One of Elke Bührmann's most beloved colors is white, in all its shades from bright to opaque, from cream tone to white-eggshell. The Bremen painter always combines warm and earthy tones, created from a variety of materials that are processed in sophisticated mixed techniques on canvas or paper. Rust, fabrics, shells, sand, paper or sifted earth (in an amazing range from pale yellow to red terracotta) give a structure that, combined with natural stains, creates very special colors. The artist uses acrylic less and less often and then in soft tones: "They are not colored," comments Bührmann herself of her current work. Elke Bührmann finds inspiration everywhere: they can be old doors, house walls, rust, tree bark, stones, or they can be inspired by reading texts of painting and observing the works of other artists, as well as in nature and still with writing. Fragments of text and titles of the newspaper are transformed into small parables with a message that insinuates themselves with sagacity among the artist's paintings.

Uno dei colori più amati da Elke Bührmann è il bianco, in tutte le sue sfumature da luminose a opache, dalla tinta crema a un bianco vicino al color guscio d'uovo. La pittrice di Brema combina sempre toni caldi e terrosi, creati da una varietà di materiali che vengono elaborati in sofisticate tecniche miste su tela o carta. Ruggine, tessuti, conchiglie, sabbia, carta o terra setacciata (in una gamma sorprendente dal giallo pallido al rosso terracotta) conferiscono una struttura che, combinata con macchie naturali, crea colori molto speciali. L'artista utilizza l'acrilico sempre meno spesso e poi in toni tenui: «Non sono colorati», commenta la stessa Bührmann del suo attuale lavoro. Elke Bührmann trova ispirazione ovunque: possono essere vecchie porte, muri di casa, la ruggine, corteccia d'albero, pietre, o possono essere ispirati leggendo testi di pittura e osservando i lavori di altri artisti, così come in natura e ancora con la scrittura. Frammenti di testo e titoli del giornale vengono trasformati in piccole parabole con un messaggio che si insinuano con sagacia tra i dipinti dell'artista.
