Here's a long long thing.
The picture is a decade old from a Thanksgiving trip to Great Sand Dunes National Park in southern Colorado, taken on the day we went walking out on the dunes. I post this not so much to mark the passing of a decade as to mark the impending passing of another thing, which I discussed one time using another picture from Great Sand Dunes.
People who have been on the Flickr for a while will remember the Great Debacle of May, 2013, when a Yahoo named Marissa Meyer arbitrarily decided to blow everything around here up for no reason. I was among the large number of people who got mad over this, so I abandoned the Flickr page for a while. You can't tell scrolling through my history now because I went back later and post-dated everything, but there was a four-year period when I didn't post to Flickr at all. I jumped ship and found a tiny Flickr Euro-clone called Ipernity, and for four years and change -- everything between this post and this post -- all my photography and writing appeared over there.
Ipernity was a nice little site run at that time by seven guys in France, and an unexpected effect of its smaller community was that everybody was suddenly a much larger fish in a much smaller pond. I think at its height, there were probably something under 3,000 users on Ipernity, and the small scope encouraged a more social community with the exact kind of thoughtful interaction and deep discussion Marissa Meyer was actively killing on Flickr. But nothing lasts forever, and over time, a combination of extremely French self-sabotage combined with the basic reality of online economics (web sites don't make money unless they're huge) to kill the thing. I first noticed the signs of a downward trajectory for the thing early in 2015 (here's a post alluding to it), and by the end of 2016 the end was clear. The one guy left running the site, its original founder, announced he was closing up shop in January of 2017, and I started somberly getting ready to start back up on Flickr. But Ipernity had an extremely committed customer base who desperately wanted to keep the thing alive, so a group of them got together and initiated a takeover. They formed themselves in the Ipernity Members Association (the IMA), talked the site's owner thing into handing it over to them for free -- oddly, while also running his name through the mud in a way that really irked me -- and have been running it ever since as a sort of user-owned co-op. It's all very collectivist and European.
But I didn't go along with the IMA, and my reasons for that have a lot to do with why I'm posting this today. It's really two-fold. One, I had previously had interpersonal strife with several of the specific members who formed the IMA leadership, and I wanted nothing to do with any web site they'd run. But more than that, these were the kind of arrogant, willfully ignorant optimists who drive me absolutely nuts, the kind of people Dunning and Kruger were thinking about when they dreamed up their effect. None of the IMA leadership -- or really, anybody left using the site -- had any experience running a web site or operating a business. None of them were programmers. None of the knew html or any other computer language. None of them knew business management or accounting. One guy knew enough about MS Excel to put together a spreadsheet, but that was it. What they did have, though, was confidence! They believed in themselves and could envision their success, and everybody knows that when you're confident, success is inevitable! Everyone from Norman Vincent Peale to Donald Trump will tell you that! Reality doesn't matter even a little bit when you believe.
Now, me? I'm a realist, so I didn't go along with their schtick, but about 1,200 people did, and they collectively created a kind of Happy-Daze-Hang-In-There-You-Can-Do-It culture that pretended everything in the outside world that might rub against their preconceived notions was just a hoax. I know, because I got into a bunch of pretty fierce internet fights with them for a little while before I walked away. These people tolerated no dissension. They allowed no wavering. The people the IMA selected as its customer relations voices -- who both happened to also be the site's two biggest assholes -- loudly and viciously shouted down any questions. They knew the way, they said. They knew what they were doing, and they didn't need any negative nancies killing their vibe.
The second half of the last decade seems to have been a climax for that kind of thing world-wide, and not just on the internet. We're getting to the punchline for all that now.
For Ipernity, the hammer fell very suddenly around last Thanksgiving, when the site suddenly collapsed for technical reasons nobody involved could understand. These aren't technological people, you see. They dipped into their savings -- they have something like $25,000 they've collected mostly from donations -- and hired some technological people to get the site back up after about two weeks, and it went fine for a few days. But then something else broke -- nobody knows what, though the jackass spokesman is sure the former owner sabotaged them -- and on December 4, the site lost the capacity to upload anything. Nobody on this picture-sharing web site can share pictures. It's dead in the water. The hippy-dippy Ipernity culture is deluding itself with notions that somebody somehow is eventually going to fix it, but I don't think anybody's going to fix it. Why? Because the real world is actually a thing.
You see, the thing about Ipernity -- and a big reason why the former owner was going to shut it down in 2017 -- is that it was written in cobbled-together patches of old code that just don't fly in the modern technological landscape, and the whole thing needs to be rebuilt from scratch. The former owner had neither the money nor the inclination to do that, so his plan was to shut it down. Fair enough, I say. The IMA had no reason to believe any of that needed to be done, so they kept it going on magic beans and pixie dust. But part of their survival plan involved switching over to Amazon servers to host the thing, and Jeff Bezos has little tolerance for primitive sites running decade-old code, and the cobbled patches just don't work any more. And that won't change. So, in short, Ipernity is doomed. The IMA and its 1,200 adherents just don't know it yet. I'm watching them grow more and more frustrated as they flail around for a solution that has to be there now.
And why am I posting all this long bit of background about a little thing?
Because this kind of magical thinking exhibited by the IMA is everywhere in the world right now, and it's ruined everything there is to ruin. It's a know-it-all arrogance that discounts actual knowledge and expertise in favor of so-called "common sense" and positive vibes. You don't need to listen to some dumb scientist telling you the climate's warming when you can see the snow outside! You don't need to hear some epidemiologist telling you to wear a mask when you know the virus is a hoax, and their vaccine is a scam! You don't need actual diplomats with actual diplomatic experience to negotiate foreign policy or trade relations, when all you have to do is be tough! It's easy! Because you will it! Want to break off a 50-year-old economic union? No sweat! Just do it! And if there are consequences to this, it's not your fault! It's a hoax! The French made you do it! And if you lose an election? Can't be! It's got to be a hoax! Somebody stole it from you, because there can't be anything real outside your expectations! You know everything, and nobody else knows anything, and you don't need proof of any of it. You just know.
I could go on and on. It's all exhausting, really. I'm watching a bunch of people gather in Washington today convinced that their enemies have stolen an election from them, even though they have no actual proof of anything. All they have is a bunch of made-up, absurdist conspiracy theory innuendo that adds up to nothing that exists anyplace outside their heads, but none of that matters. Because they believe. The whole country could evaporate in a wisp of unicorn farts because they believe. They'll all tear it down if they have to.
Thing is, Ipernity was just a little web site, and I could walk away when it got too stupid to go on. I can't walk away from this stupid world. The consequences of a bunch of people's magical thinking are biting us hard, again and again and again, and all I can do is ride it out. But it's exhausting sometimes, and the little microcosmic reiterations eat at you. You see this little thing dumb people are doing blown up large like a Mandelbrot in reverse, and sometimes it's just easier to think about a dumb little web site.

With funds from Develop Africa (www.developafrica.org) AID Sierra Leone organised a training in basic computer software programmes (MS Windows, MS Word and MS Excel) for selected civil society organizations at the Sulisha Institute of Management and Computer Studies in Freetown.
This is one of the things I got while I was trying to figure out how to render Mandelbrot set. So this is basically just a programming mistake. Looks quite interesting though. Rendered with VBA in MS Excel.
I felt that after crunching numbers and fiddling with MS Excel for eight straight hours (minus the thirty-minute lunch break we took to recharge,) I might lose my sight if I had to look at one more figure or spreadsheet cell. No wonder they call it Happy Hour.
