In 1910 gold was discovered at Beaver Lake and hundreds of people rushed to stake claims. By 1913 the peak of the gold rush was on with more than 1000 claims staked in the area.
About one-half mile north of this monument and across the river, Beaver City had its beginning in 1914.
Mining operations were carried out and Beaver Lake became well known for its fishing industry.
A freighting outfit began business and barns and boarding houses were built to look after the many travelers. With the gold rush, the mining industry and the fishing industry, it seemed that Beaver City was to become a boom town and grow.
However, when WWI broke out many left for home or moved to Sturgeon Landing where the Mandy Mine hauled its ore. Beaver city began to deteriorate and by 1918 it was practically a ghost town!
