GWR 4-6-0 4930 Hagley Hall heads towards Bridgnorth near Eardington summit in May 1982
Interesting the number of heads looking out of the windows too!
4930 was purchased by the SVR Holdings Company in June 1972 and was moved “dead” by rail to Bewdley on 6th January 1973.
Renovation commenced at Bewdley and continued in earnest at Bridgnorth in 1978. At the completion of this full restoration, and following a few test runs and minor rectification work in August 1979, its return to mainline passenger working took place on 22nd September 1979, when it double headed faultlessly with “Black Five” LMS 5000 From Hereford to Chester and return with the SVRA “The Inter-City” charter.
Withdrawal from SVR traffic came in October 1986, after suffering failure of several boiler stays and with it's boiler certificate close to expiry.
On the 6th October 2013 Hagley's lengthy overhaul began. The current objective is that 4930 “Hagley Hall” will rejoin the Severn Valley Railway fleet during the 2020 Season, after a gap of nearly 34 years.

The Swindon-built Churchward 2-8-0 heavy freight engine is hauling the first train of the day - the 10.25 a.m. service with Gresley carriages to Kidderminster on Tuesday September 16th 2014. The morning mist had just cleared and the temperature was still low enough to give a good display of steam as the loco climbed the gradient and approached the tunnel at Knowlesands about 200 yards further along the line. Out of shot to the right are chalet style homes, and the railway banking here has been planted with flowers and shrubs. At this time of the year, the industrial estate to the left is largely hidden by foliage.
