(back to) L.A.

After coming back from Japan and still suffering from jetlag, I had a perfect excuse to wake up early and see the wonderful sunrise. And sure it lived up to its expectations

Thanks to jetlag, i was able to catch the glow of the sun early in the morning. There were so many birds flying around.

Can't think straight these days in the evening... waiting for the jet lag to wear off.

Nothing to see here, move along.

6MEN241 - that was the registration plate for the Chevrolet Malibu awaiting us in the car rental lot in San Francisco airport.

Great. Not that we drove it very far that week. Jetlag will do that to you. You know, not wanting to do much of anything.

It did take us down to Monterey though, to the awesome aquarium, and to the Embarcadero, to catch the ferry to (the very awesome) Alcatraz. In between, some cruising around along the PCH, Golden Gate Bridge, Google campus and the Lego store. Even past the headquarters of fledgling company Tesla.

Impressions of the car - I was ready to be disappointed. GM had grown a reputation for producing sub-par machines, but the Malibu was pretty good. Plenty of space (hey child-safety car seats) and luggage. material quality felt pretty good, and the car was reasonably quiet. It was the absence of get up and go which marked the car most. I guess I had been expecting 6-cylinder power, which seemed to be missing somewhere. The car felt like it had too little torque (217 Nm), too much weight (1,549 kg) and not enough gears (4AT). It turned out the car was only a 2.4L 4-cylinder, and there were higher output engine available, but not fitted to our rental.

The Malibu rode on the LWB Epsilon platform, shared with the Saturn Aura, Opel Signum and Pontiac G6. Though GM was about to enter bankruptcy (partly as a consequence of poorly executed product), it was clear that the Malibu was an example the GM could build good cars that were affordable. Sadly, the market had already voted and was shopping Japanese and Korean.

One of the distinct advantages of jet lag is waking up at 4:30am in time to catch the sunrise reflecting off the Tokyo cityscape.

These pictures were taken as preparation for Emily's Grand Tour of Europe as part of her graduation present in 2019. The trip will go to Greece, Italy, Switzerland, France, and Spain over a little more than a month. The whole trip is on YouTube, we'd appreciate if you checked the series out there (and liked, subscribed, commented, etc.)

i so glad she is back in Japan again i would walk all night with her she only person allowed to wear my hoody ww

Ms. Sandra P tagged me for this meme, s'posed to be 10 things you may or may not know about me:

(1) Phobias: large insects that buzz or move unpredictably; telephones.

(2) My long-suffering husband has to physically wake me up to get me out of bed most mornings.

(3) I am appalled to admit that I enjoy cinnamon raisin bagels. I should be deported from New York City.

(4) For a short time, I was a child model. Somehow my mom talked us into these little runway fashion shows at the now-defunct department store Bonwit Teller in Chicago. Look, evidence! As you can see, walking was (and is) very difficult for me so it was not meant to be. My paycheck was keeping the clothes - the sweet threads in that photo were a cherished outfit.

(5) I was once in a tiny black-box theater production of an homage to The Bad Lieutenant called Flipwagon.

(6) I am from Indiana. People I know in real life know this, even if it is difficult for them to accept in light of East Coast stereotypes about Midwesterners. And East Coasters have a hard time getting their heads around the fact that there are Jewish people in Indiana, but it's true. Just ask the Indiana Jewish Historical Society!

(7) On a related note, my family is Jewish but my parents didn't push hard on religion. I had a bat mitzvah, but only after a 1-year crash course of private tutoring by a kindly, ancient rabbi with a flair for off-color jokes. Now, if I had to call myself something it would be a Secular Humanist. I don't have time to worry about whether God exists.

(8) Sometimes I try to predict the future like this: If the next car that goes by is blue, X will happen. If not, Y will happen. It doesn't usually work. Does that make me crazy?

(9) I am sensitive to caffeine. It used to give me nosebleeds. Recently I ate too many Pocket Coffees and had to leave work early.

(10) I have had and used the same pair of house slippers (bunnies!) since 1990.

Jetlag effect sinking in.

He was suffering from some jetlag and didn't have his best day when the young photographer came sneeking up (sorry Greg).

For those who don't know Greg I can tell that he is one of the worlds greatest portrait photographers. He is famous for taking great pictures of a lot of Hollywood Celebrities. His workshops are really great and he is also a great colorful person that shows a lot of interest in other peoples. He is a true inspiration to me and his books are very nice.

Jetlag helps to get good pictures. I woke up at 4 in an ice-cold morning in January and decided to walk down from 3rd to 30th street instead of trying to sleep. I had a lot of great impressions of Philly and have seen many tough early risers on their way to work.

It is daytime inside St Michael's church, Llanfihangel. There were three or four bats flying up and down the church, occasionally going into a dark attic at one end of the church, but regularly coming out again. Remarkable.

Taken during a jetlag induced early start to Saturday morning on the 26th April 2014, an early stop off an hour before sunrise on the hills of Sausolito overlooking the Golden Gate Bridge and San Francisco, with the changing colours in the sky as the transition from night to day rolled along, with the sun finally breaching the hills in the distance and flooding the bay area with colour.
