s about a sense of unity. Lyrics can change people’s lives, you know? You can be going down one road and hear a song and have a Road To Damascus experience and become someone else.”
On an album that has no shortage of invigorating highlights, Kill The Power takes Skindred to new extremes at both ends of the lyrical spectrum, reaching a new level of fiery intensity on the lethal cautionary tale of “Playin’ With The Devil” and the euphoric end-of-the-working-week celebration of “Saturday”: both songs proving that this band’s ability to touch the heart and fire the blood remains as incisive and potent as ever. As if to enhance their songwriting chops more than ever, Kill The Power also features several songs written in collaboration with legendary songwriting guru Russ Ballard, the man behind such immortal rock staples as Since You’ve Been Gone and God Gave Rock & Roll To You, and this seemingly perverse team-up has led to Skindred’s finest set of lyrics and melodies to date.
“Basically, I try to write songs that people can interpret however they like,” says Benji. “When I wrote ‘Playin’ With The Devil’, I originally wrote some words down on a piece of paper thinking about friends I’ve had who smoke crack and live on the pipe, you know? I wrote the song about that kind of thing, but then a couple of days later the riots happened in London and so it became about that as well. When you shit on your own doorstep, your house is going to smell of shit. You’ve got to clean that up! With ‘Saturday’, it’s not a typical Skindred song; it’s a big celebration. We got Russ Ballard involved on that one and he helped me structure the lyrics in the right way so when the chorus hits, it hits like a hammer. It’s an upbeat song but when you listen to the lyrics it goes on about how people all have different reasons to be out and partying. Some people are celebrating, some people are drowning their sorrows, and we all come together on a Saturday. When this record comes out and people go to a club on a Saturday, that’s when it’s gonna go off! The chorus is huge!”
While Skindred’s previous album Union Black was dominated by the bleeps, booms and squelches of British electronic dance music, albeit balanced out by Mikey Demus’ trademark riffs, the new album sees the band return to a more organic sound that amounts to the most accurate representation of the Skindred live experience yet committed to tape. From the huge beats and stuttering samples of the opening title track and the laudably demented Ninja through to the insistent melodies and rampaging choruses of “The Kids Are Right Now” and “Saturday” and on to the thunderous, metallic throwdowns of “Proceed With Caution” and “Ruling Force” and the cool acoustic breeze of the closing More Fire, Kill The Power is Skindred cranked up to full throttle and revelling in their own febrile creativity like never before.
“It’s all about making an album that moves people in the same way that our live shows do,” says Arya. “We love what we achieved on Union Black and we still used a lot of those basic ideas on Kill The Power, but this time it’s a more organic sound. All the drum loops you hear were originally played by me before we started chopping them up, and there are a lot more guitars on this record too. We love combining all the music that we love in Skindred but we all love heavy music and we’re a rock band at heart and that really comes across this time.”
“We’ve delivered an album that’s gonna make people rock for the next few years,” states Benji. “You know what? I can’t do anything about record sales, but if people come to a Skindred show they’re gonna know they’ve been there, you know? Ha ha! The music we make is not about Christians or Muslims, straight people or gay people, black or white or any of that shit. When people are in that room together it’s just Skindred, one unity and one strength!”
Having conquered numerous countries around the world, Skindred could easily be taking a breather and resting on their laurels at this point. Instead, this most dedicated and hard-working of modern bands are preparing to launch their most exuberant assault on the world ever when Kill The Power hits the streets. Anyone that has ever seen the band live before will confirm that it is impossible not to get fired up and drawn into the joyous abandon of a Skindred show and with their greatest album to date primed and ready to explode, the best live band on the planet simply cannot fail to conquer the entire world this time round. Wherever and whoever you are, Skindred are coming. Open your ears and get your dancing feet ready…
“There’s nothing better than being on stage with these guys,” says Arya. “Skindred is my favourite band and I’m so lucky to be part of this thing we’ve created. We’ve been all over the world but there are always new places to visit and new crowds to play for. We just want to keep getting bigger and better.”
