A marvelous window into the past, Magic Lantern slides are often overlooked as a source of excellent historical images. On the top edge of this slide is a label reading "Servian [sic] Soldiers," and there is another label on the left side with the notation "European War."

The mystery posed by this image is "WHICH European War?" I have no access to any materials on Serbian militaria, so I can't date the picture by the uniforms or the weapons. Balkan history is riddled with war and conflicts, but a few of the ones that come to mind are the Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885, the First Balkan War in 1912, and the Second Balkan War in 1913. There was, of course, WWI 1914-1918, but I suspect this image might predate that time period. There may have been other conflicts; these are just the ones I could think of on the spur of the moment.

If any one can date this image I would be very grateful. Also, if someone could identify the regiments the different soldiers represent as well as their weapons, that would be SUPER!

NOTE: See discussion below by gps1941, who sheds some further light on the time period of this image.

This is a little exercise for fun.

It starts with a shot of the empty background (grass only)

Then I took 16 common foods for my two favorites assistants who had positioned a bit randomly. Put few money here and there... (the same) ..

All taken in 30 pictures were done with the same settings in manual mode (iso, wb, tv, av)

Then, i used my preferred editing tools to isolate each of the elements and moving many a bit ..

Small problem this morning, some clouds have darkened a bit some pictures... and I have to re-expose some.

But as usual, I preferred using the dual iso hacked mode to have a dynamic range close to 14 stops .. Thanks Magic Lantern and A1ex for his amazing work ... Then the title ...

This is the first image I took out of the 12GB of images I captured during the Solar Eclipse on August 21, 2017 at Frosty Drew Observatory in Charlestown, RI. This image was captured at 2:11 p.m. ET. We experienced greatest eclipse at 2:47 p.m. ET with the Moon eclipsing 66.55% of the Sun from our location. I will post additional images over the next week or two.

The Mirroscope is an opaque projector known as an episcope, and sometimes called a magic lantern. Inside are two electric light bulbs which illuminate the object to be projected. Usually this object would be a postcard, photo, or other printed matter, but objects such as coins or leaves could also be projected. The light is reflected through the lens, and the image is projected onto a wall or screen.

This example is an improved model (made around 1913), with the addition of the two heat stacks directly above the light bulbs, designed to allow the heat to escape while preventing light from entering. Focus is achieved by moving the telescoping lens tube in or out.

Other Mirroscopes I've seen have a standard two-prong plug, but the cord on this one terminates in a screw base which fits into a light bulb socket.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that this Mirroscope still had two of those old teardrop-shaped bulbs inside - the kind with the little point at the top - but even more surprised when they both worked!

because of not all my shots not working as I planned on my recent trip to the beach at Point Lonsdale, Victoria, I decided to have a good hard think about my workflow practices & came up with a bit of a brainwave solution to some dynamic range issues i've been experiencing of late that have been getting me down.

So I took some time out on my way home to catch some brackets & have just processed my first image using this refined technique. & I'm very happy. I think i've squeezed a bit more sharpness & better colour rendering out of the final image due to this cleaner method of catching the extremes of dynamic range.

If you light a lantern for another, it will also brighten your own way.

This photo was taken by a Kowa/SIX medium format film camera with a Kowa 1:4/40mm lens and Asahi Pentax ø100 Y48(Y2) filter + adapter using Ilford Delta 400 Pro film, the negative scanned by an Epson Perfection V600 and digitally rendered with Photoshop.

This is a shot of the Messier 41 open star cluster in the constellation Canis Major. Residing at 2,300 light years distant, the relatively small cluster of about 100 stars spans 25 light years in diameter. Under dark skies free of moonlight and light pollution, M41 is barely naked eye visible below the bright star, Sirius.

Panorama of the iconic 'Marina Bay' area in Singapore, taken from the 'LeVel 33' Restaurant, had a very enjoyable meal up there with my relatives. It rained most of the day (As you can see that lovely grey cloud just passing through) but the sun came out for about 30 seconds so I quickly grabbed this shot of the evening light hitting the buildings.

Enjoy! :)

This is a boldly illustrated glass slide featuring a traditional lifeboat man.

The slide is from some time between the late 19th century and early 20th century. It would have been viewed using a magic lantern, an early type of image projector.
