Goes is in de 10e eeuw ontstaan aan de oever van een kreek.
Die kreek heette Curtagosum, Korte Gors.
Hieraan ontleent Goes haar naam.
In de 13e eeuw groeit Goes uit tot een havenstadje en krijgt de stad steeds meer rechten.
In het jaar 1405 krijgt Goes van Graaf Willem VI de toestemming om recht te spreken bij zware misdaden.
Hiermee is het proces van dorp tot stad voltooid.
Graaf Willem VI, graaf van Holland en Zeeland, hertog van Beieren, graaf van Henegouwen.
5 april 1365 geboren te Den Haag, 31 mei 1417 overleden te Bouchain.
Uit zijn huwelijk met Margaretha van Bourgondie verkreeg hij een "wettige" dochter.
Zijn dochter Jacoba (1401-1436) gravin van Beieren, verleent de stad in 1417 het recht om muren en poorten te bouwen.
Hiermee krijgt Goes ook het uiterlijk van een stad.
Het was de tijd van de "Hoekse en Kabeljauwse twisten" oorlogen van 1350-1490 over de erfenis van graaf Willem IV van Holland. Gevechtshandelingen voornamelijk in Holland, Utrecht, Zeeland en West-Friesland.
De voornaamste middelen van bestaan in de 15e eeuw zijn de zeevaart, het bewerken van de meekrapplant tot een rode verfstof, de lakenfabrikcage en vooral de zout productie.