“We’re a global band. We’ve played in Colombia and India and everywhere and it’s the same energy,” Benji concludes. “I get letters from people in Hawaii and people in Turkey. It’s all the same. We resonate globally and it’s the greatest thing ever. It seems funny to us sometimes because we’re always kicking each other’s heads in and saying ‘You’re a wanker!’ to each other before we go on stage, but as soon as it’s time to play the show the oneness this band creates together and the unity we bring is unique. I’ve never experienced anything like it and we can’t wait to get back on the road and do it all again.”

Every year in April since 2001, the substantial number of 25,000 people from all over Europe come to the largest Fantasy event on the European continent: the Elf Fantasy Fair.
Two-third of the visitors have transformed into orcs, magicians, dragons, knights, vampires, elves, unicorns, gothic lolita, manga comic hero or a combination of these. Every year the costumes are getting more resourceful and more artistic. In the midst of the budding nature of the Castle park which belongs to the largest castle of the Netherlands – Kasteel de Haar fantasy lovers indulge themselves in all that is offered and coveted: medieval music, dancing, lectures, theatre plays, and parades.
Sinds 2001 komen elk jaar in april een groeiend aantal mensen uit heel Europa op de Elf Fantasy Fair editie Haarzuilens naar het grootste fantasy evenement dat op het Europese continent georganiseerd wordt: de Elf Fantasy Fair.

St Mary, Burston, Norfolk
Perhaps this is not Norfolk's most exciting or interesting church. A round tower fell in the 18th century, and the parish could afford to do no more than patch up the remains. After decades of neglect, the nave and chancel were refashioned in an uncharacteristically utilitarian manner by the Victorians, leaving a rather barn-like structure. The nave walls, with their massive Perpendicular-style windows and buttressing, look very curious under the shallow tiled roof, but the scattering of red brick at the west end gives it character, and the whole piece is not unattractive in the wide, tree-scattered graveyard. Internally, the church was converted for community use in the 1990s, giving the nave the character of a village hall, and the church was generally left locked. However, there has been a great change of heart here recently, perhaps not unconnected with the funding received for a major restoration in 2013, and today the church is open every day.
Despite the battering, repatching and refurbishing of the last couple of centuries, Burston church is full of interest. None of the nave furnishings were retained, but the font is a decent 14th Century affair with characterful figures around the stem. Above it on the west wall is one of Norfolk's best James I royal arms, still in its original frame. The chancel retains something of its 19th Century integrity, some of the stencilling exposed from behind the limewash which had concealed it in the 1960s when it had deteriorated to such an extent that it had become unsightly to eyes that in those days did not approve of Victorianisation of this kind. The glass in the east window is a good example of the more conservative strand in 1930s stained glass, and it would be interesting to know who the workshop was.
There are memorials to two local boys killed in World War One in the nave, and one of these is of particular interest. It remembers Herbert Garnham, killed on the Somme in September 1916. He was 25 years old. Intriguingly, the inscription records that the memorial was erected by his uncle. This was because Herbert's father had refused to allow a memorial to his son in the parish church. The Garnhams were participants in the Burston School Strike, a violent dispute between the rector of this church and the working people of the village. When Herbert Garnham's father learned of the memorial being placed in the church, he attacked it with a sledgehammer, smashing it to the floor. For this, he received a month in prison, and the memorial was repaired and restored to the wall, although you can still see the cracks in it today.
So, what was this disagreement that tore apart this small rural community in the early decades of the 20th Century? To answer that question you should look immediately to the west of the churchyard, for here on a patch of grass sits the world famous Burston Strike School, a memory of what is sometimes referred to as the longest strike in British history.
In 1913, Kitty and Tom Higdon, headmistress and senior teacher respectively of the Burston Church of England village school, came into dispute with the school managers after Tom Higdon had been elected to the parish council. The Higdons were Christian Socialists, and were widely perceived as troublemakers. They refused to let the children be taken out of school to help with the harvest, or to do back-breaking, poorly-paid work like stone-picking. Such employment was illegal, of course, but it was the universal practice in rural areas at the start of the 20th century.
