Still trying to chase the perfect combination of heather and sunlight - the heather is coming into full colour but the light is as fickle as ever.

One of my first proper shots with my new D7100 and Nikkor 10-24mm! Very happy with it so far, but I definitely need some practice to get used to all the new buttons!
This shot was taken the other evening on Hathersage moor. A view from Carl wark (some sort of ancient fort I gather!) over to Higger Tor, a part of the Peak District that remains in the Sheffield city boundaries!
Another one from Thursday morning, this was taken on the walk back from Carl Wark heading back towards Higger Tor when the sun burst back out giving some gloriously intense warm light.
I love the way the sun has caught the grass in the bottom right of the frame adding some nice contrast to the darker heather while the path helps draw your eye through the image and up onto the rocks and rich blue sky.(1/80 f5.6 @ 16mm 0.6 hard ND grad filter)
Taken from the western end of Higger Tor looking just west of north towards Stanage Edge. Unfortunately cloud drifted in and out of shot as I took the photos giving this colourful effect.
124 30 second exposures stacked using Startrails software.
A less processed version which has retained more detail in the trails.
Higger Tor, from Longshaw, the Peak District, Derbyshire, looking into Sheffield, South Yorkshire, England.
Fill up your vehicle with fuel, turn off your Sat Nav and 'get lost' in t'Dales... views such as this are in abundance.

Pre-dawn on Higger Tor, Peak District, Derbyshire, UK.
Shot with a Nikon D90 and Tokina 20-35mm, f2.8 lens.
A sunrise shot on a cold misty morning on Higger Tor, Derbyshire, UK.
To the right you can make out Carl Wark, a fortified hill that dates back to the iron age. It was further modified during the Roman occupation.
Taken with a Nikon D300 and 18-105mm lens.
A fantastic morning on Higger Tor when it all just comes together. Albeit briefly.
At first, with the hill cloaked in low cloud, it didn't look too promising. However, the sun managed to sneak below the cloud line briefly as it cleared the horizon, then light up the mist with quite breath taking effect.
One of those morning that serves as a reminder why I love landscape photography and the places I visit so much!
Looking from Burbage Edge across the Burbage Valley shortly after dawn. The Sun's light highlighting the gritstone outcrops of Carl Wark, Over Owler Tor and Higger Tor.

A bit of a weird one for me today... a monochrome 5x4 crop!
Having spent the day clearing out my desk and having a meal with my supervisor, I ended up having time to pop over to Higger Tor for sunset. The forecast looked hit and miss, but worth a go. As I left Sheffield though, the sun turned to rain, which turned to hail, which turned to snow... and the roads became quite a bugger to drive on! Still, I made it (slowly) and hung around for a couple of hours as a series of hail storms/blizzards blew through (shelter rock being very handy, yet again!).
Eventually I got bored of waiting for any direct light or sunset so popped down to Carl Wark to have a go at this famous view. Shooting with a 10 stop filter on in such wind is always problematic, and the composition was somewhat limited by the spots of rain blowing in. Ideally I prefer this view from a yard to the right, shooting something like 20 degrees to the left... it balances the rocks with Higger Tor better... but with the wind/rain as it was I settled for this composition and a crop of the wasted space out to the right.
The sky and ground are two separate images (as otherwise it'd all be blurred from the wind!) and I couldn't help but convert to b/w as the snowy sections of foreground and contrast in the sky just seem to

Higger Tor, Peak District, UK.
Stormy conditions on Higger Tor. Looking to Hathersage and Hope Valley.
I've tried for three consecutive years to get a shot of Carl Wark and Higger Tor from this viewpoint during the August heather season. This year's is my pick of the crop, but I had to be patient while the cloud formation slowly drifted into position.
Can you spot the person Paragliding? I've left them in for a sense of scale in this amazing landscape.
