This party slide with a Pixar Cars theme was one of a handful of party inflatables that was set up in downtown Auburn, Indiana for the 2015 ACD Festival during the week preceding Labor Day. I took my photo on September 5.

Shortly after the 1968 establishment of Lehman College, and its adoption of Hunter College's Bronx campus, Todd & Pokorny were hired to complete a few new buildings (and convert the old union into the music building). Their real goal, however, seems to have been to plug long-standing holes in the campus, whose originally planned slate of buildings had been slashed by the Depression and never taken back up. A new multi-level "rain or shine" circulation scheme - Brutalist alien space, fusing in interesting ways with the collegiate landscape - compensates for the thinness of the buildings, while the two new buildings, in particular the concert hall (seen here) are arranged along the long eastern edge of the campus to screen out an unpleasant neighbor built immediately after the original campus - the Concourse Rail Yard.
There are Postmodern touches; material choices and the concert hall’s stair towers supposedly reference the Neo-Gothic turrets of the old campus, and the whole project is the creation of a figural quadrangle out of edgeless void space. The elevations are generally late-modern or Brutalist, right down to the blank campus face of the concert hall (surely the lobby could open up a bit more!) and the ribbon windows of the Speech & Theater building. However, we should allow that construction was badly delayed by the 1970s fiscal crisis, which also had a tendency to eat up architectural expenses (via inflation). On the whole I think this is a good lemonade-from-lemons situation that successfully makes a campus out of what had previously been four buildings sitting at some distance from each other.
My dear friend Staci and I recently joked about becoming stewardesses ("flight attendants" for those of you who demand political correctness - yawn). Actually, we just want to travel and slide down the inflatable slide. I told her I'll go down head first because I'm a thrill seeker . . . although sliding down head first in that pointy bra could be dangerous.