The Higdons' nemesis was the Reverend Charles Tucker Eland, Rector of St Mary. He was a clergyman of the old type, an unchallenged authority figure in this parish without a resident squire. Not surprisingly, he held Victorian views of the relationships between the classes, as did the majority of the tenant farmers. The 1870 Education Act had decreed universal education, but the role of education was so often interpreted as preparing the children for their place in the social order. Under such circumstances, learning to read and write was acceptable, but learning to think was positively to be discouraged. It was expected that the boys of the parish would become poorly-paid farm workers, and the girls would go into service.
Tom Higdon was a popular figure with the local farmworkers, and he championed their fight for higher wages and better conditions. Universal suffrage for men allowed him to top the poll in the Parish Council elections, and the Reverend Eland came bottom, losing his seat. But, crucially, he still led and controlled the School Board. Within days, the School Board found an excuse to sack the Higdons from their roles as headmistress and senior teacher.
Twenty years earlier, that would probably have been the end of the story. Twenty years later, it perhaps wouldn't have happened at all. But this was a crucial moment in European history. Far off, in Sarajevo, a single shot fired at the Archduke Franz Ferdinand set in chain a sequence of events that would lead to the Great War, which would change rural East Anglia forever. It was also to have an unforeseen effect on what happened next.
The Higdons set up an open air school on the village green. Magnificently, the great majority of the poorer families of the parish took their children out of the village school and sent them to learn from the Higdons.
The establishment reacted. The Rector, shamefully, expelled the striking families who held allotments on his land, and he had their crops destroyed. Other families were given notice to quit from their tied cottages. However, these evictions were not carried through, because the Great War had led to a serious shortage of labour, and the tenant farmers simply could not afford to lose their workers. The principles of the farmers were not as strong as those of the farmworkers, or perhaps they were merely pragmatic. In the event, the Strike School survived and prospered, moving into a carpenter's workshop that first winter, and then into a fully equipped, brand new school funded by collections made by Trade Union and Socialist organisations around the world.
The church school also continued, and by the 1920s the two schools had settled down into an uneasy but workable rivalry. The old order was falling away, the Reverend Eland retired, and his replacement, Francis Smith, supported both schools equally, giving religious instruction in both. The Strike School lasted until 1939, by which time the Higdons were both in their seventies. After Tom died, Kitty gave up the school, and it closed. The strike had lasted 25 years.
Today, the Strike School is a museum, but the village green is still the focus for a national Trade Union rally on the first Saturday of each September. The village school continues to survive in the same buildings from which the Higdons walked away a century ago. For many, the main reason for visiting Burston today is the Higdons and the story of Britain's longest strike. The Higdons are buried side by side in the churchyard in simple graves to the south-west of the church, by the churchyard wall and only a few yards from the Strike School that they set up.

“The world’s getting worse so how can I get more mellow?” he laughs. “Of course I’m getting angrier! People normally stay in a bag when it comes to lyrics. Stephen King stays with horror and he’s brilliant at it, you know? With Skindred, it’s always about encouraging an uplift. It’s about a sense of unity. Lyrics can change people’s lives, you know? You can be going down one road and hear a song and have a Road To Damascus experience and become someone else.”
On an album that has no shortage of invigorating highlights, Kill The Power takes Skindred to new extremes at both ends of the lyrical spectrum, reaching a new level of fiery intensity on the lethal cautionary tale of “Playin’ With The Devil” and the euphoric end-of-the-working-week celebration of “Saturday”: both songs proving that this band’s ability to touch the heart and fire the blood remains as incisive and potent as ever. As if to enhance their songwriting chops more than ever, Kill The Power also features several songs written in collaboration with legendary songwriting guru Russ Ballard, the man behind such immortal rock staples as Since You’ve Been Gone and God Gave Rock & Roll To You, and this seemingly perverse team-up has led to Skindred’s finest set of lyrics and melodies to date.
