"The art of the great draftsman, illustrator and author of the novel The Other Side, Alfred Kubin, appears more current today than ever before: for it was violence, wartime destruction, pandemics, natural disasters, the manipulation of the masses and other abysses of human existence that pervaded his highly narrational works. The oeuvre of this fantastical creator confronts us with pessimistic visions which – to quote Schopenhauer – delineate “the worst of all possible worlds”."

Orawka

Orava is a region located on the north of the country, the northest point of Slovakia is village called Oravská Polhora. Area of Orava is 1661 km² and it is divided into two parts: Dolná Orava (with Dolný Kubín as a centre) and Horná Orava (the centers are Námestovo and Tvrdošín).

Orava is surrounded by a border from the north and the east, by the mountain Západné Tatry (West Tatras) from the south-west, and by the mountain Chočské vrchy from the south. It is one of the most favorite tourist areas in Slovakia. The most interesting sights are: Oravský hrad (Orava Castle) and Oravská priehrada (Orava reservoir)

The next day, having seen this train while en route, I improvised this vantage point next to the Tesco in Dolný Kubín (said supermarket is visible behind the train). Despite the rather unplanned character of this photo, it's quite nice I think - just that the shot’s not quite wide enough for the entire train. * I believe there are no rules in prayer and in having a relationship with God. God sees through our vices and the material and exterior aspects of our Selves. He sees or knows our heart, who we really are. When one can relax and be yourself in faith that you are loved in accepted for who you are in God's presence, then you are on the way to a meaningful relationship with the Lord.

Lyonel Feininger and Alfred Kubin. A Friendship of Artists

„My dear brother Kubin“ - the friendship between Alfred Kubin and Lyonel Feininger is on show in the Albertina, with more than 100 pictures by both artists.

In a letter of 1912, Alfred Kubin addresses Lyonel Feininger with the words „Of today’s artists, I appreciate you especially” and the offer to exchange pictures. These works will be on display in the exhibition Albertina as well. Already in 1910, Feininger was inspired to his series “In the city at the end of the world” by Kubin’s fantasy novel “The Other Side”.

For the first time, the correspondence between the two artists will be printed in its entirety. 37 letters, some with photographs and drawings, are shown in the catalogue, the last letter being from 1919. Presumably, the two artists have only met twice in person. Only one of the two encounters is documented, Kubin’s visit to Feininger in Berlin in the year 1913.

The Albertina confronts the work of the two friends with approximately 100 paintings and drawings, in thematic sections (“The City at the End of the World”, Carneval, Riot, War”, Trains and Ships”..). The exhibition shows what they had in common, but also the differences in their respective work. They both had a penchant for drawing, for small formats, and also for caricature, distortion and nightmarish scenarios.

In our film Albertina director Klaus Albrecht Schröder is talking about the different characters of the two artists as well as of the similarities one can see as well in their work. The exhibition is on show till January 10th, 2016. (written by Cem Angeli)
