Self Portrait - 'The making of a Table'. Not the MS Excel kind but the kind made from reclaimed wood. Sorry I moved so fast, in a hurry to finish. At least I still have my feet on the ground

This tree is growing at Harriets Walk Rainforest Arboretum at Dural, Sydney, NSW.

In December 2015 I was asked to assist with designing a rainforest arboretum, species selection and placement on a 2 acre site at Dural, in Sydney's North West suburbs.

Dural seemed an unlikely location for such an arboretum on first thoughts, however, having attended a number of Galston Open Garden weekends where evidence of Australian rainforest plants being grown successfully in the area could be seen the owners quickly became enthusiastic about the idea of a rainforest arboretum.

Having established a good selection of Australian rainforest species were already being grown successfully in the area we came to the conclusion that there were very few tropical and subtropical Australian rainforest species that could not be grown in Dural given adequate water and protection from very occasional severe heat, frost and drought.

A very large dam had recently been dug and the material excavated had been generously dispersed right across the entire site. As a result the planting medium across much of the site was clay and while this initially was considered problematic it was largely overcome in all but a few instances by digging reasonable planting holes and filling them with composted duck waste mulch.

After levelling the site copious amounts of woodchip mulch was spread across the entire site and labelled species marker pegs were laid out with a focus on impressive rainforest flowering trees along the northern perimeter.

The specified plants were ordered in December 2015, with most shipped by courier from Burringbar Rainforest Nursery in Northern NSW.

While we waited their arrival on site an efficient irrigation system with water supplied from the nearby dam was installed with drippers on each planting hole. We commenced planting in early January 2015 with most plants in the ground over 2 x two day periods.

While the owners initial plans had been for a more manicured European style garden they have no regrets and are very pleased with their amazing rainforest.

While rainforest plants dominate the south western side of the property the owners have also managed to develop impressive exotic gardens by use of Camelia, Azalea and other cooler climate species which the area's gardens are famous for.

As of 9th January 2021 Harriets Walk Rainforest has 140 Australian rainforest species and 362 rainforest trees doing well with more species planned for addition as the canopy establishes. Many rare and endangered species are planted in the arboretum with some never before successfully grown in Sydney.

Orchids, ferns and smaller understory trees will progressively be added to the owners meticulous MS excel spreadsheet database.

If exotic species are included in the tally the owners report that the tally of species rises to, currently, 220.

Dural and Galston are famous for very large homes on beautifully and often meticulously landscaped medium sized acreage properties.

The area is also fortunate that many properties have retained their native forest, dominated by Sydney Turpentine & Ironbark trees making the area among Sydney's leafiest and most sought after areas to live.

Seascape drawn with MS Excel

This afternoon I walked down to a Temp agency in the Financial District.

I figured it couldn't hurt to sign up and see if I could find bring in some extra income with temporary work while I wait for the verdict from my previous job interview.

After a round of extensive tests to determine my typing speed, MS Excel, MS word, Powerpoint and Photoshop skills.. and filling out numerous forms..

I was asked "How soon can you start working?"

"um.. tomorrow?"

"Okay great". My new recruiter handed me a FED EX package. "This is for a one week assignment in a law firm. You'll be doing mostly administrative duties and data entry.. but your first task will be to proctor for the law exam. The exams are in this envelope. Bring them with you tomorrow morning to the following address. The dress code is Business professional. Do you have a business suits?"

"Yes.." (sort of...)

"Okay, good luck. Here's your work ID to register your hours worked on our website at the end of each day."

"Thanks"

and that was it. I walked out with my mysterious Fed Ex package and returned home.

So it' looks like I'll be slipping back into my high heels and returning to the daily grind in...a law firm? The only knowledge of Law firms comes from reading the random John Grisham novels purchased at Airport Kiosks.

That will be a first...Even though it's only a one week assignment, the pay is great.

I'm kind of excited, nervous and wondering what tomorrow has in store for me. I really have no clue...

Well, Now I have to head downtown to get a sharp-looking Business suit.

I'll let you know how it goes...