“Basically, I try to write songs that people can interpret however they like,” says Benji. “When I wrote ‘Playin’ With The Devil’, I originally wrote some words down on a piece of paper thinking about friends I’ve had who smoke crack and live on the pipe, you know? I wrote the song about that kind of thing, but then a couple of days later the riots happened in London and so it became about that as well. When you shit on your own doorstep, your house is going to smell of shit. You’ve got to clean that up! With ‘Saturday’, it’s not a typical Skindred song; it’s a big celebration. We got Russ Ballard involved on that one and he helped me structure the lyrics in the right way so when the chorus hits, it hits like a hammer. It’s an upbeat song but when you listen to the lyrics it goes on about how people all have different reasons to be out and partying. Some people are celebrating, some people are drowning their sorrows, and we all come together on a Saturday. When this record comes out and people go to a club on a Saturday, that’s when it’s gonna go off! The chorus is huge!”
While Skindred’s previous album Union Black was dominated by the bleeps, booms and squelches of British electronic dance music, albeit balanced out by Mikey Demus’ trademark riffs, the new album sees the band return to a more organic sound that amounts to the most accurate representation of the Skindred live experience yet committed to tape. From the huge beats and stuttering samples of the opening title track and the laudably demented Ninja through to the insistent melodies and rampaging choruses of “The Kids Are Right Now” and “Saturday” and on to the thunderous, metallic throwdowns of “Proceed With Caution” and “Ruling Force” and the cool acoustic breeze of the closing More Fire, Kill The Power is Skindred cranked up to full throttle and revelling in their own febrile creativity like never before.
“It’s all about making an album that moves people in the same way that our live shows do,” says Arya. “We love what we achieved on Union Black and we still used a lot of those basic ideas on Kill The Power, but this time it’s a more organic sound. All the drum loops you hear were originally played by me before we started chopping them up, and there are a lot more guitars on this record too. We love combining all the music that we love in Skindred but we all love heavy music and we’re a rock band at heart and that really comes across this time.”

I can’t do anything about record sales, but if people come to a Skindred show they’re gonna know they’ve been there, you know? Ha ha! “There’s nothing better than being on stage with these guys,” says Arya. “Skindred is my favourite band and I’m so lucky to be part of this thing we’ve created. We’ve been all over the world but there are always new places to visit and new crowds to play for. We just want to keep getting bigger and better.”
“We’re a global band. We’ve played in Colombia and India and everywhere and it’s the same energy,” Benji concludes. “I get letters from people in Hawaii and people in Turkey. It’s all the same. We resonate globally and it’s the greatest thing ever. SUMMARY
Theophilus Raynsford Mann is a naturalist, occultist, Buddhist and Taoist. In 1982, Mann developed a technique for abstract photography, applied “Rayonism” into photographic works. Mann staged 32 individual, extraordinary exhibitions around Taiwan, who was the first exhibitor around Formosa. Mann’s works is the beginning of modernization in the modern abstract arts in the world. At the University of Oxford, Mann’s attractive topic was “A View of Architectural History: Towns through the Ages from Winchester through London Arrived at Oxford in England”; also an author at the University of California, Berkeley and the University of Michigan in the United States; an alumnus from Christ Church College at the University of Oxford in England, the University of Glamorgan in Wales, and National Taiwan University in Taipei on Taiwan. Mann’s works have been quoted by the scholars many times, making Mann one of the highly cited technological, artistic, and managing public administrators in the academia. Mann was listed in “Taiwan Who’s Who In Business” © 1984, 1987, 1989 Harvard Management Service.
Early Life and Record of Genealogy
Theophilus Raynsford Mann possesses both Taiwanese and German surnames from birth. Usually, whenever anyone asks Mann about where he comes from, he would reply “Formosa” as he grew up and was educated in the Far East and lives in Taiwanese and Japanese lifestyles. Moreover, he often teaches and educates younger generations based on the methods of the Far Eastern teaching he experienced when he was young, though he does not oppose the Western ways of teaching and thinking. Mann takes great pride in his roots, which go back 150 years (since 1864); Mann’s ancestry originates and creates generations, and prepares younger generations to succeed their personality and ethical standards and integrity.
