Jetlag still has me up at 5 am, well before the current sunrise at 8 am. It was a perfect winter morning so I took advantage with a walk around town. A few more to come :) .

I think that The Gentleman Amateur flew to Florida and took this while I was sleeping, as this looks way more like London than Tampa Florida.

Returning to Amsterdam under a chilly but absolutely Blue almost Azure Sky, I made for the Hortus Botanicus to battle the onslaught of jetlag...
Though air temperature wasn't much above 8 C., the Sun was pleasantly warm and there was little wind. It was the kind of weather to draw out bees hungry for protein.
Here on beautifully blue Alpine Squill, Scilla bifolia, is our European Honey Bee, Apis mellifera. She's gathering pollen, and you can see some bluely collected already in her corbicula. It's a bit early in the year for drones to be ready for 'marriage'. In Classical Times, a concoction of Alpine Squill was sometimes used to delay puberty in boys especially for the slave trade. Whether our bees do the same for drones by using this pollen... I don't know.
Ok, some of you might have had a little jetlag, so here is one more from Kauai.
This little reef just off of the beach where we were staying in Poipu constantly had this little break going on. A little off shore breeze only added to the dynamics.
I don't know if it's just a sign of my simple mind, but I can sit for hours and watch the waves, and I guess it doesn't hurt if there is an awesome beach to sit on... especially if it's located in a little paradise known as Kauai :)
I usually put together a group trip for whoever wants to go every summer. (54 last time) I had to pass on all excursion this past year, but I am working on having my bases covered on the home front so I can plan another one next summer... request are pouring in for another visit to the Mayan ruins in the Yucatan Peninsula... Playa Del Carmen may be in the making... any takers?? :-)
Can you guess my favorite part of this wave??
Jetlag played a trick on my mind, and I dreamt of the great Volcano Story (1864) by Jules Verne (1828-1905) and the dangerous animals encountered by shy Axel Lidenbrock and his intrepid uncle Otto during their journey to the centre of the earth down from the extinct glacier-volcano on Iceland, Snæfellsjökull. I, though, was all but trapped in a drably modern hotel in an industrial park near Auckland Airport.
But the early morning light brought to my attention in the distance a hill. Of course it was Puketutu, extinct volcano on an island of the same name in Manukau Harbour, connected to the mainland by a causeway. So obviously I forewent a stop-over foray into Auckland City and set out instead for a nice hike after lots of asphalt.
The inset shows a view of the island at the end of that causeway. The vegetation is marvellously New Zealandic; through the plants on the right you can just see the gentle rise of Puketutu. But try as I might I couldn't get to the top. The island is either a working stone quarry - quite dangerous in parts - or a very private housing estate strictly forbidden to the public. I did climb some gates and fences, smooth as well as barbwired, and clambered too over rocks where the perimeter tracks end. But then gave up, and couldn't journey downward. Hadn't the stamina of the Lidenbrocks, it would seem.
Instead, I adventured a bit in the multitudinous patches of Wild Fennel.
No, it's not a plant endemic to New Zealand but was introduced here by settlers or perhaps earlier by sailors. It thrives happily on this volcanic rock. Here's where I saw another non-native of New Zealand, this handsome Asian Paper Wasp - at least, if I'm not mistaken. Internet is not very good here, so I can't be completely certain. But In Jules Verne's times they went without that device, so why should I withhold from you, my Readers, what might be speculation?
A week after I've landed safely in Finland, still struggling with jetlag, I finally forced myself out the door. We went, my husband and I, to Kiasma--the Museum of Contemporary Art in Helsinki.
We saw the new exhibition by Korakrit Arunanondchai (see link below) and took another tour at the rest of the museum.
That is where I noticed this couple in perfect colours and outfit harmony. They were watching a video so I waited for a suitable moment to approach and introduce myself.
They were positively agreeable to participate in my photo project, but they needed some time to reflect about my questions, they said.
Peppi gave me her email address and they both promised to get back to me with the answers.
That much I've however found out; Daniel is from Helsinki and is studying art in the university. He hasn't yet quite decided what his main subject would be, although he believes it'd be litterature.
I am looking forward to hear from them soon.

Feeling a bit of a Hybrid myself after a long time away from Groningen, I wandered over to the secluded Prinsentuin to get rid of jetlag. The weather though chilly was half-way decent, and some sunlight prettily splashed the early-autumnal roses.
This is 'Peaudouce', a Tea Rose hybrid bred by Colin and Patrick Dickson in 1983/1984. The Scottish Dicksons hailed from Perth. Alexander Dickson (1801-1880) founded a plant nursery at Newtownards, Northern Ireland in 1836. The company began to breed roses at the end of the 1870s partly to upstage the virtual monopoly of the French in that endeavor. Ironically, this fine rose carries a French name although the exhibition name was 'Elina'. It's not just a rose, but it was in 2006 inducted into the Rose Hall of Fame by the World Federation of Rose Societies, one of only 14 Roses honored this way.
And this afternoon I was honored to see it in all its splendor.
Been back from Brazil for three days... bad jet lag and also trying to go through the nearly 5000(!) photos I took. So haven't had a chance to catch up on people's streams since the airport last Sunday but looking forward to taking the time to do so soon.
Just wanted to say thanks to everyone for all your encouragement... and also a huge, huge thanks to the wonderful LJ who surprised me with the gift of a pro account shortly after I posted the photo with a question on whether it was worth it. What a lovely, generous, unexpected gesture... thanks, Lee!!

The second half of September was dominated by my 20th trip to China. This trip was planned to visit my in-laws, but my wife, mother-in-law and I also travelled to Yunnan to photograph the remains of the metre gauge railway network.
On 19 September 2025, one day after arriving from Belgium, we found ourselves in Kaiyuan, the beating heart of this network. Jet lag meant that my wife and I were wide awake early in the morning. We decided to go to the station to find out if there would be any trains to Shanyao that morning. This turned out to be the case, but the first train would not leave for another hour. Before dawn broke and we set off on the line, we took the time to photograph the tourist train from Kaiyuan to Data, which was staying overnight at the platform. In 2015, I could photograph these same carriages in daily service around Kunming, but they have since been painted in the classic green and now transport Chinese tourists over a short section of the metre-gauge railway. The regular locomotive for these trains is DF21 0012, which has also been painted green.
There are worse ways to start a journey ;-)
