1976 Jeep Cherokee Chief - My first Jeep. Although it is not my mine, it looks exactly like the one I owned. I took this picture in 1976 at an EC4WDA Region B race near Kempton, PA . Basic stats of my Chief...Pewter Grey, Black Vinyl Interior, AMC 258 6cyl , 3spd manual on the floor, Dana 44's with the 3.54 axle ratio, Goodyear Tracker AT Tires On Factory White Wagon Wheels. Great vehicle, but the 6cyl just didn't cut it on the hills of PA.
The two rear wheels of this vehicle are powered by a drive shaft and rear differential with a 70/30 power split for hard surfaces. . There is a rear differential lockout for low traction conditions. It has four forward gears and reverse with Hi and Lo range which gives it a total eight forward, and two reverse speeds. Approximately 18,000 of these were produced for the Deutsches Heer during the Second World War. This was the German equivalent of the US Army Jeep.