Education in Taiwan and a Brief of Latest Generation of History in Taiwan / Formosa
In 1980, Mann obtained his postgraduate certificate from the Graduate Institute of Electrical Engineering of National Taiwan University in Taipei; successfully completed another graduate studies in Information dBase III Plus and Taiwanese Traditional Chinese Mandarin Information System at National Sun Yat-Sen University in Kaohsiung in 1989.
In history, the Portuguese explorers discovered and called the island (Taiwan), “Formosa” (meaning “Beautiful Island”) in 1590. They are non-Chinese people; it was long a Chinese and Japanese pirate base. Fighting continued, between its original inhabitants of Taiwanese and the Chinese settlers, into the 19th century. In 1894-95 first Sino-Japanese War that ended in Manchus of the Qing (Ching) dynasty defeat, the late Manchu Qing Government forced to cede Formosa to Japan. This result was made by the Treaty of Shomonoseki in 1895 and remained under Japanese control until the end of the Second World War. Early on, Taiwan was conquered by the Qing in 1683 and for the first time became part of older China dynasty. However, today, the home country of Mann’s origin has around 165 institutions (93 universities) of higher education, which now has one of the best-educated populations in Asia. Among the major public (state) ones are the National Taiwan University (NTU) at Taipei, and National Sun Yat-Sen University (NSYSU) at Kaohsiung. NSYSU is also called National Chun-Shan University; according to Times Higher Education 2010-2011, NSYSU ranks as the 3rd university in Taiwan, 21st in Asia, and 163rd worldwide. National Taiwan University is ranked 51 to 60 ranks on Times Higher Education World University Rankings - Top Universities by Reputation 2013, the United Kingdom (see www.timeshighereducation.co.uk/world-university-rankings/...); King's College London (KCL) (21st in the world and 6th in Europe in the 2010, QS World University Rankings), the University of London, and University of Southern California (is one of the world's leading private research universities, located in the heart of Los Angeles), afterward.
Backing to Mann’s early school-time of Taiwan Provincial Kaohsiung Industrial Senior High School (Kaohsiung Municipal Kaohsiung Industrial High school), the professional technical education, which is equivalent to Advanced Level General Certificate of Education, commonly referred to as an A-level in the United Kingdom; China Electronic Engineering College, the distance learning programme, which is in equivalence as UK’s Diploma of Higher Education / Undergraduate Diploma (as an Associate Degree in the United States). Early Career
In 1989, Mann instituted Mann’s Office of Electrical Engineer, he settled himself in electrical technology and industries as a chief engineer in his early years. He put his professional and precise knowledge to good account in business management. A formal business management with business relationship established to provide for regular services, dealings, and other commercial transactions and deed. He had many customers having a business and credit relationship with his firm then he was a successful engineer.
Study Abroad and Immigration into the United Kingdom
In 1998, Mann studied abroad when he arrived in Great Britain; he studied at School of Built Environment, the University of Glamorgan (Prifysgol Morgannwg) in Merthyr Tydfil, Pontypridd, Wales for a master of science in real estate appraisal. Afterward, Mann immigrated into the United Kingdom in the early year of 2004.
PHILOSOPHICAL VIEWS
Mann is a naturalist; he trusts spiritual naturalism and naturalistic spirituality, which teaches that “the unknown” created this wonderful world. “The unknown” arranged the nature with its law so that everything in nature is kept balanced and in order. However, human beings failed to control themselves, deliberately went against the law of nature, and resulted in disasters, which we deserved. He also is an occultist, a Taoist, and a Buddhist; but in Britain, he frequently goes to Christian and Catholic churches, where he makes friends with pastors and fathers as well as churchgoers. In his mind, he recognizes “Belief is truth held in the mind; faith is a fire in the heart”. He is always a freethinker, does not accept traditional, social, and religious teaching, but based on his ideas: a thought or conception that potentially and actually exists in his mind as a product of mental activity - his opinion, conviction, and principle. If people have not come across eastern classics and philosophy, we are afraid that people would never understand Theophilus Raynsford Mann. People cannot judge an eastern philosopher based on western ways of thinking. He studies I Ching discovering eastern classics of ancient origin consisting of 64 interrelated hexagrams along with commentaries. The hexagrams embody Taoist philosophy by describing all nature and human endeavour in terms of the interaction of yin and yang, and the classics may be consulted as an oracle.
Back in the 1990s when Mann just arrived at England, he had been offered places to do Ph.D. and LL.M. degrees (degree in Law and Politics of the European Union) by several western professors in the Great Britain. He has met all the requirements for postgraduate admissions to study at UK’s universities.
During his time at Oxford, he learnt a lot of British culture and folk-custom while carrying out research with many British and Western professors, experts, and archaeologists. This proves that Mann understands various aspects in British society, culture, and lifestyles. Of course, he does not fully understand about the perspectives of thinking of a typical British. For example, what would be the most valuable in life for a British person? What would a British want to gain from life? What is the goal in life for a British? Is it fortune or a lover? Alternatively, perhaps honour? On the other hand, maybe being able to travel around the world and see the world?

Jurisprudence and Political Philosophy and Perspectives

In present world, Mann really knows the full meanings of “Fundamental Human Rights and Equal Opportunities for the People”. He thinks ethics is the moral code governing the daily conduct of the individual toward those about him / her. It represents those rules or principles by which men and women live and work in a spirit of mutual confidence and service. Without going into the question of how an ethical code was formulated or why anybody should obey it, we can look at the matter in a common-sense fashion with reference to its influence upon our legal affairs. In brief, from the law point of view, a reputable ethical code embodies the qualities of accuracy, dependability, fair play, sound judgement, and service. It is based upon honesty.
No person can have an ethical code that concerns him / her alone. Living in society, as he / she must, a person encounters others whose rights must be respected as well as his / her own. An honest regard for the rights of others is an essential element of any decent code of ethics, and one that anyone must observe if anybody intends to follow that code. After all, ethics is not something apart from human beings. Indeed, there is no such thing apart from our actions and us. It is the duty, therefore, of every man and woman in legal affairs to see that his daily associations with others are truly in conformity with the plain meaning of the Ten Commandments: “Thou shalt not barratry, thou shalt not bear false witness, thou shalt not receive illegal fee and the rest”.
The knowledge Mann has, in connection with legal affairs, was usually come from his precious experiences of his past over ten year’s law and political careers. Mann had excellent experiences in political and law work was pertaining to mixed civil and crime, the code of mixed civil and criminal procedure, construction, and commercial law abroad. The experiences of legal services related to the rights of private individuals and legal proceedings concerning these rights as distinguished. In the criminal proceedings, he did many cases for the defendants. A keen intellect, a normal emotionally, a through understanding of human nature, experience of law work, sincerity, and integrity.
Developed a Technique for Abstract Photography and Abstractionist
In 1982, Mann developed a technique for abstractive photography, which applied “rayonism” to the photographic works. In November of 1984, Mann was 26-year-old, he instructed many professors and students of National Taiwan Normal University in photography of abstract impressionism and rayonnisme in Taipei, Taiwan. The word “rayonnisme” is French for rayonism - a style of abstract painting developed in 1911 in Russia.

Mann staged 32 individual, extraordinary exhibitions and annual special exhibitions on photography of abstractive image and Rayonnisme around Taiwan / Formosa. Mann was the first exhibitor around the country. All of the invited displays were by the Taiwan’s Government, cultural and artistic organisations, and sponsors. Mann’s earliest exhibition took place in the National Taiwan Arts Education Center (Museum) on 19 December 1983 when Mann was 25 years old; Mann was the youngest exhibitor in the history of the Center in any solo exhibitions. The Center that was opened in March 1957, kept a collection of Mann’s work. It is currently updating the Center’s internal organisation and strengthening co-operation with leading centers and museums around the world. Meanwhile, it widened the center’s scope to increase its emphasis on Taiwan’ regional culture and folk arts.
Modernization in the Modern Abstract Arts of Taiwan
Mann’s works is the beginning of modernization in the modern abstract arts of Taiwan, China and greater Chinese society in the world. The use of “modernisation” as a concept that is opposed to “Traditional” of “Conservative” ideas began with the approach of the 20th century. It spreads rapidly through academic circles, and was broadly accepted as a means to reform society. Chinese Manchu Qing (Ching) dynasty’s first steps toward modernisation began in the Tung-chih era (1862-1874) with the “Self-Empowerment Movement”. During the late 19th century, as late Manchu dynasty was confronted on all sides by foreign aggression, voices throughout society debated the most effective means to reform and strengthen the country. Some advocated “combining the best of East and West”, while others went so far as to call for “complete Westernisation”. Taiwan was at the centre of these waves of reform. Faced with direct threats against the island by foreign enemies, the Chinese Ching dynasty court took special steps to push Taiwan’s modernisation.
In a role just like that of a gardener wanting to create a rich and fertile environment for the seeds of culture, one in which Mann may sprout, grow and bloom. Mann aims to provide an educational stimulus for society by introducing his works - Mann can express the neo-romantic spirit deftly from various creations and supporting international artistic exchanges. Mann believes that the first step in creating such a new and independent state is the real emergence of culture and arts, for which the art and science of designing and erecting buildings, and fine arts (including photography and motion picture) of the civilization is a good measurement of success. For the foreseeable future, Mann should be continuing to forge ahead, working diligently and unceasingly towards its mission of raising China and Formosa / Taiwan’s culture in his spare time.
Became an Author and a Scholar
In 1980, Theophilus Raynsford Mann completed his first book - scenario original “The Soul's Sentimentalizing”, also named: “Hun Yun : Jin Qi Tu Rui” 電影原著《魂韻》(衿契吐蕊) then Mann was at the age of 22. In 1983, The General Library of the University of California, Berkeley in the United States of America, collected and kept Mann’s writings - scenario original 「魂韻 : 衿契吐蕊」“Hun Yun : jin qi tu rui”, included a musical composition of his own – “Sonate Nr. 1 C-dur op. 3 für Klavier (piano)”, composed on 3rd April 1977 then Mann was 18 years old. The works were published in 1980; the theme was based on “The Soul's Sentimentalizing”. Another masterpiece was an Album of Academic Work for News Publication “Theophilus Raynsford Mann Photographic Exhibition of Rayonnisme / Rayonism”, published in 1985. The Hathi Trust Digital Library, the University of Michigan also collected and kept Mann’s writings.
Authorship
Mann’s articles and writings were published in more than 200 different kinds of domestic and foreign magazines, newspapers, and periodicals, in the period between May of 1972 and 1990s. It was all started when Mann was just 13-year-old. Many of which have been very influential. These have been quoted by Western and Eastern scholars many times in the last few years, making Mann one of the highly cited technological, artistic, and managing public administrators in the world in the late 20th and early 21st century. The Ministry of the Interior in Taiwan had registered Mann’s professional writings and given him two certificates of copyright. The numbers are 33080 and 33081 on 4th July of 1985; and Taiwan’s Gazette of The Presidential Office issue No. 4499, featured his writings on 4th September 1985.
Became an Academic and Film Director
Today, Mann is a professor at Space Time Life Research Academy, and a photographer, film director, and computer engineer now live and work in London.

He acquired awards and certificates of honour about twenty times from National Taiwan Arts Education Center (Museum) on 24 December 1983; Kaohsiung Municipal Social Education Center on 17 March 1984, Kaohsiung Cultural Center, Taipei Cultural Center (Taipei Municipal Social Education Hall); and Taiwan Province Government, Taipei City Government, Kaohsiung City Government, and many cultural centres and art galleries, and so on.
